About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hotter N Hell 100k: Hot With Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on August 24, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 24, 2024

I drove to Wichita Falls Friday to ride the Hotter N Hell 100k route today. Remembering the chip seal surface on FM2384 from last year I changed the tires on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike to 700×35 and aired them up to 58 psi. Thanks to some very nice friends (Jeff and Jodi) I shared a room at the new Delta Hotel near where the ride finishes. No need to drive from the hotel, find a parking spot, and ride to the starting line for the 110k.

My ride didn’t get off to a good start though. Riding to the start line I crashed while looking at the signs on where each distance would start. I turned left just as another cyclist rode up beside me and down I went. The video tells the story. I got up with road rash on my left knee and made my way to the 100k area. After the Star Spangle Banner finished 2 jets and 2 propeller planes flew over Scott Street heading north. That was at 7:05 AM. The 100k I was released at 7:27 AM. My road rash was stiff but after pedaling for some I didn’t notice the pain anymore. The hotel didn’t have enough ice for all of the riders so my CamelBak wasn’t filled with enough ice.

I skipped rest stop 1 but at rest stop 2 I filled the CamelBak with ice water and the water bottle with electrolyte. At rest stop 2 the route turned onto FM2384 where the super rough chip seal began. My 700×35 tires and lower pressure helped minimize the vibrations. This went on until we crossed Business US287 where the chip seal was worn smoother. At rest stop 3 I got more ice water and electrolyte in the water bottle. The water bottle wasn’t insulated and the didn’t last very long.

When I reached rest stop 4 I got more ice water. I brought an energy bar from the hotel and I ate it sitting in the shade. The rest stops didn’t have anything besides oranges, bananas, and pickles. Those weren’t what I needed. I decided to go to the medical area to get my road rash looked at. Two nurses took care of that in an excellent manner, checking my vital signs, applying cold cloths to my other knee and neck. With a bandage in place I rode off for the remaining 22 miles.

Not too long after leaving rest stop 4 Travis Armstrong appeared on my right side. He told me he and his family watch my YouTube videos. We talked for several miles. Travis has Parkinson’s disease and cycling helps him a lot. His son was at a place on the side of the road with watermelon and he dropped off to see him.

When I reach I-44 the route turned south into the wind making for hard pedaling. At the impromptu rest stop I stopped for some pickle juice and a few minutes in the sparse shade. Then I rode on the “real” rest stop 5. A snow cone and conversation with a lady cyclist under the tent shade prepped me for the last 10 miles. The wind was from the south at 10 mph with 20 mph gusts. Turning left over I-44 put the wind on my right until the next rest stop on the Air Force Base. More pickle juice and PBJ sandwich prepared me for the last few miles. Winding through the base the line of airmen cheered as I rode by aiming the GoPro towards them. I didn’t know but the wireless mic battery died then and I didn’t their cheers in the video. Off the base it was about 3 miles to the finish. The heat was high and the wind gusts strong until I made it to the finish line at 1:18 PM.

The link to photos I took during the ride.

Along the ride I scored 4 Strava top results. Three of them: 3rd fastest time on 1739 to 2345 (9:47), 3rd fastest time on tailwind stretch (49:08), and 3rd fastest time on Fowlkes Station Final Rise (2:32).

Austin is accepting donations to help replace bikes stolen from Camacho Activity Center

By Greta Díaz González Vázquez | www.kut.org

Ingrid Ristroph’s kids knew how to ride a bike, but this summer they learned how to do it safely at the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center.

“One of the things they learned that was powerful was how to bike and commute,” Ristroph said. “In terms of bike safety, they [center staff] were very organized.”

Over the summer, Ristroph herself learned a thing or two about riding around Austin.

But on Sunday, the bikes they used were among 16 stolen from the activity center in East Austin.

The bikes were used in multiple cycling education programs for kids ages 8 to 12. The programs include seasonal camps where kids ride from the …

Rails to Trails: Effort underway to create a multi-county hiking, biking trail

by George Slaughter | coveringkaty.com

FULSHEAR (Covering Katy News)—Four cities and a county have joined forces to create a 31-mile hiking and biking trail that will run through three counties.

When finished, the 1093 trail—for FM 1093—will run westward from Fulshear through Weston Lakes, both of which are in Fort Bend County. The trail will continue over the Brazos River and through Wallis, in southern Austin County. The trail will continue to Eagle Lake, in Colorado County.

The vision is that the trail would be a high-quality, safe trail requiring minimal maintenance and can encourage economic development. There is no definite completion or opening date, as plans are still in the works. But the 1093 Rails-to-Trails Project has been underway since 2022, when the four cities and Austin County formed the 1093 Rails-to-Trials Local Government Corporation.

Belinda Halfin, corporation chairwoman, said the project began when …

Houston’s Pat Walsh Bikeway makes headway

Jay R. Jordan | www.axios.com

The proposed naming of a bike route in honor of late Houston planning director Pat Walsh is closer to reality, although the section of path honoring him is shorter than advocates had hoped.

Catch up quick: In August 2023, community advocates and Walsh’s widow, Lindsey Aldrich Walsh, asked the city to officially designate nearly 10 miles of existing streets, paths and bike lanes from North Loop 610 and Nicholson Street south to Texas Medical Center as the Pat Walsh Bikeway.

They proposed a route running north-south, connecting the Greater Heights, Buffalo Bayou Park, Montrose and the Rice area. ...

Did You Know This Was Invented at the Hotter’N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, Texas?

Stryker | klaw.com

The annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred is this weekend and with the events officially kicking off tonight, let’s look back at a ride from several decades ago that lead to a pretty cool invention. Bike Invention Formed Right Here in Wichita Falls

If you want to test out some bike equipment, no better place to do it than on the 100 mile journey of the Hotter’N Hell Hundred. Turns out though, a quick invention was made back in 1988. Michael Eidson was taking part in our annual ride and wanted to hydrate without having to take his hands off his bike. So he took an IV bag filled with water and put it in a tube sock. This was he could suck the water out of the IV bag, without having to grab a water bottle. All these years later, you may know it as the CamelBak. …

Testing the Saturday Setup: A Modified Weekday Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 22, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 22, 2024

I dialed back the distance and improved the start time to 8:57 AM. Since I won’t ride the usual Saturday route (Atascocita – Huffman – Walden) I rode it today with some modifications to stretch the mileage to at least 35. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike with the DT Swiss wheels and tires I will use on Saturday to test the setup in case there are any changes needed. No changes needed. When I got to Kingwood Park High School traffic was heavy (Thursday is a late start day but I forgot) so I took Woodland Hills Drive north to Woodridge Forest to Northpark Drive. I stayed on the usual streets in North Woodland Hills Village and Bear Branch Village until turning off Tree Lane to add distance and avoid the covered greenbelt trail on Kingwood Drive. Through Town Center, W. Lake Houston Parkway south to Kings River Drive. Since I wasn’t expecting to see other cyclists I rode on Sunny Shores Drive to Rebawood Drive to Atascocita Shores Drive. At FM1960 I stopped at the Shell station to remove the sunscreen irritating my left eye and nose. Crossing Lake Houston road construction moved all the traffic onto the shoulder just before Fairlake Lane. The wind was from the SE resulting in a headwind until I turned left at FM2100 to head Huffman. On FM1960 west at the construction area traffic had 1 lane not needing the shoulder. At Atascocita Shores Drive I was tempted to stop at the Chevron station before looping through Walden but resisted because I was making good time and wanted to finish the ride before noon which I did at 11:57 AM. The week totals 154.43 miles. Saturday I plan on riding the 100k route which should make it a 200+ week. Weather: Start 82 degrees, humidity 79%, dew point 74.6, mostly cloudy, wind E 5 mph; Finish 91 degrees, humidity 64%, dew point 77,3, mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph.
