About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Camp teaches kids with Down syndrome, autism to ride a bike

By Nicole Villalpando | www.mystatesman.com

Inside the pavilion at Dripping Springs Ranch Park, bikes are lined up by size along one wall, just waiting for their riders.
They look like ordinary kids bikes, except these have a handlebar on the back of the seat and an extra rubber wheel on the back.
These two tweaks are how I Can Shine teaches kids with Down syndrome, autism and other physical and …

Video: Busy Bike Shops Ahead of Hotter ‘N Hell

By: Landon McBride | www.texomashomepage.com

With the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred kickoff just a week away, many riders are in condition and ready to ride, but still need to make sure their bikes are too.
Both Endurance House and The Bike Stop say they have plenty of work to do but expect it to get even busier next week.
Riders who are ready to ride still have one important thing to check off before rolling into the long line next week, making sure their bikes are ready too.
“It’s been pretty busy people are bringing in their last-minute tune ups to have their bikes checked over for the big ride,” said Larry Hein from Bike Stop. “Lot of flat tires, so the folks have been training a lot on the …

Cove House fundraiser draws 115 cyclists

By Jeff Steers | kdhnews.com

The 63-mile bicycle ride for Glenn Moreau should have been a drop in the bucket for the experienced bicycle rider.
The Copperas Cove resident participates in a 545-mile jaunt annually.
Moreau was one of 115 cyclists who rode in the 17th annual Cove House Classic Bike Tour event Saturday to benefit the …

First human-powered two-wheel device in San Antonio was a velocipede — an early form of bicycle.

By Hugh Hemphill | www.expressnews.com

The first recorded two-wheeled human powered device to appear in the Alamo city was a velocipede built by a man only known as Mr. Muhl in 1869, quite likely using bicycle wheels advertised on the same page of the San Antonio Daily Herald. The velocipede was an early type of bicycle. Sometimes they had no pedals and the rider essentially ran while sitting, raising his feet while going downhill and walking up them. Some had pedals connected directly to the front wheel, like a toddler’s trike today. Regarding Muhl’s achievement, the paper gushed, “Who will hereafter …

Captains Blog – 08/18/17 – Conquer the Coast

by Sameer Gokhale | cycling.powweb.com

Conquer the Coast
Couple of days back, this little event popped up in my news feed on Facebook. It looked interesting enough for me to dig a bit deeper. In short, it’s seems like a fun ride along the coast with some challenging sections.
Their 66 mile route description – “A challenge for even the most seasoned cyclist, this is the course that separates the joy riders from the die-hards. As you make your way over the Harbor Bridge within the first mile, you realize this is no ordinary ride. Once complete, …

A Very Good Man Exuding Kindness From Every Pore Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 18, 2017 by Rick AnkrumAugust 18, 2017

Back on the bike today after a day off yesterday while we went to the medical center and then to Conroe so my wife could visit her brother, Loyd Lockhart, who was in the ICU at Conroe Regional Hospital. He was injured in a tractor accident on 8/16/2017 and was not doing well. While I was out riding today my wife sent me a text message that he had passed away this morning. That is so sad because he was a very good man exuding kindness from every pore.

The ride started got delayed by my side gig (selling promotional products) answering emails from a customer so I didn’t leave until 11:06 am on the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route. Due to the sidewalk construction, which I remembered after starting, I altered the route to reach Kingwood Drive and then south to Atascocita. The sidewalk work continues making this a wise choice. I was concerned this might shorted the ride but I rode 40.4 miles boosting the week to 133.4 miles and August to 517 miles. I am 283 miles away from my goal for August.

About a mile into the ride I spotted an older Ford Explorer sitting at a strange angle almost in the Speedy Stop store entrance from Northpark Drive. The closer I got I saw the front bumper and other parts were missing and in the middle of the street where it and another vehicle collided. Some people were standing in the shade looking at Ford and around. I altered my route and cut through the Jack in the Box to go around the scene.

After that the ride went as planned through Kingwood, Atascocita, Walden and across Lake Houston. The weather was hot with mostly cloudy skies, temperature around 94, 55% humidity and a light breeze.

When I got to the May Community Center I refilled my water bottle and sat on a bench at the doors to call my wife to talk about her brother’s death. From there I rode to Huffman for a rest break at the Chevron station. This was 28.1 miles into the ride. I stayed there about 25 minutes drinking ice water and eating two fruit and grain cereal bars for energy to ride the last 11+ miles to finish the ride. Riding a few extra streets to be sure I rode at least 40 miles altered the route some more. I finished the ride at 2:47 pm.

More nice bike ride weather on Saturday so I plan on riding. I might start very early for me to get finished in time to watch the Vuelta a Espana stage 1 team time trial.

Matthews Park opens for residents, offers splash pad, trail and ADA equipment

By Andrew Branca | www.waxahachietx.com

WAXAHACHIE — Before the ceremonial ribbon was cut to open Matthews Park on Tuesday, children were already hard at work forging memories under the Texas sun.
Matthews Park is the city’s newest park and is located on the corner of Garden Valley Parkway and Harvest Grove Drive. It features a half-mile hike-and-bike trail, farmed themed splash pad, pavilion and playground.
Splash pads are mini water parks where children can jump through jets of water, fountains or even spray water at each other. The park also features an American with Disabilities Act approved swing that can be utilized by …

by jtotaro | www.planobicycle.org

At this writing (Thursday, 10:20 AM, Aug 17th) the weather forecast for the riding area on Saturday morning, Aug 19th is very good — The Weather Channel has it at 0% chance of rain, and temps for 7 AM are predicted to be 77 deg with light winds.
