About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New Caney – SR242 – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2016

Some days technology just loves to thumb its nose at me. I was delayed getting started on the ride because our Epson printer/scanner decided to forget the wifi password and I couldn’t get it to connect for awhile. Finally I got that fixed and got ready to ride. I left home at 12;14 and around .90 miles my Garmin Edge 520 told me my phone was disconnected. I figured it would reconnect like it did in the past but not much further on the ride I got a message on the 520 telling me the pairing code to enter on my phone to complete the Bluetooth pairing. I opened my phone settings and then the 520 said it was connected again. Off I went in an ignorant bliss thinking the problem had been fixed until I was in Woodridge Forest and I checked the 520 status screen to find my phone was not connected. I messed around trying to get Bluetooth to pair and finally powered off my phone and then powered it back up. Wow!! the 520 and Nexus 6P decided to talk to each other and I was back biking again.

Last night when I went out to move the trash can for today’s pickup I reached over and pinched the front tire for some reason. It was flat. After getting the trash positioned I took the wheel inside to fix the flat. This was a frustrating event. I had bought several patch kits from BikeTiresDirect.com. I got the one out of my saddle bag and proceeded to find the hole. At first it didn’t show up but after inflating the tube more I could feel the air escaping. I marked the spot with an ink pen ( I have a history of missing the hole with the patch) and let the air out. Next I checked the inside of the tire to try and find the cause but couldn’t find anything sticking out or in. Using the sandpaper I roughed up the tube at the hole. Putting the glue on I let it dry and positioned the patch pressing it in place. Before putting the tube back in the tire I pumped the tube up and the patch came loose. I sanded the spot again and tried another patch kit, same result. The third attempt failed as well. Switching to a Nashbar patch kit I thought this would surely fix the hole but it failed too. I think there was too much glue for the Nashbar patch to hold. Their kits have worked in the past. I gave up and put a new tube in the tire, put it in the tire and back on the wheel. Airing up the tire no problem happened and I checked it again this morning and it still was firm.

Today’s ride was great. I left the long sleeve jersey at home with the temperature in the mid 80’s. The wasn’t clear blue like yesterday with high clouds. The wind was out of the SW at 12 mph. That was great riding north to SR 242 and when I made the turn around crossing over US59 my average speed was 15.7 mph. From that point I was facing a strong headwind and my speed dropped to 12 to 13 mph and my average speed started going down. Today’s route is an extension of the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” one. I took the next crossover of US59 north of Roman Forest Blvd. I don’t have any recent rides using this exact route. Normally at SR242 I go west.

This took by the New Caney ISD Stadium where the Grand Parkway Bike Ride will begin this Saturday. I expect the parking lot will be full but today it was empty.

I continued into the wind all the way to the Stripes station at FM1314 and Valley Ranch Parkway (or Blvd depending on which sign you choose). My legs needed a rest after battling the wind for 8+ miles. I bought some Gatorade and sat in shade to eat a trailmix bar and a granola bar. Before I went inside to get the Gatorade I took this picture of my 520.

3-15-2016 Bike Ride Stripes Stop

The weather while I was at Stripes.

3-15-2016 Porter Weather-1
3-15-2016 Porter Weather-2

I left Stripes and headed home arriving there at 3:19. The winding roads and streets meant I was in and out of the headwind which helped.

March miles are up to 355.91. Only 275 more miles to reach my goal for the month. The weather looks favorable for biking tomorrow (Wednesday). Thursday I will take my wife to the medical center for her cancer treatment. Friday’s forecast shows some rain. Saturday I plan on riding the Grand Parkway Bike Ride in New Caney.

Cycling deaths continue despite safety efforts

By Dug Begley www.houstonchronicle.com

Houston motorists and bicyclists share at least one attribute: blame.
“We get a lot of complaints from motorists and cyclists about the other group,” said Lt. Michelle Chavez, who heads up special operations for the Houston Police Department, including efforts to educate drivers and riders on safer streets.
With hundreds of thousands of drivers and thousands of cyclists, it can be an uphill battle to make sure everyone knows the rules of the road. Chavez, speaking to a state trails conference in …

Mar 14: To Coldspring
Monday March 14, 2016, 77 miles (124 km) – Total so far: 1,681 miles (2,705 km)
I was up and ready for an early start. My first early start since the clocks changed. I clearly got up too early as it was dark for a while and then thick fog for another while after sunrise. So I hung around a bit at the campsite before leaving. I managed to pull up some brief highlights of the recent …

Bluebonnet Express Ride Report

By Peter Radowick www.wheelbrothers.com

The yardsticks used to measure a successful road cycling event vary depending on which side of the saddle you sit. Race organizers want to attract enough riders to, at minimum, break even and have a drama-free event. Cyclists want value for their entry fee. They want course options, smooth roads, a little swag, and, in Texas anyway, a perpetual tailwind blowing them down the road.
Cyclists are a self-sufficient bunch, but when …

May Park Community Center – Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 14, 2016 by Rick AnkrumMarch 14, 2016

I took yesterday off to allow my legs to recover from Saturday’s 61 mile long bike ride around Magnolia. Today I biked around Huffman on the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route for a total of 40.47 miles. This was the first ride on this route in 2016. My last two rides total 102 miles. That’s a great addition to my March mileage goal. I am now up to 321 miles leaving 310 miles to go.

Weather was fantastic and I probably overdressed for a change. It was in the 80’s when I left home at 12:02 and 91 when I got back at 3:27. The sky was about as clear blue as it can get and the SW wind was around 8 mph at the airport. I wore a long sleeve jersey under my new Primal Wear Black/white/red Warrior short sleeve jersey. I should’ve left the long sleeve jersey at home. The only time I might have missed it was when I was on the way home biking over Lake Houston on FM1960.

When I rode past Bear Branch Elementary school it dawned on me that it is spring vacation. This meant I didn’t have to worry about school traffic. Later on the way to the May Community Center I rode past Hargrave High School east of Huffman. They are on spring break too; a different school district from Kingwood.

Arriving at the Huffman Chevron I took a break to get ready for the 11+ miles to home. I had stopped at Dollar General on FM2100 tto buy a couple bags of chips to go with my trailmix bar and granola bar. Sitting under the pump canopy the breeze was just right to cool me off. I was there about 38 minutes. The weather screenshots and Garmin 520 just after I arrived at the Chevron station. (I need to figure out how to take a picture of my Edge 520 without all the glare.) Click on the images to enlarge them.

3-14-2016 Bike Ride Huffman

The ride home from the Chevron station was into the wind until I turned right on Atascocita Shores Drive. To add some mileage to the ride I went on some different streets than I usually do when I return from Huffman. It was easier getting across Kingwood Drive without the school traffic.

Texas Bicycling News Roundup March 13th 2016

Fallen Friend and MTBer

by throet www.bikemojo.com

Most of you on this blog don’t even know me, let alone my dear friend Todd Lang whose life last week was cut way too short. What’s relevant is that Austin is my home and Todd, who’s ridden all over the U.S., loved coming here to ride and have fun. In fact after his first trip here, he ended up shipping one of his many bikes here so that he could visit regularly Fall thru Spring to enjoy riding, exploring, and recreating (not to be confused with re-creating). Unfortunately he only got to enjoy two such visits, the last one in early Feb. During his visits here we managed to ride Deception, RPR, Pace Bend, Reimer’s Ranch, and WC. Of course we also enjoyed many of Austin’s fine establishments, and he especially liked ABGB and the Oasis Brewery. Like many of us MTBers, Todd thoroughly …
