About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Great Timing to Avoid Rain on Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 20, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJune 20, 2016

My timing was just right today to avoid the rain just as I walked inside the house at the end of the ride. It rained about 1/4″ which was enough to totally soak me if I wasn’t already wet from all of the sweat I generated on the ride. I almost got soaked earlier in the ride when I left the Cumberland Shell station after a rest break. I rode up to the traffic light at Painted Blvd. to get onto FM1314. The first obstacle was an 18 wheeler, well actually 17 wheeler, stuck in the left turn lane with the driver side front tire leaning up against the truck and the axle laying on the pavement. I rode around the truck and dashed across FM1314 to ride SE toward Porter. As soon as I cleared the intersection big rain drops starting falling but they only lasted a couple of hundred feet and then I was out of them. I should’ve been warned by what I saw when I arrived at the Shell station; I could see heavy rain in the west past the Grand Parkway overpass over FM1314. I was glad to not be riding that far.

All of this took place while I rode the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route. I haven’t biked this route since the Grand Parkway construction finished restricting the lanes on FM1314 while the overpass was being built. I started late (1:09) because I waited for the streets at home to dry some from a quick shower, an earlier doctor’s appointment and talking to my oldest daughter on the phone.

To help lengthen the ride I rode south to Kingwood Drive and then back north. In Kings Forest I stopped at a small park and took this picture.

6-20-2016 Bike Ride Kingwood-2

This is a small pocket park off one of the through streets. I don’t know the background of why Herb Hudson’s name is there though. From there I wove my way west to US59 and Sorters Road before riding in Kingwood Place. The weather was hot but not as much as yesterday. This is the weather at my home when I left.

6-20-2016 Home Weather Start 1259PM

When I started riding on Old Sorters Road I could see some small puddles in the low spots in the asphalt from a recent rain but I avoided them. Riding NW on FM1314 took me to the Shell station where I rested with Gatorade and a Clif bar. The Elemnt screens when I arrived there.

While I was resting at the pumps a lady went in the store and when she came out she walked towards me and asked if I had a problem or was resting. I told her I was resting and said her husband told her to ask when she a biker because he rides bikes too. I told her I was resting and thanked her.

Biking SE on FM1314 I turned north to ride through Valley Ranch and I could see some dark clouds to the north. I hoped I would turn east before I ran under them and I did heading back to US59. At US59 I rode the service road south to Northpark Drive and then north to start winding my way back into Kingwood. After I passed through Woodridge Forest and into Sherwood Trails i felt a couple of rain drops and could see some dark clouds nearby. Riding the greenbelt trail the last 1/2 mile was wet from earlier rain but it didn’t cause a problem. I was back home at 4:09.

Tuesday’s forecast has a 50% chance of rain so I might get wet then.

Father’s Day Bike Ride West of the Lake

Texbiker.net Posted on June 19, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJune 19, 2016

The weather was hot again for my Father’s Day bike ride. I chose a shorter route because my wife is taking me out to eat after the ride. I rode the “Atascocita – Walden” route for a total of 25.64 miles. This route stays west of Lake Houston and to get to 25 miles I added a few side streets and a loop near the end. This is the first week this year that biked every day of the week. This is good but it looks like I will still fall short of my 975 mile goal for the month. I am up to 517 miles so far and with 10 biking days left I will need to average 46 miles per ride. I don’t think that is going to happen.

Lately when riding a southern route I ride through the Kingwood High School parking lot to avoid rough sidewalks. Today I stopped at the tennis court fence and took this picture.

I left home at 12:14 and got back at 2:10. No rest stops on this ride except for quick stop at McDonalds in Town Centre for some water to make it home. The weather at my home weather station when I got home.

6-19-2016 Home Weather Finish 220PM

Rain gets back in the forecast Monday and Tuesday but only around 50% or less. I plan on biking and maybe the rain will help cool things down including me.

Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association (GHORBA)

www.facebook.com

As riders are getting itchy to ride there’s been a number of postings on several of the FB trail groups regarding the status of DL.
1. DL bike trails are drying out, but remain closed based on a “handshake deal” between GHORBA(J Mackey representing) and the Forest Service. Pending more repair work 6/18, 6/21 and a 6/26 Work Party, the trail will be reopened after the 6/26 work party weather permitting. Campgrounds and lake are currently open. LSHT is open, but has tree and bridge damage in the DL area.
2. A couple of weeks ago, there were discussions regarding implementing a “hard” official Forest Service closure of the DL Trails. Anyone caught on trails could be subject to a $200 fine. With the Forest Service, it is …

Texas 4000 riders hope to make an impact

Most college kids would shudder at the thought of riding hundreds of miles in the sweltering southern summer heat on a bicycle.

Most college kids are busy planning summer vacations, recovering from a hectic school year or have enrolled in summer classes.

The Texas 4000 riders are not most college kids. Hailing from Austin, Texas, the non-profit student organization is
braving the summer scorch to make a 4,500-mile bike ride over a 70-day span from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska in order to raise money and …
