About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Also known as the Bill Weinlein Memorial Championship Races, the annual two-day cycling competition is held in memory of cyclist and long-time official Bill Weinlein, who succumbed to melanoma this year.

Hollinger took the opportunity to remind riders to be aware of the dangers of prolonged sun exposure and heat exertion and …

By Kevin Curtin | www.austinchronicle.com

(l-r) Kelly Wourms and Claire Harbutt founded Austin Bicycle Meals (Photos by Jana Birchum)

When it’s in the hundreds outside, a Popsicle can change your day.

It’s a Saturday in early September, the last blast of summer, and a procession of bicycles rolls by a grassy median in Downtown Austin where a dozen folks are posted up in the shade of an oak. A woman of about 30, stylish and sweaty, clearly experiencing some degree of hardship, is walking toward the group venting loudly to no one in particular.

“I’m. STRESSED.”

A man on a bike asks if anyone wants food and the cyclists all stop to hand out takeout boxes of rice with stir-fried vegetables and fruit cobbler, bottles of water, and Popsicles. There’s no introduction, …

Public invited to in-person/virtual meeting on FM 1187 project

www.weatherforddemocrat.com

TARRANT COUNTY – The public is invited to attend a virtual public meeting with an in-person option for a proposed project on FM 1187 from the Parker County line (Bella Flora Drive) to Chisholm Trail Parkway in Tarrant County.

The in-person option will be an open-house format with no formal presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at the Benbrook High School located at 201 Overcrest Dr., Benbrook.

The virtual meeting will be available beginning Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 8 a.m. here (www.txdot.gov, Keyword: FM 1187 West Tarrant). A pre-recorded video, project information, and project maps will be available at both options.

Galveston Beach Access 32 to Seawall Pleasure Pier And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2023

I drove to Galveston for today’s bike ride. Going south on I-45 I went through several places with wet roads and wondered if that would be waiting for me on the island. Exiting I-45 at 61st Street the traffic was light as I made my way to Seawall Blvd. The ride would start at Beach Access 32 on the west end of the island. FM 3005 took me there where I parked the Jeep and unloaded all my gear. From Beach Access 32 the ride went NE on FM 3005 to Stewart Road where I turned left. Stewart Road doesn’t have as much traffic as FM 3005 and avoids the tiny shoulder on FM 3005 east of Jamaica Beach and the Galveston Island State Park entrance. Construction on the power lines beside Stewart Road reduced the road to single lanes. The flagmen signaled me through the work zones nicely. Passed the work areas at 14.2 miles Stewart Road added a bike lane and concrete instead of asphalt. At 81st Street I rode to the Seawall and rode on it to just past the Pleasure Pier where I turned around for the ride back. All of the way to that point had been into a headwind (21 miles) and I looked forward to the tailwind on the way back to Beach Access 32. In Jamaica Beach I stopped at the Circle K store for cold Gatorade because my CamelBak water was warm. Sitting in the shade I rested while drinking it. Back on the Cervelo it was a little over 6 miles to where I parked the Jeep. I started at 11:14 AM and finished at 2:56 PM. The tailwind on the way back was delightful as I increased my overall average speed to 13.0 mph. After the ride I drove back to Seawall Blvd. for dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack. I left Galveston after 5 PM hoping the traffic would thin out by the time I got near Houston.

On the brink of collapse, BCycle bike sharing system gets $500K boost from Houston

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Houston’s floundering bike sharing system has a little more life, after city officials approved $500,000 to keep the system operational, at least until a new system for checking out bicycles is in place.

“There are a lot of people who use the service and we don’t want them to lose the service,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said.

City Council approved the money Wednesday from Houston’s general fund, aimed at giving the nonprofit Houston Bike Share a few more months of funding to keep roughly 60 kiosks and the bikes held there operational. Houston’s planning department will work with the nonprofit to decide how the money will be spent and formalize an agreement with the nonprofit. …

Local spends summer riding to raise awareness, money for cancer cure

www.fredericksburgstandard.com

Elena Walch (in biking shorts) was met by family in Anchorage, Alaska, after finishing the Texas4000, a 70-day cancer charity trek from Austin to Anchorage. From left, Theresa, Becky, Elena, Dot, Joe, Bob, Anthony and Stacey Walch. — Submitted photo

The ups and downs of Elena Walch’s 70-day charity bike ride across seven U.S. states and four Canadian territories seemed to mirror the emotional turmoil that cancer inflicts upon families all over the world.

In addition to the punishing her body received bicycling 5,890 miles on the road this past summer, Walch weathered a weeklong crying jag, numbing cold, torrential rain, painful falls and bouts of hysterical laughter. She was also the recipient of random acts of kindness and charity from strangers.

The 2019 Fredericksburg High School graduate was part of a group of 46 University of Texas-Austin students selected to participate in the Texas4000, which is the longest annual charity bike ride in the world, according to its spokesperson. The team raised nearly $500,000 riding for cancer research, Walch said.

“I had a crying streak that started at Pike’s Peak in Colorado and ended in Logan, Utah,” laughed Walch, who now works in …

North To Woodbranch, Checked Bridge And Tavola West Progress

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2023

I rode north on today’s bike ride aboard my Canyon Endurace bike. The route was one I rode September 18th but one I’ve only biked 4 previous times not counting today, Porter – Woodbranch – Valley Ranch. Today was not exactly the same as September 18th though. I explored two places and rode through Lilliput Farms instead of Railroad Ave. back to Roman Forest Blvd. I looked closer at the north Loop 494 approach to the Caney Creek bridge and went through Tavola West to see 5 houses under construction. More about those in the video. Wheels down at 9:45 AM, later than I should’ve started. The temperature was 83 degrees and the humidity had time to decrease to 75%, not the 96% at the start of yesterday’s ride. When I finished at 12:59 PM today my arm sleeves had heavy salt stains but the temperature was 88 degrees, much cooler than earlier in September. Wind was light at 5 mph, not taxing my legs too much. riding 39.33 miles put me over 800 miles for the month.
