About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hefty MTB Stayed Home on This Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 18, 2015 by Rick AnkrumNovember 18, 2015

After yesterday’s front moved through southeast Texas the sky cleared and the roads dried off from the 1.66″ of rain. The temperature dropped during the front’s passing dropped from 77 to 53 in a little less than an hour. The cooler temperature hung around today with 48 degrees when I got this morning. By the time I left on the ride at 1:02 it was up to 72 but the wind had a chill to it. I countered that by wearing a long sleeve and short sleeve jersey with my shorts. Once I warmed up I didn’t really notice the coolness as much.

While I was waiting for the rain to stop yesterday I took the digital scale out to the garage to weigh my Motobecane 700HT MTB. I always thought it weighted about 23 pounds but the scale showed 32 pounds. No wonder I am not as quick on this bike. Getting it out of the garage I need to lift the front wheel and walk between the two Jeeps. It takes a good tug to get the bike up on the rear wheel. I see why now.

Today I chose the road bike (17 pounds) and noticed the much quicker response. I averaged 15.4 mph at one point ending up at 14.9 mph by the time I got home at 2:50. The route was on roads I normally ride on but this time I shortened the distance to 25.33 miles by turning around at E. Lake Houston Parkway on FM1960 east of the lake. I named this the “Kingwood-E Lake Houston Pkwy” route.

Since I shortened the route I didn’t take a break. I turned around and rode west on FM1960. As I approached Fairlake Drive another biker came across FM1960 to the west bound shoulder. I followed him over the causeway and onto Atascocita Shores Drive. I was about 75 feet behind him all the way until before the stop sign on Atascocita Shores. I waved and turned left while he went straight. He wore a red and black jersey with a SBW logo that I did not recognize.

I got to Kingwood Drive before Kingwood High School lets out but I missed an opening in the traffic and waited 2 or 3 minutes to get across. From there it was smooth riding to home.

I am getting closer to my 2015 goal of 6500 miles. I am up to 6433 miles now. Maybe I will ride again on Friday. Another cold front arrives on Saturday, if the weather gurus are right.

13-year-old boy critically hurt in bicycle-car collision

Tour Das Hugel = Roadie EB – Lessons learned

by Tree magnet        www.bikemojo.com

Not getting to ride the EB this year left a hole in my riding soul that I was really struggling with. This lead me to toy with the idea of riding the roadie equivalent known as the Tour Das Hugel consisting of 113 miles of Austin roads connecting somewhere around 10k ft of climbing. The perfect storm came together on Saturday when my plans for Wurstfest were rained out, Cameron park conditions were iffy, and all my riding buddies were MIA. Below are the lessons I learned:
1. Hills are the equivalent of trails for road riders.
2. Big View is the equivalent of Thumper. It comes late in the ride, punches you in the face, and you know it’s coming for a LONG time but there isn’t anything you can do about it.
3. Road riders are fast as shit. When it comes to putting power down to the ground, it is amazing to watch.
4. Nothing compares to trail angels. 113 miles with two aid stations and no real emotional support. I missed having just one person caring that I made it up Jester.
5. You don’t really appreciate how much the EB crew does to make the event special until you don’t have it. The Hugel was more of a ride than an event. Big difference IMO.
6. Bombing down hills in the rain at 40 mph + is crazy on so many levels. I had disc brakes and …

Concerns Over Dead End In Brownsville Reach Boiling Point

www.krgv.com        Video

City presented with two plans to fix the problem
Brownsville – Drivers and cyclists are calling a closed down frontage road in Brownsville a dangerous situation.
The frontage road dead ends to make way for Union Pacific railroad tracks. That railroad was put in after the road was built, in an agreement between Tex Dot and Union Pacific.
Mark Lund, Director of Brownsville’s Metro Planning Organization, says “at that time it was described as a temporary solution, but it’s been over a decade, it doesn’t sound temporary to me. It’s one of the few places in Texas where you have an interstate with no frontage road.”
The blockade creates a dangerous scenario for drivers. Without the …

The Austin Cyclo-cross Cup: Reaching Out To Those Who Need It Most

www.usacycling.org

Everything is bigger in Texas. At least, that’s how the saying goes. But when it comes to cyclo-cross, the biggest movement in Texas is actually focused on its smallest racers: the juniors. This is a conscious effort, of course, and one designed to grow the sport consistently. But it does stand out as a unique feature of the racing community throughout the Central Texas region. While virtually every cyclo-cross series in the country supports junior racing categories, very few feature it the way this small, but growing series does. The Austin Cyclo-cross Cup doesn’t merely support juniors; it is based on the idea that junior racers are the …

Bike trailhead likely to move with Longview Arboretum completion

Director of Community Services Laura Hill said members of the Longview Bicycle Club were told about the arboretum plans for the land when they first approached the city about the bike trail there.
“We did discuss the fact that in the future their …

On Rules & Road Bikes: The Ten Commandments

By: Olivia Starich        www.tetongravity.com

Distance biking: when logic goes out the window and you cater to every weird whim you have. Olivia Starich photo.
“The Tits were calling.” You could say that’s how I ended up on a charity ride from Austin, Texas to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. 28 days on a bike. Somewhere in the ballpark of 2600 miles, plus the 1600 or so we rode in training.
In the year and a half that I spent prepping for the ride, I don’t think I ever anticipated what I was in for. The 28 days I spent on my bike were among …

Austin gets gold status on list of Bicycle Friendly Communities

Take a bow, Austin cycling community.
Our city has been upgraded to gold level status on the League of American Bicyclists’ list of Bicycle Friendly Communities. That makes us the only city in Texas, and one of just 24 in the country, with gold status.

Five cities – Madison, Wisc., Fort Collins and Boulder, Colo., Portland, Ore., and Davis, Calif. – all have the …
