About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2016 Mellow Johnny’s Class Mountain Bike Race – Flat Creek Crossing Ranch

by TC www.turnincranks.com

My Cat2 40-49 mountain bike race video from the 2016 Mellow Johnny’s Classic held at Flat Creek Crossing Ranch near Johnson City, Texas.
The 2nd race of the Texas state 2016 series. Coming off of a 3rd place finish at Rocky Hill Ranch, I was gunning to improve my finishing position at a venue that suited my skills a bit more.
Flat Creek Crossing is a pretty technical trail, which suits me fine. There is one killer climb …

A perfect day for a bike ride around Huntsville

www.itemonline.com

More than 470 bicyclists took to the streets of Huntsville and Walker County last Saturday during the Huntsville Lions Club’s annual Raven’s Revenge Bike Ride, which is a BP MS 150 training ride.
The cyclists, some from as far away as England, had the choice of routes from 10 to 60 miles. Each route carried the cyclists through wooded hills of Huntsville that offered a great countryside experience.
The ride options went through Huntsville State Park, down Possum Walk Loop and through the rolling …

You Probably Won’t Die Biking These Six Houston Streets

By Meagan Flynn www.houstonpress.com

It would likely be a tough task to find a cyclist in Houston who thinks our city is “bike friendly.” You hear about bicyclists getting killed or injured in hit-and-runs somewhere in the Houston metro area pretty much every other week. Bike advocates say not to read the comments sections on any of those reports, because drivers will often say things like, “yeah, but it’s the bikers’ fault for not following the law!” Some appear to hate cyclists so much that they even started a petition to end the “illegal” Critical Mass social bike ride, saying, “Apparently, they consider it some kind of demonstration, but the only thing they demonstrate is selfish, childish, irresponsible, dangerous beghavior [sic] on our city streets.”
So when we asked about a dozen cyclists to try to think of the safest streets to ride in Houston, it was …

Why MSU: “I wanted to broaden my horizon when it came to my cycling career and attending this school not only offered that but the chance to achieve a degree in a field I love. I visited MSU before I made the decision to come here and …

Day 19: Navasota to La Grange
Tuesday March 8, 2016, 69 miles (111 km) – Total so far: 1,361 miles (2,190 km)
We had a tough ride today, fighting the wind, rain, and hilly terrain. Despite it all, we still managed to pedal almost 70 miles and reach our destination tonight, just before some of the bigger storms started rolling through.
This morning when we started out, we weren’t sure when exactly the rain was going to start, but decided to start out prepared with all our gear protected and rain gear on for when it decided to come. About a mile down the road the first shower came through. Throughout the morning the rain was off and on, but the sky cleared up nicely by the afternoon, and …

Andrew Willis heads back to RAAM Challenge in Marble Falls

by Pam LeBlanc fitness.blog.austin360.com

Look for Andrew Willis, director of the Driveway Bike Race Series, to show off his long-distance cycling chops at the upcoming RAAM Challenge Series in Marble Falls.

“Ride weekend typically has me loading up and heading out of town to some starting line on the horizon. Last Saturday was much like any other, but the trek to the start led to downtown Dallas!

Day 21: La Grange to Bastrop
Thursday March 10, 2016, 44 miles (71 km) – Total so far: 1,405 miles (2,261 km)
Short day on the road today. It was a nice day for riding, and although it was supposed to rain today we didn’t get any while we were riding. The cloudy sky made it a little cooler than typical around here, but it was still a good day to be outside on the move. And after taking the day off the bike yesterday, we felt ready to go …

2016 Bike Camping in Texas

By Clark Crews www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 5: Giddings, TX to Lexington, TX (Sonny’s RV Park)
Wednesday March 9, 2016, 24 miles (39 km) – Total so far: 176 miles (283 km)
I heard rain and thunder all night long. I am glad I booked the hotel. Rain just kept coming, and I realized that no matter how long I wait, it would be the same. I at some leftover pizza and took my muddy bike out in the rain. I had my blinkies and my hi vis rain jacket on. About 2 blocks from the hotel, the rain started monsooning. My left shoe was already full of water, so I knew this was going to be a very wet day. About 4 blocks from the hotel, I realized that the rain jacket is more like a wind jacket. My shirt underneath was soaking wet.
I continued on through the back roads toward Lexington. There were occasional cars that slowed down when passing by me so as not to splash me. Gotta love Texas. Rain rain rain rain. And oh wait…Headwinds!!! Yay!!! I kept pedaling, but sometimes would get down to 8mph in these headwinds on the flats. When the headwinds died down, I would be doing the same speed on my hills. After one long hill, I had a great downhill where I was reaching almost 30mph. I was a little scared because of the rain but exhilarating at the same time. At the start of the next hill, guess what happened?….Dirt Road again!!! I thought I was …

2016 Bike Camping in Texas

Day 6: Lexington, TX (Sonny’s RV Park) to Taylor, TX (Hotel)
Thursday March 10, 2016, 38 miles (61 km) – Total so far: 214 miles (344 km)
It was a nice night in the rec room of the RV park. I was able to fall asleep watching tv. I slept like a baby, while it continued to rain outside. It took a lot to wake up. I finally go t out of bed and started packing the bike. Where is my tent??!!? I must have left it over under the garage overhang near the office. I walked over there, and there it was! Thank goodness. I head out, and was immediately panged with the hungers. Across the highway is Subway, so I decided to stop in for breakfast/lunch. After loading up, I worked my way through town to 112 that would make my way through the country side toward Taylor. It was not raining any more, but misting the whole way. I thought it was going to be an “easy” day, but NOOOO! What attacked me were the longest and steepest rollers yet. At least the cars were courteous and gave …

The Overnight Bicycle Tour – Bicycle Touring for Busy People

www.bikegurus.com

In less than two hours, in Houston, Texas at the 2016 Texas Trails & Active Transportation Conference, I’ll be talking about a subject that is near and dear to my heart – the Overnight Bicycle Tour. When I first started discovering transportation cycling, reading issues of Adventure Cycling was often an exercise in living vicariously. I’d imagine being one of those epic, coast-to-coast tours across the United States. Then I’d think to myself, “Yeah, right…you’ll never be able to take a month off of work to do something like that!”
That may indeed be true. It was, honestly, a little depressing. Then I discovered and really started …

Spring Creek Greenway: Largest forested U.S. Urban Greenway experiences major progress

Jacqueline Havelka www.ourtribune.com

Although northeast Harris County has changed dramatically over time, the thousands of acres of bottomland, hardwood forests along Spring Creek are the same forests that were here when the indigenous Akokisa people inhabited this area more than 200 years ago. Thanks to a joint effort between Harris and Montgomery counties, the lands will stay preserved into the distant future. The counties’ plan involves creation of the Spring Creek Greenway, a 46-mile continuous trail system designed to protect the pristine 12,000-acre Spring Creek habitat. The acreage on both sides of the creek will be preserved, creating an area for ecotourism, education and outdoor recreation. The Spring Creek Greenway is …

TxDOT seeks public input on FM 1960 expansion

The roadway will be increased from four lanes to six (three in each direction), with a raised-curb median in the center and 5-foot sidewalks on both sides. The two inside lanes will be 12 feet wide, with the outer lanes at 15 feet wide and designated as “shared lanes,” to accommodate cyclists. There will also be an overpass at W. Lake Houston Parkway where drivers can pass over the road, or stay on the surface portion below. …

By Jennifer Miller www.corsicanadailysun.com

Hundreds of bikers are coming to town this weekend, but not the Harley Davidson kind. It’s time for the fifth annual Tour of Corsicana stage race presented by the Corsicana Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, and the Dallas Racing Club.
The race welcomes spectators with local vendors hosting sidewalk sales, and plenty of delicious food for all.
“There is absolutely something for everyone,” said Joanna Fritz, president and CEO of the Corsicana and …

THE BIKE RIDE ACROSS TEXAS: A LEARNING LABORATORY

Coleman Patterson, Ph.D. www.wheelbrothers.com

As a management and leadership professor, I am constantly looking for ways for my students to implement and practice the theories and principles that they read about and study in class.
Simulations, case studies, group projects, various types of research proposals, internships, and experiential learning activities are typical methods used by educators in my field. Most of those techniques are limited in their effectiveness—because many tend to be short-term, lack realism, require minimal buy-in and involvement, allow for free-riders, and incur a relatively low cost of failure. The challenge for …

Day 4: Oak Thicket Park to Giddings, TX
Tuesday March 8, 2016, 31 miles (50 km) – Total so far: 152 miles (245 km)
I walked around the park and looked at the water. It is really nice here. There is lots of green grass and fishing. Last night I worked on the blog in my shelter, then ran over to the office under the tree to steal wifi to upload it to crazyguy. There was a lot of wind, but I was just fine in that shelter.
I started out around 10am since it wasn’t raining so much. I was extremely visible today. Bright rain jacket, front and rear blinky. I was originally going to Nails Creek State Park but these storms are supposed to be bad. I Googled a route to Giddings to get a hotel. Google did a great route in the beginning! There were quiet country roads that were paved. With about 17 miles left, my luck ran out. I hit dirt roads and the rain started coming down pretty well. I have slicks on my bike, so I was slipping and sliding everywhere. There were a lot of drilling rigs, meter sites, and compressor stations on …

Bicyclist’s Murder: DA Palmer Pushes for Firm Trial Date

By Joe Hyde sanangelolive.com

Defendant Stephano Culbreath sat in the rear of the courtroom of Judge Ben Woodward’s 119th District Court Tuesday afternoon. The question in the courtroom was what date would his murder trial commence?
51st DA Allison Palmer for the prosecution wants a firm goal of May or June.
Woodward addressed the defendant, “Why don’t you come up here and sit next to your counsel.”
“Yes sir,” Culbreath replied. He then left the deputy guarding him near the back and walked to the …

2016 Bike Camping in Texas

Day 2:Katy, TX to Stephen F Austin State Park
Sunday March 6, 2016, 27 miles (43 km) – Total so far: 64 miles (103 km)
I was really enjoying the comforts of the hotel this morning so I milked it for all I could. I checked out at 11am and went straight to Subway for lunch. I usually don’t like the cardboard that they call bread, but it was close and better than some greasy fast food burger. I ordered a 12” so I could have the second half for dinner. Once on the road, I had to battle suburbia traffic with giant trucks and SUVs. I finally got on Hwy 90 and headed west towards Brookshire. There was a huge shoulder most of the way thank goodness since there was a cross wind that blew me …

Day 3: Stephen F Austin State Park to Oak Thicket Park
Monday March 7, 2016, 57 miles (92 km) – Total so far: 121 miles (195 km)
I added some extra photos of the park as I was sitting there. I got up early today to get on the road because I knew I had a long day. It was quiet on these back roads to Sealy, TX. I arrived on the east side of Sealy to run down houses and fancy rims on pristine cars. As soon as I crossed the railroad tracks, everything changed. Interesting example of the phrase. I continued on 1094 out of Sealy and turned on FM 2187. This road was a little sketchy since there were no shoulders and the cars were flying by. Luckily all of them were quite courteous and pulled into the oncoming lane. Eventually I turned onto quiet back roads through farm and ranch land on my way to New Ulm. Along the way I had my first dog chase. I was at the top of a hill and the dogs were at a dog-leg turn to the left. The saw me from …
