About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

City Council to consider bringing car-, bike-sharing services to San Marcos

By Marie Albiges | communityimpact.com

… Spin bicycles
The City Council also discussed bringing Spin, a dockless bike-share company, to San Marcos.
The pilot program would bring an initial fleet of 150 Schwinn bicycles to San Marcos over the first two weeks of the pilot and expand to 550 over the first two months. The bicycles would be distributed in key transit areas, commercial zones and high-density residential areas.
Bicycles would have a locking mechanism on the back wheel that is unlocked through the company’s smartphone app, and bikes would be parked on wide sidewalks and at or near …

When and why did you decide to become a Bike Austin member?
I became a member this summer after I started thinking about all my Austin cyclist friends who have been hit by cars over the years (while following all traffic rules and literally staying in their own lane), and I decided to channel all my anger and frustration into positive action by volunteering with Bike Austin.

Long Sleeve Jersey September Cool Front Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 6, 2017 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 6, 2017

When I got up this morning and went into the breakfast area I thought I had been time shifted to the middle of October instead of September 6th. During the night a cool front passed through dropping .19″ of rain and the temperature to 69 degrees. By the time I was ready to leave for the bike ride it had “jumped” up to 72 degrees and I opted to wear a long sleeve jersey. Walking out the door I could feel the coolness and when I pushed the start button on the Elemnt computer at 9:55 AM and began moving I was glad I made the long sleeve jersey choice. For the first 4 or 5 miles of the ride I felt chilly but the sun made its way through the mostly cloudy sky and it started to warm up some. By the time I finished the ride the sun was shining and the temperature was up to 80 degrees when normally this early in September it would be in the lower 90’s.

With all of the Hurricane Harvey cleanup to the south I chose the “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route to the north. This is a shorter route than usual with only 27.3 miles. My wife has a doctor appointment at 1:30 and doesn’t like to drive the Jeep Wrangler so I needed to be back home in time to take her.

Not long after I started the ride I glanced down at the Elemnt computer and saw the cadence was not showing up. I checked to see if the sensor was transmitting and it did not show up. Time to change the battery, I guess. Somehow though the Strava data includes cadence average and max; not sure where that came from.

Not much happened along the route until I rode through Valley Ranch and had to wait a minute or so for the Montgomery County Precinct 4 work crew to load up a cut down tree. I don’t know if this was a victim of Harvey or it was just time to fall.

No rest stop today with the time constraint. I could’ve used one from fighting the 12 mph NE wind but once I headed back south it was mostly a tailwind.

Bicycle Crash Follow: Responses from TxDOT and HPD

bikehouston.org

A couple weeks ago I happened upon a bicycle crash on Heights Boulevard and I-10 on my way to work. Following the crash and after a review prompted by BikeHouston, HPD retroactively issued a ticket to the driver for failing to yield right of way to the cyclist. In a meeting with Assistant Chief Lori Bender and Captain Campbell at the Traffic Enforcement Division, HPD has promised to increase its enforcement efforts of the 3-foot safe-passing ordinance and …

A Word From Our Director……….. John Long

I am passing along this letter from the League of American Bicyclists about a new report on highway safety. “This report…emphasizes the need for better data, law enforcement training, and roadway improvements rather than placing the responsibility for addressing bicyclist safety to cyclists themselves.” We have begun this work in Houston — see Jessica Wiggins’ report in this newsletter about our ongoing work with HPD and TxDOT — we have taken the first steps in this direction and we have so much further to go.
Here’s the letter: …
