About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Kept The 200+ Mile Week String Alive, But Stretched Rides Two Days In A Row To Do It

Texbiker.net Posted on September 2, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 2, 2023

My goal for today’s bike ride was 34 miles to reach 200+ miles for the week. To do that I rode my Canyon Endurace on the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route but added about 3 miles to the typical ride of 34 miles. Those 3 extra miles boosted my week’s total to 203.64 miles. Not too much over but enough for the 12th week in a row over 200 miles. If it isn’t too hot after church tomorrow I will ride to add more miles.

I started a little later than I wanted because I watched part of the women’s race Classic Lorient from France while eating breakfast. Maybe I ate slower than I should’ve. I rode away at 8:14 AM with the temperature in the mid 70’s, unusual lately for it to be below 80. On Saturdays I look forward to possibly seeing other cyclists but wondered if starting 30 minutes later I would miss. Not to worry. I think I saw as many as usual, maybe a few more. The first big group caught my eye as I turned left onto FM 1960 from Atascocita Shores Drive. Then on Fairlake Lane and Old Atascocita Road more passed. Most of them are in the video.

Weather: Start 75 degrees, 83% humidity, dew point 69.8, partly cloudy, wind N 5 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 52% humidity, dew point 71.5, a few clouds, wind NE 7 mph.

My legs felt good and the light wind didn’t present too much headwind challenges. My AXS.SRAM.com ride report reflects that with 25 rear derailleur shifts, 1:47:49 in the 35×13 gears (24.9 miles) out of a total moving time of 2:51:17. It was a great day to ride my bike. Praise the Lord.

Integrity Leadership Academy event benefits Faith Family Academy students

www.waxahachiesun.com

Integrity Leadership Academy recently presented 28 bikes to students from Faith Family Academy, a charter school offering education at no cost to families in Dallas and Waxahachie.

Participants in the Integrity Leadership Academy completed a surprise team-building activity, culminating in a bike-building event where each team assembled a kid’s bicycle. Once the bikes were completed, children from Faith Family Academy and their families were brought into the room to be gifted one of the brand-new bikes as a surprise to the 125 Integrity employees. Integrity also provided each student’s family with a $100 Chick-fil-A gift card.

“This very special charity bike-building event is just one component of the Integrity Leadership Academy, a leadership education, development, and training program designed to help 500 Integrity leaders maximize their …

Kalaba brothers, MSU Cycling team victorious throughout 42nd Hotter N’ Hell Hundred

Andy Newberry | news.msutexas.edu

The 42nd Annual Hotter N’ Hell Hundred bicycling race was a winning weekend for the MSU Cycling team as Pavle Kalaba, Jadiel Moreno, Mauri Maldonado, and Dušan Kalaba all won events.

The expectations are high for MSU Cycling this season after winning nationals in the criterium last spring at the Collegiate Road Cycling Nationals. With many veterans returning and some new talent, the dominance at the HHH will do nothing but add confidence and enthusiasm.

“I think it was a good weekend overall, and …

New Month, New Goal. Making Up Some Lost Miles For The Week

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 1, 2023

A new month and a new goal of 750 road miles. Last month I exceeded my 800 mile goal with 964.3 miles. Hopefully September will have similar results. To make this a 200+ mile week I needed 72 miles before today’s bike ride. I came up short when Monday’s ride was 21 miles instead of the typical 34 to 35 miles due to GoPro technical difficulties. Today I rode north to Tavola on a route (New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch) that averages about 37 miles over the 9 previous rides in 2023. On the way back I added a few extra streets increasing the miles to 38.57 and help tomorrow’s bike ride push me over the 200+ mark for the week. Now I need 34 more mile to cross over the line. I can do it!

Looking at the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I spent the vast majority of the ride using the 35×13 gears for 2:03:38 (29.2 miles) out a toal moving time of 2:50:52. This took 25 rear derailleur shifts.

When I stopped at the 7 Eleven st FM 1314 a lady was entering the store with me and we talked about how the weather eased up the last few days compared to earlier. The temperature today may approach 100 again but during my bike ride the humidity and dew point were low giving a cooler feeling than last week. I think this energized the bike ride some plus the light wind didn’t challenge me too much. Weather conditions: Start 83 degrees, 50% humidity, dew point 62.3, a few clouds, wind NE 5 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 38% humidity, dew point 64.2, fair, wind E 5 mph.
