About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rusty Bridges, Turtles Galore and Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 3, 2018

The legs were tired today. The tailwind helped compensate while biking north on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route but the headwind showed how tired they were. The best I could get my average speed up to was 14.5 mph but that was short lived once I rode into the stiff south wind.

Airport Weather Start
Airport Weather Finish

With the warm weather today’s attire was shorts and short sleeve University of Cincinnati jersey. The red and black goes great with the Canyon Endurace CF SLX color.

While I was brushing my teeth before getting ready to leave I thought about a different set of streets for my exit from Kingwood. I biked these before but not on this route. Wheels down at 11:09 am I set off to Elm Grove Village then to W. Lake Houston Parkway going north to Royal Brook Village. While I was on W. Lake Houston Parkway before getting Royal Brook I stopped and took these photos.

The bridge is old and rusty with noisy boards riding over it. As I was getting ready to leave after taking the bridge photo I looked down in the water and saw more turtles than I can remember seeing in one place. Click on the photos to see better. Most of them were more than 15″ from head to tail with a couple even larger.

With the turtles behind me I continued north on the trail along W. Lake Houston Parkway crossing Mills Branch Drive to enter Royal Brook Village. I took these photos at the bridge over a gully the trail crosses.

5-3-2018 Bike Ride Royal Brook-1

From there I rode north into Country Colony an older subdivision that has new construction again. I turned left and rode west to Ford Road. Waiting on traffic I turned left again headed to North Kingwood Estates and the streets to take back through Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, and Woodridge Forest to get to I-69/US59 where the route resumed the usual direction.

Making my way through Tavola I saw the extra starting streets would probably add a couple of miles to the route by the time I finished. This would help me move closer to my mileage goal for May. On Roman Forest Blvd. I rode to the west with the wind helping. I dreaded the next left turn onto the I-69/US59 south bound service road because the tailwind would switch to a headwind. It did that but coming from my left side rather than a headwind the pedaling wasn’t quite as tough as I expected. But I still slowed from my pace getting to Tavola. I got a short reprieve from the wind biking west on Valley Ranch Parkway behind the stores but when that turned back to the south the wind caught me again. Add a couple of inclines and the legs power went down as I watched the watts go up but the speed go down.

Briar Tree and Oakhurst were not much different except where streets switched directions briefly and the wind helped or hurt. Exiting Oakhurst I rumbled across the paver bricks in the road over a drainage ditch bridge the developers thought would look nice. They are not quite as bad as the pavers in the French road race but the wheels on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX jumped around producing a rough ride. And for added measure there is another shorter section about 200 feet south of the bridge. They look great and don’t cause cars a problem but bicycles is another issue. Sometimes I ride on the sidewalk/trail to the left of the road to avoid these bricks.

My teeth, feet, and and hands calmed down after the bricks and I biked on through Kingwood Place, back to I-69/US59 and onto Kings Manor before entering Kingwood for the last 4 miles to the finish. It went well with the wind getting blocked some with houses and trees. I rolled to the finish at 1:53 pm.

More good biking weather on Friday.

Racing a Rat

Bill Chance | billchance.org

“Likewise—now don’t laugh—cars and trucks should view the bike lanes as if they are sacrosanct. A driver would never think of riding up on a sidewalk. Most drivers, anyway. Hell, there are strollers and little old ladies up there! It would be unthinkable, except in action movies. A driver would get a serious fine or maybe even get locked up. Everyone around would wonder who that asshole was. Well, bike lanes should be treated the same way. You wouldn’t park your car or pull over for a stop on the sidewalk, would you? Well then, don’t park in …

I’d like to thank the people of Denton — 93 percent of whom have been kind, cordial and helpful to me as I bicycle my way through the city. I’ve really had such positive experiences, I actually sold my vehicle last year and use my bicycle as transportation exclusively. I had owned a vehicle for 37 years previously.

Years ago I paid for a two-day class to improve my cycling skills, and it really helped a lot. I use hand signals, communicate with vehicles to make intentions known, and I wave to …

MS 150 2018

by txags92 | www.bikeforums.net

Well, day one started pretty terrible. We started at our team’s start on Dairy Ashford south of I-10 at 6:10am and rode up to the actual start at the Omni on Park Row. Never again. We ended up on the back of the start there and didn’t actually get to start until well after 7am. Not worth getting up at 4am for. We will either go back to starting at our house and just accept the risk of riding down Clay Road to Barker Cypress, or will start with the team again and turn left on the feeder road and bypass the start line at the Omni next year.

My wife got two flats before the first breakpoint…and it was my fault. She got a flat the previous weekend, and while changing the tube, I noticed the rim tape was in bad shape around some of the spoke holes. So I replaced it Wednesday night…with …

Rio Grande City To La Joya TX: Discovering A Really Great Journal

Wednesday May 2, 2018, 27 miles (43 km) – Total so far: 548 miles (882 km)
Last night in La Borde Hotel we contacted Richard Cavin, a local warm showers host. Reading the comments from his visitors gave me the idea to look for theses rider’s names on crazyguyonabike to see if they had written journals and to see what I could learn about this area of South Texas and the Rio Grand Valley. The second bicyclist I looked up was Brian Becker. If you want to read a really good journal, this one is amazing, (titled, Wild By Nature). Brian rode over …

572 Watts Battling Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 2, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 2, 2018

Today’s ride post was delayed because our internet was down from around 9 am until a few minutes ago. The bike ride went on even if the internet didn’t. I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route to get a couple of extra miles for the first bike ride of May. The ride totaled 35.43 miles towards my goal of 660 miles for May. Yesterday we went to the medical center in Houston for my wife’s cancer checkup. She is doing good with her new medicines. Side effects are nothing compared to the previous treatment, a research drug.

Starting at 11:11 am I was few minutes earlier than usual but the weather is warming up now. The weather during the bike ride: start 85 (76% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph, gusts 23 mph. Finish 85 (70% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 17 mph. Wind continues to challenge my legs as can be seen in the max watts during the bike ride: 572 watts (Strava wasn’t as generous showing my max to be 555 watts). Not equal to the pros but strong for me. There was a spot along the route where my power was jumping above 500 watts for several seconds biking into some wind gusts. With the warmer weather my wardrobe was shorts and short sleeve jersey.

Airport Weather Start of Bike Ride

No rest stops today. I saw three other cyclists along the route: one in Kingwood, one over Lake Houston and the final one on Atascocita Shores Drive. Later another cyclist caught my eye as I rode behind the stores on W. Lake Houston Parkway north of Kingwood Drive. He was on a mountain bike riding along the drainage bayou on the way to Tree Lane where I saw come onto the street and then bunny hopped the curb to continue along the bayou north of Tree Lane. He had a large backpack which looked full but didn’t seem to slow him down any.

The extended portion of this route goes north of FM 1960 in Huffman to Smith Street which connects to E. Lake Houston Parkway and then back to FM 1960. I figured this adds about 1 1/2 miles to the unextended version of the route.

Riding west on FM 1960 from E. Lake Houston Parkway I went over Lake Houston. To the south the wind was pushing the water in waves toward the causeway while on the north side of the causeway the water was calm.

Making the right turn at the Atascocita Shores Drive traffic light I rode about a 1/4 mile and stopped to take these photos.

5-2-2018 Bike Ride Atascocita Shoires Drive
5-2-2018 Bike Ride Atascocita Shoires Drive-2

Lake Houston is in the background coming into the small inlet with houses and boat houses. The sign in the first picture warns people about unauthorized use of the boat ramp and other facilities. To the right and out of the picture is an open field where some people have camped maybe causing the sign.

After snapping the photos I continued on Atascocita Shores Drive with a nice tailwind and onto Kings River Drive to get back to W. Lake Houston Parkway. On W. Lake Houston Parkway a white pickup truck with Halff on the door has been surveying and inspecting the area around the bridge for a week or more. Today the truck was parked in the right shoulder lane blocking me which forced me to stop and wait for the passing traffic to get by.

With the somewhat earlier start I was well in front of the Kingwood High School traffic and crossed Kingwood Drive without any waiting. From there I rode on and finished at 1:47 pm.

More warm weather on Thursday. I plan on riding.
