About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Giant Scoreboard Flag Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 26, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 26, 2016

As I turned off the I-69/US59 south service road onto Valley Ranch Parkway I could see the giant New Caney ISD Texan Stadium scoreboard was lit with the US flag. Tonight is the first football game and I suppose they are getting everything ready. As I rode closer I could hear marching band music and I thought the band was practicing but looking on the field no band was there and the music was piped in. I pass the stadium when I ride the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route which I was on today. I have heard the scoreboard is the largest high school stadium one in the US in 2015 but I don’t know if they still have that honor in 2016.

The ride started at 12:23 as I was slow to get going. The overcast sky was not drawing me outside and the small rain clouds on the radar was not encouraging. For the first couple of miles I rode in an intermittent drizzle but it wasn’t enough to turn back. The temperature was in the mid 80’s and the humidity was around 66% which made for a muggy ride. Whenever I stopped I could feel the sweat moving around on my body. Thankfully the wind was from the east and not a big problem and it became a nice tailwind on the way south from Tavola.

I arrived at the Porter Stripes at 2:02 at the 23 mile point of the 34.45 mile long ride. The timing wasn’t great because I would need to pass the Briar Tree elementary school during dismissal. My Elemnt screen when I stopped and the weather half way during the break.

8-26-2016 Porter Stripes
8-26-2016 Porter Weather

No Gatorade today, just ice water to wash down the two packages of snack crackers. This helped shorten the stay at the station and I was back on the bike at 2:30. I thought I would get passed the school before the parents took up the road but they were lined up on each side of the road approaching the school. I rode in the left lane to get around them until a couple of cars coming the opposite direction came into the right hand lane I had moved to. I stopped for them to position themselves so I could ride around.

Making my way through Oakhurst on the way to Kings Manor I hoped I would miss that school’s traffic but they were lined up there too. I suppose the first week of school causes the traffic to move slowly as parents get used to the flow and timing. Bear Branch Elementary traffic was long gone by the time I rode by there. I finished the ride at 3:28.

Two dog sprints today. The first was on E. Konx Drive just west of Loop 494. I had not seen this dog before and she stayed on the side of the road barking. The second was in Kingwood which is very rare. I was less than a mile from home on Oak Gardens Drive and a large white dog came out of the driveway barking and chasing me but he gave up after about 150 feet. I haven’t seen this dog before either.

I am up to 652 miles for August, 148 more to go to reach my 800 mile goal. The weather may not help me though. Rain is possible Saturday and Sunday.

My Recent Crash and The Nature of Competition

by Johnny Guzman

bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

Recently while doing a bicycle rally, averaging 20mph on my 1979 Schwinn Super Le Tour, a guy in front of me crossed wheels and took out my front wheel, resulting in a massive pile up that included at least six riders. Fortunately my bike went one way and I went the other when I crashed, otherwise I would have been a mangled mess. My Schwinn, however, was not so fortunate. The collision resulted in my handlebars, brake levers and crankset being totaled, in addition to knocking my fork and rear dropouts out of alignment. Despite the severity of my crash, I actually fared better than the others involved, and at least 3 guys in the crash had to be driven back to the starting line, their bicycles split into pieces. I was able to replace the …

Lethargic Legs Bike Ride To Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on August 25, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 25, 2016

Lethargic legs is a fitting ride title for today. After two rides in a row of 45+ miles each the body was not peppy as I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I planned on a shorter ride today and that is all I could handle. I rode 32.18 miles but a low overall average speed of 13.8 mph. It was hot at the beginning but after the rest stop at the Huffman Chevron the ride back home was cooler due to the rain to the west. I wondered if I would get wet before finishing the ride but I made it without any problem.

The rest stop at the Huffman Chevron came none too soon. My energy was low and the light wind was more than enough to slow me down whenever it was a headwind. My Elemnt screen when i arrived at the station and the weather while I was resting in the shade.

8-25-2016 Huffman Chevron
8-25-2016 Huffman Weather-1
8-25-2016 Huffman Weather-2

The yellow and orange on the weather radar was in the direction I was headed. I hear some thunder and later when i was riding towards Lake Houston on FM1960 I saw a couple of lightning strikes. I left the station at 2:01 which helped me get in front of the Kingwood High School traffic when they let out at 2:45. When I reached Kingwood Drive there was no traffic and I zipped across. I finished the ride at 2:50. Today I started at 11:48, earlier than yesterday.

For the month I rode 618 miles leaving 182 miles to hit my goal of 800 miles. Tomorrow’s weather has rain chance at 50% early then drops lower. I plan on biking after I watch the Vuelta a Espana.
