About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Northshore Loop 5

Average Texas MTBer | www.youtube.com

Quick little ride at Northshore trail loop 5. Bummer I didn’t get a clean video of the climb. Nailed it the next 2 times I rode the loop after this. Oh well. Trying out a new helmet mount for the GoPro.

Round the Block: The last leg

Day 23 – Marfa Rest Day

Sunday October 15, 2023, 6 miles (10 km) – Total so far: 1,158 miles (1,864 km) Today was a much needed rest day. It was a little bit of a weird place to have it. I always like rest days at hotels. It just takes a lot less effort. ? Slept in as long as I could and it was a bit chilly to get out of the tent because I was in that warm bag. My kids gave me this great bag as a gift awhile back and I love it.

A good part of the group went to a place called Buns and Roses for breakfast. I think we overwhelmed them but it was delicious. Spent a lot of time in there talking with Peter about world religions. He taught philosophy and religion at Arkansas State, I think, and I found it interesting to talk about what students are interested in. Peter, Beth and I spent a good part of the morning in there talking.

Did a little bit of Sunday study on my own coming back to camp and …

What Strong Wind You Have. The Better To Test Your Legs!

Texbiker.net Posted on October 15, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 15, 2023

After getting home from church I watched the women’s cyclocross race from Waterloo, WI, before starting today’s bike ride at 2:00 PM. The challenge for the bike ride was the strong NW wind, 17 mph with 30 mph gusts. The temperature edged up to 70 degrees making the wind’s bite a little crisper. To combat the wind chill I wore a heavier long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey. Riding in the shade out in the open was chilly in the early part of the ride. Once I warmed up it was quite as cool. Because of the start time and the wind I rode the Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Kingwood route in place of a more northerly turn around point in Valley Ranch. The actual route went through Auburn Trails section of Oakhurst while the previous rides on this route didn’t go that far north and were a few miles shorter. Today I biked 26.24 miles ending the week at 235.28 miles. Biking north to Auburn Trails was the hard part of the bike ride due to the wind. The trees helped break the wind sometimes though. When I finished the wind was even stronger than the start: N 22 mph gusts 31 mph. It could be chilly tonight.

Texas Bicycling On The Roads – October 14, 2023

Round the Block: The last leg

By Curtis Stoker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 22 – Van Horn to Marfa, TX: I’m not going to complain about the wind.

Saturday October 14, 2023, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,152 miles (1,854 km) The group decided last night to eat breakfast at 7:30 instead of 7, but with the time change, it is still dark at 7:30. It was probably good because we got on the road pretty early with the light and the way the day turned out we needed it.

Like I said last night, the campground was terrible. It had all these thorn plants. I don’t think they could flatten a tire but they were terrible for the tent. You could feel the thorns poking through the ground tarp and the floor of the tent. I put a bunch of clothes under my sleeping mat to try and keep it from getting punctured. I think I was successful. It will be interesting to see if I have stickers in my clothes. ? I had to make sure …

What Is This Chilly Wind Doing Here? Solar Eclipse Sunlight.

Texbiker.net Posted on October 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 14, 2023

Chilly air (my definition) arrived early this morning delaying my bike ride until 10:33 AM. I didn’t realize the wind was so strong until I took a screenshot of the current conditions: from the N 14 mph gusts 22 mph. Good choice with a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey on top. It took about 15 minutes for my legs to stop complaining about the chill. Planet wise west, central, and south Texas experienced a solar eclipse around noon. I noticed the sunlight change as I rode east over Lake Houston and wondered if maybe my sunglasses were causing the strange light. It didn’t last more than 15 to 20 minutes. With the late start I didn’t expect to see other cyclists but one passed on Kings River Drive going the opposite direction. I rode the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route anyway just in case a stray cyclist passed my way. Typically this route is 32 to 33 miles but today I rode 35.38 miles pushing my week total to 209.03 miles. Last week i didn’t get to 200 miles. The wind was still chilly when I finished at 1:26 PM. Weather for the bike ride: Start 68 degrees, humidity 49%, dew point 47.8, a few clouds, wind N 14 mph gusts 22 mph; Finish 70 degrees, humidity 48%, dew point 49.3, a few clouds, wind N 14 mph.
