About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Emma McSpadden and Chelsea Collinsworth | www.kcbd.com

The report stated a pick-up truck was also heading east in the outside lane. Hurd reportedly veered into the same lane and was struck by the vehicle. He died from his injuries at the scene of the crash.

Unexpectedly Passed By Another Cyclist On Loop 494

Texbiker.net Posted on September 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 22, 2023

I selected a route I’ve only rode twice before for today’s bike ride. I wanted variety plus the last time I rode it the distance came in at 38.23 miles which could put me very close to 200 miles for the week. The streets are not new to me but the combination of them results in this route, Community Drive – Cumberland – Forest Cove. In Porter I took FM 1314 east to Loop 494 which I don’t ride very often. Unexpectedly another cyclist passed me around Keith Drive. I can’t remember that happening before. Returning to Kingwood via Hamblen Road and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway was the other difference from the similar Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route. The ride began at 9:29 AM when I rode off on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and ended at 12:42 PM. It warmed up by the time I finished and the wind got stronger too. Weather for the bike ride: Start 84 degrees, 79% humidity, dew point 76.8, partly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph; Finish90 degrees, 65% humidity, dew point 76.3, partly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 20 mph. When I stopped at the Oakhurst pool and park sitting in the shade with the wind blowing through the trees it felt cooling. The quiet and cooling made it hard to get back on the Cervelo.

Juan Betancourt | dentonrc.com

Residents and supporters from northeast Denton hosted a bike rally Saturday, Sept. 16, to protest further development of the neighborhood.

Northeast Denton residents again protest development, as city cancels next joint meeting with Planning & Zoning

By Christian McPhate | dentonrc.com

“How many of us will it take for you to listen?” was the underlying question that northeast Denton supporters were asking council members Tuesday night at the City Council meeting. It was a question they reiterated even after the public comment period in the hallway of council chambers.

A month ago, more than 80 residents and supporters made the council chamber standing room only.

Dozens returned Tuesday night in red shirts that read “Save Northeast Denton.” They had planned to gather again shortly before the meeting on the northeast corner of the Courthouse-on-the-Square for …

The fate of bike sharing (Sept. 21, 2023)

Michael Hagerty | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

On Thursday’s show: Houston BCycle, the city’s bike share system, recently announced it was shutting down. But will that still happen now that the mayor says he will ask City Council to approve funding to save it?

On Thursday’s show: The nonprofit that runs Houston BCycle, the city’s only bike share system, announced last week the program would be shutting down due to multiple issues. But that might not be the case now after Mayor Sylvester Turner said he will ask City Council to approve funding to save it. …

Metro board to vote on $10.5 million bike share system contract next week

Sarah Grunau | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The news comes a day after Houston mayor Sylvester Turner recommended a $500,000 dedication to keep BCycle afloat.

A Metropolitan Transit Authority committee Thursday introduced a $10.5 million plan for a bike share system, just days after BCycle announced it would shut down operations because of high operational costs.

The Metro board of directors will vote next week on authorizing the Metro president and CEO to sign a five-year contract with PBSC Urban Solutions to launch and operate a bike share system, which could bring around 140 e-bikes for rent to the Houston area.

The potential system could also include 140 e-bikes, 20 grid-connected charging …

Metro mulling 20 stations, 140 e-bikes as start of its own shared cycling system

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

A new set of shared bikes could be poised for Houston sidewalks, as Metro officials consider a $10.6 million integration of as-needed cycling into the transit system, starting with 20 stations in early 2024.

The proposal, scheduled for approval next Thursday by the Metropolitan Transit Authority board, would approve a three-year deal with PBSC Urban Solutions, with two annual extensions.

The aim is to use cycling either to connect to places within biking distance or …

Best Hidden Bike Trail Santa Fe Trestle Trail

Yeah, OK, obviously those who know about this place probably want to gate-keep, but it’s not like it’s that big of a secret, so calm down. This pretty little trail is a nice break from the Katy Trail, which is always super packed with people who are a little too much in shape. The trestle trail goes from The Cedars to Moore Park, so it is pretty short, but there are really beautiful views of the Trinity River and the surrounding area. Drop your preconceived notions about the Dallas portion of the river … but do not get in the water. The trail is peaceful, a nice slice of nature in an otherwise desolate industrial area. Chances are you probably don’t get over to the area much, so why not try something new?

Amputee athlete rides 100 miles Saturday in the Texas Tumbleweed 100

John Key | www.moorenews.com

“Where there is a will there is a way,” said Aaron Smith, who had just completed riding a bicycle 100 miles on a course around Moore County to Lake Meredith and back Saturday afternoon for the Texas Tumbleweed 100 bicycle ride/race, the annual event put on by the Moore County YMCA as a fundraiser. Smith was competing for cash prizes with more than 20 other riders who had opted to take up the challenge of the longest of five courses. Smith did not win any money, but he was happy. He completed the course under his own power, and he was the only competitor having to pedal with a prosthetic leg.

“It was an awesome race,” he said Saturday as he cooled down. He only made one rest stop along the way. He said he was trying to complete the course as quickly as he could. He was tempted, however, but not because of fatigue. “It was really beautiful,” he said, especially at the lake. “The terrain is so different from what I am used to.” Smith, from Gainesville, Texas, said he was fascinated by the cactus plants, mesquite trees, antelope, and buffalo that he passed as he pedaled up and down hills through the countryside. He said he saw some buffalo standing “right next to the fence” and wanted to get off and go have a closer look, but at the last minute he decided not to take the time. Smith said he had been in the Texas Panhandle before — he has distant relatives in Dalhart — but not since he was a child.

Revisited Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on September 21, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 21, 2023

Another bike ride on a route I haven’t been on for almost a month. I guess it hasn’t come up in my mind to ride it sooner. Today’s bike ride went south on the Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman route. The route route goes south before turning east to go over Lake Houston and circle Huffman. Starting at 9:26 AM pedaling my Canyon Endurace bike I changed the route to avoid the traffic at Kingwood Park High School due to their later start time on Thursday. This added a little more distance compared to the 36.6 average distance for the previous 5 rides in 2023 as I rode 37.20 miles today. The week totals 161.57 miles, a good position to hit 200+ miles and make up for falling short of 200 miles last week. My legs felt good today powering along the ride. I aired the tires up to 80 psi before the ride and the Canyon seemed to roll easier. Hot weather was back for another shot but the wind wasn’t gusting like yesterday. Weather for my bike ride: Start 84 degrees, 79% humidity, dew point 76.6, a few clouds, wind E 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 62% humidity, dew point 76.8, partly cloudy, wind E 8 mph. I finished at 12:30 PM.
