About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicycle Given by Late Aunt Among Items Stolen in String of Brownwood Burglaries

By Chelsea Followwell | www.bigcountryhomepage.com

BROWNWOOD, Texas (KTAB) – Some families in Brownwood are left with less this holiday season after a string of burglaries and thefts.
One family had multiple items stolen from their home, including 6 firearms, 2 compound bows, and 3 gold chains, and a dirt bike. But it’s the theft of one child’s bicycle that has the family most upset.
Rosemary Satberry said her grandson Xavier had told her that his bicycle was gone but that she thought he was joking. That was, until he brought her a broken lock once used on his bicycle.
That bicycle meant much …

Unplanned Curb Hopping Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 28, 2016 by Rick AnkrumDecember 28, 2016

Warm weather continues in late December making for great bike riding. Today when I started biking at 11:32 it was 77 degrees with overcast skies and a 9 mph SW breeze. Riding to the north on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route the wind was friendly but making the turn back south at Roman Forest Blvd. I battled the wind until I rode back into Kingwood. Today’s bike ride totaled 34.79 miles moving December’s total miles to 190.

As I rode on Valley Ranch Parkway I decided to take a detour to check out the new stores under construction. Making my way past stores beside the new Kroger store a number of workers and trucks occupied the road in front. I turned right art the end of the Kroger store to head back to Valley Ranch Parkway. I didn’t pay close attention riding by the pharmacy drive through canopy and looking ahead a few feet was a curb and not enough distance to avoid it. I think it was a strange place for the curb since the soon to be customers will have to drive around it jutting out from the store to line up for the pharmacy window. I slowed quickly to lessen the jolt as my front tire hit the curb and went up onto the concrete surface followed by the rear tire bumping along. A rough ride but I survived it. Back at Valley Ranch Parkway there wasn’t a crossover to the west bound lanes so I had to ride back to where I made the turn into the shopping area and make a u-turn. As I rode I tried to notice any problems that might have popped up from the curb hopping but I didn’t find any. This reminded me of the “road furniture” in European bike racing.

I stopped at FM1314 waiting for the light to change at the 23.6 mile point. By then my average speed was suffering from riding into the wind. Back at Roman Forest Blvd it was 15.1 mph but now was 14.9 mph. By the time I finished at 2:07 my average speed was 14.4 mph.

I saw one other bicyclist as I rode in Oakhurst and we exchanged waves. Schools are out so no traffic problems there.

A “cool” front may arrive tomorrow morning keeping the high temperature in the 70’s. I am not sure if I will ride with family visiting.

I reviewed and updated the list of Texas bike shops. Check out the list and map in the menu above.

Cycling shops share tips for safe rides

By PAMELA CODY | www.brownsvilleherald.com

Bicycles are among the most popular gifts at Christmas, enjoyed by people of all ages.
And just days after Christmas, experts at Brownsville bike shops have some advice for those hoping to make cycling part of their routine.
“First of all, I’d recommend safety helmets, lights, and be prepared with hydration,” said Joe Aguilar, owner of JT Cycling. “Start out light, maybe 30 minutes, and …

Study finds Texas has the nation’s worst drivers

By Ronald Balaskovitz | amarillo.com

A recent study has concluded that the Lone Star state is at the top of the list for having the worst drivers in the country.
The five categories that factored into the scoring were fatality rate per 100 million miles traveled; failure to obey basic laws such as traffic signals, seat belts and having a valid driver’s license; drunk driving; speeding; and careless driving (which includes pedestrian and bicycle deaths).
The data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed …

Found: Dirt Bicycle Components is hand building carbon fat bike wheels out of Austin

By Zach Overholt | www.bikerumor.com

A new set of wheels is one of the easiest ways to upgrade your fat bike. Not only is there a potential for a huge weight savings due to the massive size of the rims and hubs, but there’s also the tubeless question. A lot of stock fat bike rims still aren’t tubeless compatible. That makes upgrading your rolling stock even more enticing – lighter weight, better performance, all in one go? Yes, please.
Based in Austin, TX, Dirt Bicycle Components is one of the newer component brands out …
