How GPS technology can track your stolen bike

Tips to Protect Your Bike from Theft
Bike thievery is rampant in Texas. In 2015, a bicycle theft ring, valuing the total amount of stolen bikes at nearly $60,000 before the thieves were caught. After buying a top-quality bike, you will want to protect your bike from getting stolen so that you can hit some of the best mountain bike trails in Texas. But with Austin Texas being one of the top 10 cities for bike theft in the US, you will need to take necessary precautions to keep your bike secure.
While purchasing a strong lock is a particular precaution that every bike owner should take, it is equally as important to recognize other means of theft deterrence. Furthermore, you should have a strategy in place to track down your bike if it has indeed been stolen. By being proactive about your bike’s security, you can effectively protect your bike from criminals so that you can enjoy all of the trails and lovely bike paths in Texas.
Tracking Your Bike with GPS
One of the most interesting technologies to help prevent bike theft is to track your bike with GPS devices. In using GPS technologies, you have three tracking options to choose from, including: RFID radio tags, invisible GPS devices, and visible GPS devices. The most efficient of these three are invisible GPS devices, which bar criminals from being able to see the device on your bike and therefore providing optimal security.
Most GPS tracking technologies for bikes are easy to install and do not weight a significant amount, so you can still achieve the same speed while cycling. If your bike is indeed stolen, having a GPS tracking system will allow you to immediately locate your bike from your mobile device. In the end, using this type of tracking technology can save you both time and money—especially if you are hoping to protect an expensive bike.
How to Deter Thieves
In addition to purchasing a GPS tracking device, there are other precautions you can take to deter thieves. One tip is to pay more attention to the way that you store your bike when you are not using it. Even if you are only running into a store, you should always lock your bike to an immovable object like a street bench or a bike rack.
Another tip is to try to leave your bike in different places every day. If you do not have the luxury of locking your bike in a garage or shed while you are at home or in work, try to periodically change the location of its storage. This will help deter criminals from noticing that your bike is in a certain place everyday, which gives them an incentive to follow your routine and steal your bike when you are most vulnerable.
By tracking your bike with GPS technology and deterring criminals in every way that you can, you can keep your bike safe so that you can always take it out on the trails or for a joyride without having to worry about is getting stolen.
