About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bikes, bonds and big plans: 6 things to watch at Dallas City Hall in 2018

www.dallasnews.com

Dallas City Hall spent 2017 staring down the ghosts of years and decades past: Confederate monuments, the police and fire pension mess, the Trinity toll road, four of six back-pay lawsuits and billions in deferred maintenance.
Save for the sudden arrival of Amazon or another twist, 2018 shouldn’t be as dramatic as last year. But consequences are still ahead at Dallas City Hall in the coming year.
Here are six things to watch in the new year. …

  1. Bike regulations
A LimeBike and Spin bike are left in front of Union Station in downtown Dallas. (Ron Baselice/Staff Photographer)
Last year brought thousands of brightly colored, buck-an-hour bikes to the city’s sidewalks. The four bike-share companies have received both credit and criticism.
In 2018, the city will at least tap the brakes on the unregulated market. The bikes are likely here to stay, but the era of the bike share “experiment” or “pilot program,” as city officials have called it, will come to an end. Regulations limiting the number of bikes appear to be coming. Options will be presented to the council in the new year. …

Dusted Off Cycleops Windtrainer Bike Workout

Texbiker.net Posted on January 1, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 2, 2018

With the weather turning cold (for me anyway) I started looking for a way to get time on the bike indoors. My Cycleops windtrainer has been in the closet catching dust for a couple of years so I started searching online to see if I could use it for virtual training with something like Zwift. It looks like I can except my laptop is not compatible with any of the programs I found. I use a Pixelbook which limits my choices. I could install the Rouvy app on it and I might but for today’s workout I used the Elemnt computer and the speed and cadence sensors already on the bike.

Dusting off the Cycleops and getting the bike positioned wasn’t too hard but I needed to reposition the quick release lever on the rear wheel to get the dot within the green zone so the wheel didn’t come out. A picture of the setup in our breakfast area.

The cold weather is in the forecast through Saturday so I will be using this several times until then.

Brownsville builds on hike-and-bike system

By Kaila Contreras | www.brownsvilleherald.com

Brownsville made progress on several projects in 2017 that would bolster the city’s vision for alternative modes of transportation, but residents will not finish the year with a concrete plan for the development of property where tracks for the west rail once cut through town.
Here’s a look at some of the year’s developments: …

Video: Bike lane proposed by concerned residents

By Kristy Gerlett | www.newschannel10.com

Residents of the Oliver-Eakle neighborhood are asking the city of Amarillo for bike lanes on two major streets.

On Tyler St. there is no stop signs or stop lights from 34th Avenue, all the way to 15th, leading into downtown. The only thing slowing down traffic is a small dip in the road, leaving some residents concerned. …

Letter to editor: Shopping online can create problems

EDDIE MADDOX | lubbockonline.com

Shopping online can create problems

I enjoyed the Dec. 9 article on Millennial shopping trends. Deborah Fowler, interim associate chair and professor of hospitality and retail management at Texas Tech, said that local businesses must match prices of mail order companies if they plan to stay in business.

Suppose I operate a bicycle shop. I coach a shopper on what to look for, such as correct size, structural choices and service after the sale. Maybe a brake …

Mobike, no problem? Fifth bike-share company pulls into Dallas, with more on the way

Robert Wilonsky | www.dallasnews.com

To the glut of bike-share companies swamping Dallas’ streets and, mostly, its sidewalks, add another: Mobike. No joke.
Long rumored to have its eye on Dallas, the billion-dollar Beijing-based company announced late Saturday that beginning this frigid weekend — “just in time for New Year’s Eve” — its orange-and-gray bikes are being rolled out downtown. …
