About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

80 Degrees With a Strong Wind December Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 22, 2017 by Rick AnkrumDecember 22, 2017

Two days before Christmas and it is 80 degrees but definitely warm enough for a bike ride. Rolling out at 11:21 AM under an overcast sky the wind was stiff. I found out at the end of the bike ride why it felt that way: 12 mph from the south with 28 mph gusts. Not much of an issue riding north on the “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route but the stretch back to the south at the Community Drive u-turn was tough. I rode my Blue Norcross AL bike some variety which rode nice and smooth with the wider tires but the extra weight became apparent pedaling into the wind. I had a chance to rest some while I rode west from Loop 494 on Community Drive to I-69/US59 with traffic backed up about 1/2 mile from the traffic light. It moved slowly but once I got to the incline up to the traffic light I rode on the shoulder to the light where I waited for it to change. When it changed I rode slowly waiting for an opening to move to the left to make the turn south on the service road. The car behind me was kind enough to let me over and make the turn.

Riding downhill from the Grand Parkway intersection should have been easy but the headwind made me pedal. Traffic was more than usual on the road before I turned into Valley Ranch at the Texaco station, probably due to the holiday. I was surprised to see the New Caney ISD schools were still in session and letting out in Valley Ranch and later in Briar Tree as I rode by. Humble ISD schools closed after last Friday classes.

While biking through Woodridge Forest early in the ride I stopped to take this two photo to show the wind blowing strong.

12-22-2017 Bike Ride Woodridge Forest-1

The cold front is on the way and at the time I finished the ride (1:24 PM) it was around Navasota. From the 80 degree temperature during the bike ride it will drop into the 40’s on Saturday. No more biking until after Christmas I suspect.

Last Day of Fall Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 20, 2017 by Rick AnkrumDecember 20, 2017

After a foggy day yesterday the weather turned great for a bike ride today. I left at 12:03 PM on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and rode 32 miles. It was a clear sky, 74 degrees with a light 7 mph breeze from the SW. I dressed lighter than Monday’s ride wearing shorts, long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey. It was just right as the temperature warmed up to 77 by the time I finished at 2:22 PM. The sun offset the slight coolness in the shade and as I produced body heat I felt comfortable.

No rest stop in Huffman so it was a continuous ride except for stop signs and traffic lights. I don’t know if it the holiday season or not but several cars and pickups waved me through even though it was their turn.

Close to the end of the ride I stopped at Creekwood Middle School in Kingwood and took these photos to show how great it looked outside. From the look who would guess that winter arrives tomorrow around 11 AM.
