It would likely be a tough task to find a cyclist in Houston who thinks our city is “bike friendly.” You hear about bicyclists getting killed or injured in hit-and-runs somewhere in the Houston metro area pretty much every other week. Bike advocates say not to read the comments sections on any of those reports, because drivers will often say things like, “yeah, but it’s the bikers’ fault for not following the law!” Some appear to hate cyclists so much that they even started a petition to end the “illegal” Critical Mass social bike ride, saying, “Apparently, they consider it some kind of demonstration, but the only thing they demonstrate is selfish, childish, irresponsible, dangerous beghavior [sic] on our city streets.”

I heard rain and thunder all night long. I am glad I booked the hotel. Rain just kept coming, and I realized that no matter how long I wait, it would be the same. I at some leftover pizza and took my muddy bike out in the rain. I had my blinkies and my hi vis rain jacket on. About 2 blocks from the hotel, the rain started monsooning. My left shoe was already full of water, so I knew this was going to be a very wet day. About 4 blocks from the hotel, I realized that the rain jacket is more like a wind jacket. My shirt underneath was soaking wet.
I continued on through the back roads toward Lexington. There were occasional cars that slowed down when passing by me so as not to splash me. Gotta love Texas. Rain rain rain rain. And oh wait…Headwinds!!! Yay!!! I kept pedaling, but sometimes would get down to 8mph in these headwinds on the flats. When the headwinds died down, I would be doing the same speed on my hills. After one long hill, I had a great downhill where I was reaching almost 30mph. I was a little scared because of the rain but exhilarating at the same time. At the start of the next hill, guess what happened?….Dirt Road again!!! I thought I was …

I walked around the park and looked at the water. It is really nice here. There is lots of green grass and fishing. Last night I worked on the blog in my shelter, then ran over to the office under the tree to steal wifi to upload it to crazyguy. There was a lot of wind, but I was just fine in that shelter.
I started out around 10am since it wasn’t raining so much. I was extremely visible today. Bright rain jacket, front and rear blinky. I was originally going to Nails Creek State Park but these storms are supposed to be bad. I Googled a route to Giddings to get a hotel. Google did a great route in the beginning! There were quiet country roads that were paved. With about 17 miles left, my luck ran out. I hit dirt roads and the rain started coming down pretty well. I was really enjoying the comforts of the hotel this morning so I milked it for all I could. I checked out at 11am and went straight to Subway for lunch. I usually don’t like the cardboard that they call bread, but it was close and better than some greasy fast food burger. I ordered a 12” so I could have the second half for dinner. Day 3: Stephen F Austin State Park to Oak Thicket Park
Monday March 7, 2016, 57 miles (92 km) – Total so far: 121 miles (195 km)
I added some extra photos of the park as I was sitting there. I got up early today to get on the road because I knew I had a long day. It was quiet on these back roads to Sealy, TX. I arrived on the east side of Sealy to run down houses and fancy rims on pristine cars. As soon as I crossed the railroad tracks, everything changed. Interesting example of the phrase. I continued on 1094 out of Sealy and turned on FM 2187. This road was a little sketchy since there were no shoulders and the cars were flying by. Luckily all of them were quite courteous and pulled into the oncoming lane. Eventually I turned onto quiet back roads through farm and ranch land on my way to New Ulm. Along the way I had my first dog chase. I was at the top of a hill and the dogs were at a dog-leg turn to the left. The saw me from …

We will ride south of the border to the Dallas Farmer’s Market. Our Tour de Taco will head south by way of White Rock Lake then over to the newly reopened and renovated Dallas Farmers Market where Taqueria La Ventana recently opened a small counter restaurant. Other booths and stores serve food, as well. Riding in and around Downtown is a great and completely different experience from most of our club rides.
Please remember to bring a lightweight cable and lock to secure your bike.
