About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Almost A Metric Century Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 23, 2016 by Rick AnkrumApril 23, 2016

As I was getting to leave on today’s ride I told my wife I needed to ride 200 miles if I was going to reach my mileage goal for April. Then I laughed and said 50 or 60 miles will be how far i ride today. To go that far I decided to ride what i call the ” Montgomery County” route. Except for the first couple of  miles and the last 4 miles this ride was in Montgomery County. I wasn’t sure how far I would ride since i haven’t done this route since October 22nd 2011. Back then I only rode 48.43 miles compared to today’s 61.12 miles. The difference is because I rode FM3083 to Loop 336 today rather than staying on SH242 to FM1314 like in 2011.

The weather was so perfect I couldn’t keep myself from riding a shorter route. The sky was clear, the wind light and the temperature was in the 80’s. I think I would order weather like this for almost every bike ride. I got an earlier than usual start (for me at least) leaving home at 10:52 and I got back home at 3:42. This is the longest ride this year.

I stopped at the Valero station on FM3083 and Albert Moorehead Road to refill my water bottle and give my legs a break. I wasn’t there too long. This is my Edge 520 screen.

4-23-2016 Valero Station

The average speed was great due to the lack of wind. Before I got to the Valero station I passed the spot of a tragic truck and SUV accident a few days ago. The pavement was scarred and 4 crosses were standing back from the road.  I saw the Conroe city limit sign on FM3083 and it caught my attention with the population number at 71,000+. I can remember when it was around 25,000. Conroe is no longer a sleep town north of Houston.

The weather conditions when I was at the Valero station.

4-23-2016 Conroe Weather-1
4-23-2016 Conroe Weather-2

Rolling away from the rest stop I continued north on FM3083 to Loop 336 where I turned left to ride to FM1314. Traffic was good until I approached FM1314 where a piece of heavy equipment was being loaded onto a trailer parked in the right lane. I got around that and positioned myself in the left turn lane waiting on the signal to change. Riding southeast on FM1314 the light breeze offered more resistance than I had up to then but I was able to maintain a good pace. The shoulder is smooth and wide on FM1314. After crossing SH242 about a mile further the shoulder changes from asphalt to concrete and is even wider. For some reason the concrete shoulder seems to have more sand and rock debris than the asphalt but this might be location specific rather than road surface related.

When I reached the Shell station at Cumberland Crossing I stopped for a longer break to drink some Gatorade, eat a trail mix bar and a granola bar. I was tempted to buy something else but I resisted. I found a cool spot out by the pumps in the shade. The light breeze felt good while my legs recovered for the 14+ mile ride to home. People stopped at the Church’s Chicken store in the station building and I kept looking at the food pictures in the window but my resistance held up. The weather while I was resting.

4-23-2016 Cumberland Weather-1
4-23-2016 Cumberland Weather-2

Along with the great temperature the humidity was a dry 38% keeping my jersey dry. I did notice while I sitting by the pump that my shorts has salt in the ribs of the material. Somewhat rested I left there and rode on to Old Sorters Road to take the streets through Briar Tree and Oakhurst to get back to Kingwood. I could see some evidence of high water from the Sunday night rain in places along the ride but the water has drained out of the ditches the roads I was on.

Once I was back in Kingwood I slowed down as my legs were starting to notice how far they had pedaled. This pulled my average speed down from 15.7 mph to the final 15.2 mph average speed at the end.

I am now within 210 miles of my April goal. With 6 potential biking days left (Thursday I cannot ride) it will be a tall order to reach my goal but I will keep biking and see how close I can get. I will need to ride an average of 35 miles each day.

I did see one other biker near the end of the ride.

Back from the Rain Delays Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2016 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2016

After the rainy weather this week it was nice to have a sunny day. I didn’t need to dress warm with the temperature at 83 with partly cloudy skies so I wore shorts and a short sleeve jersey. It felt great to be in the sun and the breeze moving by. Because I haven’t biked but one day this week I am behind on my mileage goal for the month. I left home at 11:30 to ride the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route. This is a longer route and I planned to ride at least 47 miles to reach 500 miles for the month. I did that riding 47.94 miles moving my April miles to 501. This leaves me 271 miles short of my goal. I have some serious biking to do before the end of April. No more rain please!!

The ride passes through some areas that probably were very wet earlier this week but today I could not see much debris except the high water in Lake Houston as I rode on the FM1960 causeway.

As I was riding near Kingwood High School at the beginning of the ride another biker came around the corner from Kingwood Drive. We exchanged hellos as we passed. Later on Old Atascocita Road I saw another biker and we waved as we passed riding opposite directions. I wasn’t the only person out enjoying the dry and sunny weather.

Wind wasn’t a big issue until I made the turn onto Stroker Road on the way to FM2100 and then riding north on FM2100 to Huffman. My speed dropped while I was riding north to Huffman. Up to that point I had built my average speed up to 15.6 mph. When I arrived at the Huffman Chevron for a break I took this picture of my Garmin 520.

4-22-2016 Huffman Chevron

By then my legs needed a break and I was thirsty. I sat under the canopy eating a trail mix bar, granola bar and Powerade enjoying the cool breeze and watching the traffic. I decided to add some distance to the normal route by riding north on FM2100 to Smith Road and then west back to FM1960. Normally I take FM1960 west from Huffman. After checking email I took these weather screen shots.

4-22-2016 Huffman Weather-1
4-22-2016 Huffman Weather-2

By taking the different streets on the way back home from Huffman I added about 1 1/2 miles to the ride. Later on the west side of Lake Houston I took the longer way through Atascocita. On Kings River Drive i could see Lake Houston in one spot and the water was high but not threatening any homes. Riding north on W. Lake Houston Parkway over the San Jacinto River the water is still higher than usual but not as high as Tuesday when I biked. As I neared home I added some mileage by taking some different side streets. The ride ended at 3:23 as I pulled into the driveway. My legs were ready for a rest.

Tomorrow I want to ride about 50 miles. The weather should be great according to the forecast: 83 degrees and clear.

After the ride I called Garmin Support about my Garmin Edge 520. I have disabled the Bluetooth and today the 520 performed perfectly. My purpose was to tell them about my experiences and diagnosis on the Bluetooth problem.  I think the problem is the Bluetooth software in the 520. The tech support person I spoke with said they were aware of the Bluetooth problems and there should be a software update that will address the problem. I will be watching for the update. In the meantime Bluetooth will not be turned on.

Katy cyclist rides BP MS 150 with personal motivation

By Landan Kuhlmann

www.yourhoustonnews.com

Taking part in the annual BP MS 150 began as a personal mission for Katy resident Evan Jones. Following the news nearly a decade ago that his young niece was afflicted with the disease, however, his inspiration has since taken on a new form as he approaches the starting line each year.
This past weekend, Jones competed in his 16th BP MS 150 along with nearly 13,000 other cyclists as they made their way to La Grange as part of the (typically) two-day trek from Houston. However, Day 2 was washed out due to weather concerns. …

Crash sends cyclist to El Paso hospital

by Stewart McClintic

www.scdailypress.com

A crash involving a bicycle and a car Sunday sent the cyclist to University Medical Center in El Paso.
According to a police report, Dezarae Turner, 21, of Silver City, was riding her bicycle south on Pope Street toward the U.S. 180 intersection on Sunday afternoon when her brakes failed. Turner went careening through westbound highway traffic and into the eastbound lanes, where she collided with the back left bumper of a car driven by Tamera Ahner of Silver City.
Ahner told the Daily Press she saw the whole thing unfold while driving east on U.S. 180 toward Silver Heights Boulevard, and she tried to speed up so Turner would not strike her vehicle. …
