About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Council approves trail plan amendment

By Rick Mauch | www.community-news.com

Work could begin soon

The next step toward a connecting trail system that will include Willow Park was taken Tuesday, Oct. 10, when the city council approved an amendment to the city’s 2019 Parks & Trails Master Plan.

In January the council approved a proposal by the firm of Baird, Hampton & Brown (BHB) to draft an amendment to the plan to include a final design of the Willow Park Trail System. The amendment approved Tuesday includes a current, realistic, and implementable trail plan and map, officially validating the trail project, officials noted.

BHB Senior Design Engineer Larry Colvin made the presentation. He is also president of the Weatherford Mountain Bike Club, a 501c(3) nonprofit, which helped produce the plan.

“I’m really excited for this night to happen,” Colvin told the council. “They can actually plan a development around this trails plan.”

The goals of the amendment are to:

*Identify areas on public and private lands that are suitable for trail development within the city limits and extra-territorial jurisdiction of Willow Park. …

TRI-COUNTY — The Texas Department of Transportation, El Paso District, will be accepting public comments until this Friday, October 13, on two proposed stretches of bike lanes alongside highways in Presidio and Brewster counties. If all goes according to plan, the projects are slated to begin construction in March of 2024.

One of the proposed sets of bike lanes would span U.S. 67/90 between Marfa, where 67 intersects with State Highway 17, and the Brewster County line, according to presentation materials provided by TxDOT.

That project will consist of 6-inch dedicated bike lanes on both sides of the road within Marfa, until about South Spring Street, according to TxDOT spokesperson Lauren Macias-Cervantes. …

I unexpectedly had today off work, so of course I wanted to ride ???? ????????. Finding someone to ride with in the drizzly conditions proved exceedingly difficult. However, I am very thankful that I was able to connect with Bob Cornes who agreed to ride with me. I knew that trying to stay on his wheel would be exceedingly difficult! I drove to Bob’s house??, and we left from there. We were able to see some areas of towns like New Braunfels that I haven’t seen since childhood. As always, I am most thankful to my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, for saving my life both spiritually, and physically enabling me to return to this sport that I love, and for yet another safe ride with a great friend ??? and no mechanicals or flats.?

Absolutely had to get this picture of Bob as he rode past the famous Gruene Hall!

Marfa100 bike race to coincide with eclipse, benefit Marfa Public Library

By Mary Cantrell | bigbendsentinel.com

MARFA — FM 2810 will surge with hundreds of cyclists this Saturday as the 13th annual Marfa100 bike race commences.

By happenstance, this year the 60-mile trek will sync up with a celestial occurrence — an annular solar eclipse, which will be visible in the Marfa area from 9:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., peaking at 10:45 a.m. during the race.

“We paid a lot of money to get that eclipse lined up with the powers that be,” said Marfa100 organizer Zeke Raney.

Fellow organizer Elizabeth Farrell brushed up on the specifics of the eclipse by taking a free class with the McDonald Observatory. Marfa100 riders will …

Day 19 – Las Cruces, NM to El Paso, TX: TEXAS!!!

Wednesday October 11, 2023, 44 miles (71 km) – Total so far: 1,013 miles (1,630 km) A good night at the KOA. That was probably one of the nicest KOA’s I’ve ever seen. The bathrooms were really nice and clean and they had a nice community kitchen right next to the tent camping. It was nice.

I have included a picture of our dish washing system. I guess this is Adventure Cycling’s method. When we get done with a meal, everyone washes there own plates, utensils, etc. There is a wash bucket that is usually boiling water right off the stove that nearly burns your hands that you wash in, then a bucket of lukewarm water to rinse in, then cold water that a lid full of bleach has been put in to sanitize your stuff in. Actually, it’s pretty smart to …

Zwift – Cycle Nation Joburg Sundowner (D) on Watopia Triple Flat Loops

Texbiker.net Posted on October 11, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 11, 2023

Light rain and mid 60’s awaited me if I decided to ride outdoors today. I turned that offer down and renewed my Zwift subscription. Looking over the upcoming events the Cycle Nation Joburg Sundowner started at 11:02 AM for Group D. The vent rode the Watopia Triple Flat Loops for 75 minutes. The last time I rode a Zwift event was early spring and several updates during that time changed a few things. The companion app buttons changed and the desktop program looked different but I found my away around. The Blue NorCross AL is my dedicated Zwift bike connected to a Wahoo Kickr Core. My plan was to ride about 23 miles but I fell short of that at 20.88 miles. Looking at my previous rides on the Watopia Triple flat Loops course today’s ride was slower and shorter. I should’ve pedaled harder.

The other Zwifters were fast and left me in the dust after about half a mile. I passed another person but that was it.

Bike parking gets support in Urban Transportation Commission’s call to end parking requirements

by Chad Swiatecki | www.austinmonitor.com

City Council may add changes to bike parking requirements to a November resolution that will finalize the removal of parking minimums from the Land Development Code.

The Urban Transportation Commission recently voted to recommend Council adopt the ordinance changes on parking minimums called for in a May resolution, while also in most cases requiring bicycle parking spaces be provided at a mix of 10 percent of the number of parking spaces included in new building projects.

The Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the ordinance language at tonight’s meeting, with Council’s Nov. 2 meeting as the likely date for possible final approval.

Dan Hennessey, project manager for the city’s transportation department, began the meeting detailing where the …

It’s Tuesday so the bike ride must go south and east! And that I did.

Texbiker.net Posted on October 10, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 10, 2023

It’s Tuesday so the bike ride must go south and east! And that I did, riding my Cervelo Caledonia on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route leaving at 10:30 AM and finishing at 1:13 PM. During the ride I experienced an overcast sky, light wind, noisy traffic, a man waving in Walden, and sprinkles near the end. The 36.16 miles didn’t gain any on 2022 YTD miles but lost 3 miles keeping me close at 92 miles behind. I was the only cyclist out biking as far as I know. Before the ride I aired the tires up to 80 psi for a firm ride and no flats were encountered. After getting dressed and walking outside to apply some sunscreen I thought maybe my long sleeve jersey was too heavy but as I rode with an overcast sky and the breeze my choice was okay. Weather: Start 76 degrees, humidity 73%, dew point 66.4, overcast, wind S 4 mph; Finish 78 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 66.8, overcast, wind S 5 mph.
