About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

High Water on Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 28, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMay 28, 2016

After not being on the bike Thursday and Friday due to heavy rain in our area I was able to to ride today. I chose a longer route, “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood”, to make up some of the miles I missed finishing with 46.19 miles. I left home at 12:06 and returned at 4:04. While I was gone I rode three places with water over the road. The first spot had the highest water moving me to the sidewalk to avoid the flooded Kingwood Green Drive. Another biker chose to ride in the middle of the street where the water was about 8″ to 10″ deep. The San Jacinto River was over its bank and flooding the golf course between the street and the river. I have talked to the other biker when we met on previous rides. After we got through the water and rode to W. lake Houston Parkway our paths parted.

Later as I rode on Vantage View Lane in Walden I could see Lake Houston had intruded into the backyards of the houses on the lake but no street flooding. The next flooded road was on Old Atascocita Road about 1/4 mile west of the Ramsey Road intersection. The fields were flooded and the cattle were hugging the fences to get out of the water. The road had about 4″ of water but I didn’t have a problem riding on the center stripe for about 100 feet. I thought this would be the last water crossing but after turning right onto Ramsey Road I could see water over the road ahead. This spot was about 6″ deep and about 150 feet long. The grass fields were lakes on both sides of the road. From that point I saw places where the water was on the road but receded.

With the rain hanging around the last two days today was a great change with partly cloudy sky, lots of sun and a 10 mph wind. It felt great and the humidity was not too high (52%). The wind was a problem whenever I rode south or west. The best part was when I was riding north on FM210 to Huffman with the tailwind. I made great time arriving at the Huffman Chevron at 2:28. As I was approaching the station I saw the biker I was with in Kingwood Greens and the water crossing. He had went east on FM1960 while I had went south and east. He stopped at the Chevron station and we talked about the water, routes we took and riding in general. He was riding his titanium Lightspeed. I believe his name is Eric and he lives in South Woodland Hills Village in Kingwood. I have seen in a few times this year but this is this time we talked. My Edge 520 screen when I arrived at the Chevron station.

5-28-2016 Huffman Chevron
5-28-2016 Huffman Weather

The weather while I was at the station was comfortable. After the other biker resumed his ride back home I sat down on the curb under the pump canopy to eat, drink and rest before starting the return leg to home. About 3:07 I got back on the bike and rode west on FM1960. The wind was somewhat troublesome coming from my left but whenever traffic passed I got some relief. At the Atascocita Shores Drive signal I turned right and from then on the wind was at my back. I did not ride on Kingwood Greens Drive like I usually do on the return home to avoid the high water. To compensate I took the longer way through Atascocita and in Bear Branch I took Maple Park Drive and Wildwood Ridge Drive to Deerbrook Drive way.

My Garmin Edge 520 performed well today with only one phone disconnect message followed by a phone connected message a few seconds later. This was early in the ride. As a backup I turned on the Ride With GPS app on my phone at the start of the ride. I did not need it though because the 520 recorded the whole ride, LiveTrack worked and the ride uploaded at the end.

I probably will ride tomorrow, Sunday, but I am not sure how long a route I will take.

This weekend’s rides: Liberty Hill! Red Horn!

by Thomas

steinerranchcycling.com

After last week’s hilly-as-hell Real Ale ride, let’s shoot for a flat-ish route and head up to Liberty Hill. Rather than nailing down the route exactly as usual, let’s leave a little bit of flexibility in our route so we can maybe avoid some of Ronald Reagan or find some new routes based on expertise from those that show. I expect the route to be around 65 miles or so …

Local cycling, running events becoming extinct

by BILL CULLINS

www.gosanangelo.com

Back in 2011, I wrote a column that discussed why there were very few local cycling events that year and listed some strategies to bring events back to San Angelo.
Unfortunately, the local cycling event situation has not improved since 2011 and the decline in events is starting to impact local triathlons and to a lesser extent running.
Running is still up in terms of the number of events and participants, but there are …

Day 47: Cedar Creek – Navasota: Feelin’ the burn (but I also feel the bern ;))
Tuesday May 24, 2016
Tyler drove me out to cedar creek in a rental car, which spared me about 10 miles of biking. It was hard to say goodbye but I guess luckily(?) it wasn’t drawn out since he sorta had to rush to return the car and make his flight. I started cycling around noon and it felt strange to be alone again. Most of the ride I was sort of in this haze. I felt exposed to cars for the first time in a while, but eventually I got used to it. I biked through Bastrop state park which was mostly burnt down from a fire in 2001 and it looked really trippy. Roosevelt had created the park in the 1930s after …

Day 39 – 46: Austin rest week: A Beer-lovin’ Vegan’s review of Austin
Tuesday May 17, 2016, 25 miles (40 km) – Total so far: 1,641 miles (2,641 km)
Austin was amazing for what it was, that being a city. While it had everything I could dream a city would: pedestrian and bike trails, vegan food, lots of breweries and unique bars, art, and a body of water; it was still lacking something. It was like the city was trying too hard. Perhaps I didn’t meet the right people. Also, the vegan food was damn expensive, so thank you Tyler for picking up half the tabs! I stayed at the HI Hostel in Austin the first two nights, which was super nice and I’d totally recommend it. The first day I was in Austin I did the usual touristy stuff, saw the Capitol, graffiti hill, and walked through the university- it’s huge and obviously gets a lot of funding! The bike path along the river is …

ATD is striking out with bike lane proposals this year

by owlman

bicycleaustin.info

As part of regularly scheduled street maintenance, Austin Transportation Department often proposes safety/mobility improvements like new bike lanes. Since the street will be re-striped anyway these improvements are usually free or very cheap.
Unfortunately, the last three proposals have been significantly scaled back due to drivers’ and residents’ concerns.

Proposed: Restrict parking on one side, separate bike/parking on the other side, so bike lanes will be free from parked cars.

Flooding At North Texas Lakes Keeps Some Areas Of Parks Closed

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – James Murphy oversees recreation at Grapevine Lake and six other lakes under control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“It makes me sick to see it like this,” says Murphy.

Downtown Austin pedals past others as most bikeable in the country

By Nicole Raney

austin.culturemap.com

Austinites love their bikes, and it’s a good thing, considering we’ve got one of the most bikeable downtowns in the U.S., according to Redfin.
The real estate website assigned Bike Score to cities with a population of at least 500,000 based on road connectivity, availability of bike lanes, prevalence of hills, and number of regular bike commuters. Downtown scored 93 out of 100, nabbing the No. 3 spot.
Redfin credits the City of Austin and its Active Transportation Division for downtown’s bikeability. The division is tasked with creating a safer network of …
