About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New Routes

Waco Bicycle Club | wacobicycleclub.com

Happy Tuesday!
We have lots going with respect to new routes both on- and off-road.
A. Road routes
1. Due to construction-based heavy traffic (in addition to more and more people and businesses moving out that way), the Tuesday night ride will be changed in some way.
a. The easiest thing to do is to ride it “backwards” and hope this leads to better timing concerning traffic. No doubt some will choose this as their first option.
b. I will be sending out …

Seminole canyon to Brackettsville
Monday February 27, 2017, 73 miles (117 km) – Total so far: 1,396 miles (2,247 km)
Seminole canyon to Brackettsville 73 miles
Challenging ride today. We woke up to dense fog. No sunrise today, just gradually increasing daylight. Everything is damp but not cold. 66 degrees. I was concerned about being visible on the highway so I wore my brightest jersey and turned on both my tail lights. Within an hour though, the fog lifted enough. Cloudy all day and not too warm.
There is a bypass around Del Rio, loop 79, that I took even though it isn’t clear that it’s correct. After a few miles I was back on route. I would suggest following that way because …

Ceiling Fan Legs vs The Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 28, 2017 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 28, 2017

I spent several hours yesterday afternoon and evening replacing the ceiling fan in our family room. I went up and down the step ladder what seemed like a hundred times working out my leg muscles. I think the biking helped me survive the trips and today I wasn’t hurting so I went for a bike ride on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for 33.13 miles. The wind was punishing, making my ceiling fan tired legs pay for the privilege to ride. From the south the wind moved at 18 mph with 26 mph gusts. When I started biking at 11:34 I knew the wind was moving around but I didn’t realize it was that strong. For the first 19 miles the route generally went into the wind and the few times a tailwind appeared I rode much quicker.

The 19 mile point came at the left turn onto FM 2100 and biking to Huffman was much easier though my legs weren’t able to supply the power they could’ve earlier in the ride. At Huffman I went west on FM 1960 and the trees and traffic on my left broke the wind some but once I was on the causeway over Lake Houston I held onto the handlebars because the wind wanted to push my wheels to the right. This was of the few times the wide section carbon rims take more effort than they save.

Once I crossed the lake and rode into Atascocita Shores I was protected some by the trees and houses. But the wind still tired to grab whenever I rode into where the wind wasn’t restricted.

Making good time I crossed Kingwood Drive well before the traffic got heavy and finished the ride at 2:06. That was when I noticed Strava.com was down due to Amazon.com S3 servers being off line. I will upload my ride data when Strava is back online.

As I rode back home I passed the spot where I tried to take pictures of the azaleas blooming on last Friday’s bike ride. This time the pictures were much better.

Ride Summary

Today’s bike ride is the last one for a warmer than usual February. My goal was to bicycle 345 miles and I beat that by cycling 495.1 miles. Below is a summary of February biking from the Golden Cheetah program. The mileage is slightly higher due to different calculation from SportTracks. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

Hike, bike trails could relieve Austin’s mobility headaches

Amber Downing | www.kvue.com

AUSTIN – A hike and bike trail might be the relief Austin-area drivers need for their traffic headaches.

Sanderson to Seminole canyon state park
Sunday February 26, 2017, 83 miles (134 km) – Total so far: 1,323 miles (2,129 km)
Sanderson to Seminole canyon state park. 83 miles. We have landed in a gorgeous state park for the night. Although a bit far from Sanderson it is very much worth the extra distance. Pristine site, quiet, with a huge sky, the horizon is so far away. This is Texas hill country and the road goes up and down and up and down relentlessly. The slope is never severe but just enough to be wearing after the 30th time. So after a detour to the wrong recreation area, I met up with Elizabeth to halt for tonight.
This part of Texas is so much greener and …

Bicyclists enjoy largest Jalapeno 100 field

By TRAVIS M. WHITEHEAD | www.themonitor.com

HARLINGEN — Flashes of red sped toward the finish line as onlookers welcomed their arrival with loud clapping.
The four cyclists had just completed the 27th Annual Jalapeño 100. About 800 people registered for the race.
The event offered five routes of varying lengths but they all began at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harlingen at 1209 W. Washington.
“We do it every year,” said Trudi Martinez, 57, as he cooled down in the shade with his wife and other relatives.
“It’s good weather, good everything,” he said. “It’s a family tradition.” …

Houston: Addicks-Tanner Trail Update: Probably 2018

by flangehead | www.bikeforums.net

Harris County Parks and MUDs 341 and 370 are progressing on the Addicks-Tanner Trails project, which will connect the crosswalks at Ginger Ponds and Tanner to the top of Addicks Dam. A map of the project is attached.
The layout of the trails and resolution of the associated right-of-way issues are now complete. The Corps of Engineers’ permit is in progress, and construction cannot be scheduled until that is issued. Though it might happen sooner, construction in 2018 is most likely.

Marathon to Sanderson
Saturday February 25, 2017, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,240 miles (1,996 km)
Marathon to Sanderson. 56 miles. It was a nice treat to be riding again. The body is completely comfortable and the pedaling is easy. Decent road surface mostly flat with little traffic kept it simple. The logistics of this section work best with a shorter distance but I would have loved to go further. Instead I worked on the bike and did laundry and tidying.
A couple of bulls on the road caused me to wonder how (or whether) to ride by them when a …
