Trail enthusiasts concerned about safety with new connecting bridge over Central Expy

DALLAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) – There’s a lot of attention in north Dallas about a new pedestrian bridge over Central Expressway.
It connects a couple of city trails, but not everything on the trail lines is a walk in the park.
They are the arteries of a city’s central service system.
“It’s pretty much serene, quiet, peaceful,” said Terrence Sauls, who traverses the trail of White Rock Creek in northeast Dallas by foot daily.
A network of city paths for cyclists, joggers, and even nature enthusiasts continues to expand, including the addition of a bridge now in place over Central Expressway.

A new pedestrian bridge over U.S. Highway 75 in North Dallas will soon connect three busy trails.
The Northaven Trail Bridge has been in the works since 2021 as part of a larger effort by the City of Dallas and regional partners to build on pedestrian trail infrastructure in North Texas.
The $9.3 million bridge was placed during a 20-hour closure on U.S. Highway U.S. 75 over the weekend.

Video: Woman donates bike to stranger she sees walking to work every day

Heath Nelson’s bike – his only form of transportation – broke down. He walked around seven miles to and from work each day.
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Rebecca Wendt donated a bike to Heath Nelson Tuesday after learning he was walking nearly two hours to and from his job each day.
Nelson would ride his bike to work, but after the bike – his main way to get around town – broke down, he made his journey on foot.
“I try to do what I can to pay my bills,” Nelson, 52, said.
Wendt said she’d seen him walking on the side of the road as she drove, and felt called to find out who he was. After getting his contact information from his job, she reached out to Nelson and learned his story.
“It was just like God bopped me over the head and said, ‘Find out where that man lives and what his needs are,” Wendt said. …

Several factors make bike travel in San Antonio perilous. Many bad habits will need to be overcome, and many good habits will need to develop before we can compare with Amsterdam or Frankfurt, Germany, as a “bike-friendly” metropolis.
