About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Overcast Sky, 18 Mph Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 26, 2018

An overcast sky awaited as I rolled out the driveway at 12:01 pm headed to the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route for what I hoped would be a 33 miles bike ride. It turned out to be 34.42 miles which got me a little closer to my 300 mile goal for January. As of now January biking totals 144 miles.

Riding to SH 242 got a boost from the 18 mph SE wind but that meant I would battle it on the way back south. This early in the riding season my legs were complaining as I reached FM 1484 headed south. Fortunately the traffic light was red there and the few minutes waiting helped them to recover some. Then riding the service road south to Valley Ranch Parkway was hard again but Valley Ranch Parkway put the wind more to my back until I came to the Grand parkway underpass. From then on to the finish (2:35 pm) the legs were put to the test as this is the longest ride in 2018 but I have been on the road 5 times.

Temperature was 67 at the start and 71 at the finish. I donned my cool weather wardrobe: shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey and windbreaker jacket. This was a good choice at the beginning but towards the end of the ride the build up of sweat helped the wind chill to make me feel cooler than it should’ve. I plan on biking on Saturday but rain might be in the area and the temperature forecast call for mid 60’s.

Before the ride I adjusted the Elemnt out front mount lowering it a tiny bit to make it flatter; you know to lower the wind resistance. Ha, ha! What this did was move the PowerPod to where the air intake was not positioned properly but I fixed that by moving it up slightly. Later on I adjusted the PowerPod again raising the air intake a tiny bit more. This increased the watts which made sense because I was pedaling hard into the wind. Hopefully this will be correct.

During the ride I could hear the chain squeaking so it is time to wax it. I think riding on wet roads got to the wax which is not as effective in the wet.I will wax the chain before Saturday’s ride.

Arlington’s River Legacy Parks Hike and Bike Trail Extension Soon Under Way

by Susan Schrock | www.arlington-tx.gov

Construction of Arlington’s portion of the hike and bike trail linking Dallas to Fort Worth along the Trinity River will soon be under way.

The $1.3 million, half-mile trail connection, expected to be complete by mid-September, will fill in one of the gaps in what will eventually become a 60-mile-long trail system along the Trinity River between Dallas and Fort Worth. These pathways are designed to create inviting amenities for long-distance runners, cyclists, and others who enjoy the outdoors. The 7-mile long trail through River Legacy Parks, the crown jewel of Arlington’s park system, is …

Somebody’s Had It With the Rental Bikes on the Katy Trail

BY ALEX MACON | www.dmagazine.com

I’d just like to quickly pass along some wise words from a Dallas Police Department bike patrol officer assigned to the Katy Trail. No matter how you feel about dockless bike share—exciting development in transportation and new urbanism, scourge of sidewalks and metaphor for hubris of unregulated tech companies, little of all of the above—you should not …

But before it follows in the footsteps – or perhaps missteps – of dozens of cities worldwide, City staff will investigate best practices and latest technologies to develop a pilot program that could mitigate several drawbacks of …

Almost Too Cool Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 24, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 24, 2018

I should have started today’s bike ride sooner than 1:26 pm. I was watching the Vuelta a San Juan which I thought would finish around 12:30 pm according to cyclingfans.com. Instead the live stream started showing the distance to the finish at 64K so I decided to get ready and go for ride.

With the late start I chose the “Atascocita South – Walden – Kingwood” route for a total of 25.95 miles. With the shorter distance I finished at 3:27 pm. I did see one other cyclist and our paths crossed twice in Kingwood. He wasn’t dressed as I was. It was 64 degrees at the start (clear sky, 5 mph wind) so I bundled up with shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket and full finger gloves. He didn’t have leg warmers. I was glad I wore the gloves because the wind had a stout chill to it when riding into it.

I have now biked 109.6 miles on the road this year. Not as much as I planned but more than I thought with the cold weather we have had. I am a wimp when it comes to the temperature. My cutoff is 60 degrees but I still probably over dress when it is in the 60’s. I am ready for 85 degrees.

The replacement Wahoo speed sensor arrived in the mail today. I will get it setup on the Blue Norcross AL bike.

No biking on Thursday but I hope to be on the road on Friday if it warms up.
