About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Boomtown Bike Ride and Burkburnett’s Friendship Festival a success

by: Ariel Reed | www.texomashomepage.com

BURKBURNETT, TX. (KFDX/KJTL) — Burkies were up and moving today with lots of exciting things going on in the city.

Starting off the morning, the Boomtown Blowout Bike Ride had racers competing in 5, 15, 25 or 50-mile rides throughout town and surrounding areas. The event also hosted a community-wide paint-by-numbers mural.

Part of the registration fee from those events went back into the community via The Bright Stars Chamber Scholarships which is given annually to Burkburnett graduates. Not too long after the ride commenced Burkburnett’s friendship festival kicked off allowing local vendors and businesses to set up for a shopping extravaganza. …

Long Sleeve Jersey, Strong Wind, Fall Arrived

Texbiker.net Posted on October 7, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 7, 2023

Just like the weather forecast said it was “chilly” this morning when I got up. By that I mean 65 degrees. As I waited for the temperature to go up a few degrees I ate breakfast and watched the Il Lombardia bike race from Italy. It looked to be warmer there. After the race ended I started getting ready for today’s bike ride. With the “chilly” weather I was going to wear a long sleeve jersey for the first time since spring as far as I can remember. No ant problem to delay me this morning as I wheeled the Cervelo Caledonia bike out of the back door. I hit the Bolt computer start button at 10:27 AM and the ride began. The wind chilled my legs as the long sleeve jersey and short sleeve jersey kept my upper body reasonably warm. It took about 15 minutes of riding for my legs to forget about the coolness and get about their business. The wind was out of the north at 14 mph with 24 mph gusts. This would later be a problem biking east over Lake Houston on FM 1960. I needed to make up some of the lost miles from the rain so I chose the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman route thinking it would be around 37 miles. It turned out to be 39.96 miles today versus the typical Saturday rides’ 33 miles. For the route this was the average distance for the 2 previous rides on this route in 2023. Month to date I’ve biked 150.3 miles, or 21% of my 700 mile goal for October. I’m a little behind the pace to get there. By the time I finished at 1:37 PM the temperature warmed up to 73 degrees and the wind slowed to 12 mph with 18 mph gusts. I didn’t really notice the difference in the wind.

Zander Lingelbach-Pierce | www.bikemag.com

When else can you bike under the eye of Sauron? Annular eclipses are a very rare phenomenon. This type of eclipse happens when the moon completely passes in front of the sun. On October 14, 2023, there will be one such eclipse in North America.

For any riders who double as eclipse enthusiasts, Spider Mountain Bike Park in Texas will be hosting an eclipse viewing and biking party at their Oktoberfest this year. …

Back Riding After Thursday Rain Out Making Up Miles

Texbiker.net Posted on October 6, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 6, 2023

Thursday’s rain moved away leaving a great day to ride on Friday. It was cool this morning when I woke up, 66 degrees, but once the sun came up it got warmer. I tried to start before 10 AM but as I was filling my water bottle I saw ants moving on the countertop. I thought I found the mounds yesterday and sprayed but maybe I missed someplace. Spraying and chasing them slowed me up. I rolled out on my Canyon Endurace with the DT Swiss and Schwalbe 700x35mm tires at 10:31 AM. Riding through several Kingwood Villages I made my way to Woodridge Forest and US59. The route choice today was Community Drive – Cumberland Blvd – Oakhurst or Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd. I would decide when I got to Cumberland Blvd. I wasn’t sure what would impact the decision when I got there. As it turned out at Cumberland Blvd. I continued riding NW to Gene Campbell Blvd. because the weather was great and I needed the extra miles to make up for the rain outs on Tuesday and Thursday. The NE wind was challenging on the way to TX 99 where I made the turn to Loop 494 changing the direction to west and then south for Valley Ranch. I wasn’t sure how the wind would affect biking NW on FM 1314 but it most of the way it came from my right rear quarter. With that I thought making the return to Old Sorters Road would put the wind at my left front quarter and require extra effort. The wind wasn’t as strong as I expected thanks to passing traffic and the trees on the other side of FM 1314. I built up my overall average speed to 14.0 mph and held it until I got to Kings Manor. I finished at 1:37 PM going 39.67 miles.
