About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

One small trail for North Austin, one giant loop for the whole city

by Caleb Pritchard | www.austinmonitor.com

Last year, Mayor Steve Adler declared in his State of the City address that great cities do big things, a message that the Shoal Creek Conservancy apparently took to heart.
On Wednesday evening at a community workshop in Central Austin, the group officially debuted its vision for the Big Loop, a 30-mile circular system of existing and future urban trails.
The concept would allow cyclists to ride on the Shoal Creek Trail from downtown to connect to the Walnut Creek Trail at the Domain. Heading east from there, the route eventually bends southward and would ultimately connect to the Lance Armstrong Bikeway, which pushes west …

British volunteer helps around town

By Christopher James | baytownsun.com

Southern hospitality can be contagious.
Just ask Englishman Daley Parsons who has been helping victims of Harvey in Baytown for the last two weeks.
At the time when Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast, Parsons was actually in Del Norte, Colorado camping with a friend, living off the grid for a few weeks. When he got back to civilization he saw the news. …

… The Englishman was hitchhiking nearly 1,000 miles from Colorado because he lives his life on the road with just a bicycle, tent and cooking supplies. In fact, for the last four years, Parsons has traveled across the globe with his bicycle and small amount of supplies. He’s been to parts of Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia where he finds jobs to support his trip. …

Bike registration to be required at Texas A&M

By Blakeley Galbraith | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) – Starting Nov. 1, bicyclists on the Texas A&M campus will be required to register their bikes with the university – and after the Nov. 1 deadline, the registration costs will increase.
Some students say they are happy a registration will be implemented since they have trouble finding bike parking.
“Every time I ride my bike up here I always have to walk around,” said Josh Kelsey. ” I see a lot of bikes that are broken down and …

Texas and Florida Mountain Bike Trails Devastated by Hurricanes, Need Your Help

by Jeff Barber | www.singletracks.com

With back-to-back Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hitting the US mainland, the amount of destruction on the ground is difficult to comprehend. Millions are still without power in Florida, while residents in Texas are beginning the difficult task of repairing flood damage to homes and businesses. The threat to human health and safety is still very real, making efficient recovery efforts all the more critical.
In the days immediately following Hurricane Harvey, members of the Greater Houston Off Road Bicycle Association (GHORBA) focused on helping their members out. The group …

Revised September Mileage Goal Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 15, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 15, 2017

I am back on a streak of 5 days riding in a row. That has been tough to do this month with plenty of other things going on. In my quest to reach my goal for the month I rode the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route for a total of 33.6 miles. This puts the week at 187.3 miles with a strong chance to exceed 200 miles. I haven’t done that since the week of August 7-13. I need to bike 344 miles the rest of the month to get my YTD to 6000 miles. Unless the weather craters I stand a good chance of getting there. I revised my goal for September from 300 miles to 700 to  reflect my chasing the YTD total.

The ride started at 11:01 AM and finished at 1:53 PM. Temperature at the start: 84 with 76% humidity. Temperature at the finish: 90 with 61% humidity. Scattered clouds and an 8 mph wind from the SE.

I wasn’t planning on a rest stop but my legs said otherwise so I stopped a the Stripes station at 22.4 miles. I refilled my water bottle and sat under the pump canopy for about 20 minutes before resuming the ride. The shade and breeze felt good.

Nothing really caught my attention during the ride. My timing was good to avoid the school traffic.

According to Strava my Stradalli Red Pro 14 bike has 24,572 miles ridden. Looking at it doesn’t show that and all of the drive train still works great. Shimano Ultegra is hard to beat.

Yesterday I mailed the Power Pod back to Velocomp for replacement. I hope to get the new one late next week. They are in south Florida and were hard hit by Hurricane Irma.

The dry weather and moderate temperatures should continue as I will riding tomorrow.

Texas Bicycling News September 14th 2017

Texbiker.net Posted on September 14, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 14, 2017

Please accommodate Conquer the Coast cyclists Saturday morning

Editorial Board, Corpus Christi Caller-Times | www.caller.com

Conquer the Coast, the annual bicycle ride around Corpus Christi Bay, already is a rare community event by virtue of happening only once a year. This year’s ride is rarer still, no thanks to Hurricane Harvey.
This year will be the (fingers crossed) only time that the event will be confined to a 21-mile loop of Ocean Drive and Shoreline Boulevard instead of the traditional 65-mile trek around the bay. The abbreviated route is a …

Blue Sky Returns Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 14, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 14, 2017

Off to the south and east on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for today’s bike ride. I rode 32.2 miles in great weather. Blue sky came back today and so did the warmer temperatures. At the 10:52 AM start it was 86 (69% humidity) warming to 91 (54% humidity) when I finished at 1:35 PM. Sweating was the order of the day but not like August. Wind was from the SE at 9 mph requiring more effort into the headwind but not strong enough to make a strong tailwind.

I stopped for a rest at the Huffman Chevron 21 miles into the ride. I was going to buy some blue Powerade from the beverage dispenser but they were out so I drank ice water which was just fine. For some energy to get to the finish I ate two fruit and grain cereal bars I brought along for the ride. The love bugs were not flying around today, thank goodness. After 20 minutes I was back on the bike for the 11+ miles to finish the ride.

Not much to see out of the ordinary except for the Harvey cleanup still going on in places. Some streets are almost debris free and others not.

I am at 5622 miles YTD leaving 378 miles to ride by the end of September to put me at 6000. 343 miles for September so far. If I ride those 378 miles I will hit 721 miles for the month.

More great bicycling weather tomorrow.
