About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Traffic Lights Cooperated Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 26, 2018

The most notable thing about today’s bike ride was getting started at 9:55 am which is about an hour or more earlier than usual. Stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia ended around 9 am which meant I didn’t need to hang around before bicycling.

Choosing the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route I biked 35.32 miles putting May at 803.06 miles and the week at 176.39 miles. This route offers long sections without interruptions which helps with average speed and time to cover the miles. Traffic lights cooperated as well, I think I did not need to stop any. Very unusual.

Weather during the bike ride: start 83 (74% humidity, mostly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph. Finish 90 (60% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 4 mph. Shorts and short sleeve jersey were just right. I did sweat thanks to the humidity level.

Rest stop at the Valero station on Northpark Drive at 28.1 miles into the bike ride. I ate a couple of granola bars and ice water. Sitting in the shade felt good but the light breeze seemed to stop while I was sitting. One man commented on how good the Canyon bike looked and asked about my ride.

Finished the bike ride at 12:36 pm which is earlier than normal thanks to the early start.

Weather forecast is a repeat of today for Sunday. Not sure if I ride though.

Bike The Woodlands Coalition: safety always comes first while riding

By Patricia Dillon | www.yourconroenews.com

As Bike Month comes to a close, members of the Bike The Woodlands Coalition want to remind residents that it is important to remember to be safe when riding around town throughout the year.

Randall Cade, president of Bike The Woodlands Coalition, said there are a number of safety issues in The Woodlands for cyclists — both on township roads and the various pathways through the community.

“There’s more or less two large groups of riders. There’s pathway riders and road riders. So we can talk about safety issues for each of those. The safety issues on the …

Southside Group Ride – San Antonio

therivardreport.com

If you’re more in the mood for a bike ride, consider this moderately paced weekly group ride that weaves its way through San Antonio’s South Side.

The group meets at 8:30 a.m. every Sunday, weather permitting, at Bike World’s shop at 835 SE Military Dr., with the ride beginning at 9 a.m. The route varies, but is usually between 13 and 16 miles, store manager Adrian De La Rosa said.

One of the most popular loops goes from Military Drive to Mission Road, then north into Southtown, he said. From there, the group will often continue north on South Alamo, get onto Broadway, make a loop around downtown and …

Watch For Me On Google Streetview? Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 25, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 25, 2018

Around mile 28 in today’s bike ride a Google street mapping car passed me on FM 2100 as we traveled north. I did not realize how far above the roof of the car the camera pod was. Maybe in the coming months I will appear on street view. Not much later while I was stopped for the traffic light on FM 1960 waiting to go west the Amtrak train passed through Huffman upsetting the traffic light sequence. The train horn on the Amtrak engine sounds different from the freight train horn. I thought the Amtrak had already went through since it was about 1:25 pm.

All of this took place as I biked the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route. The ride started at 11:08 am after I watched stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia with Chris Froome winning the stage and upsetting the GC standings.

The weather during my bike ride: start 85 (69% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 5 mph. Finish 88 (61% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Shorts and a short sleeve jersey were the wardrobe selection along with sunscreen. While the light wind was appreciated at times I wished it was a little more active to help with cooling.

I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a rest break at the 30.8 mile mark. Sitting in the shade with the light breeze blowing sometimes I ate a couple of granola bars, rested my legs and drank extra cold water to prepare for the 11+ miles to the finish. I stayed there about 25 minutes before getting back on the bike. Riding west on FM 1960 I did get a little assist from the wind which was helpful for my tired legs. Not sure why the legs felt tired today after a rest day yesterday.

Concerned that my timing would put me at Kingwood Drive as the high school traffic started turned out to be a non-event. I got there at 2:30 pm about 15 minutes before dismissal and the traffic was light. From there the back streets brought me to the finish at 2:40 pm.

After today’s bike ride I am at 141.87 miles for the week, 768.55 miles for the month, and 2823.9 miles for the year. It is still possible to get 200+ miles this week and 800+ miles for May at the same time with several days remaining for the month.
