About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said when EMS crews arrived, they found a man down on the right shoulder with a bicycle.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating and asking any witnesses to come forward with any information.

Another hit and run fatality. The complete disregard for a human life by car drivers is impossible to comprehend. https://t.co/GHy3ZX7zXX

Triple H wraps up with Criterium Races

by: Ariel Reed | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Downtown Wichita Falls served as the concourse for the finale of the 42nd Hotter ‘N Hell: ending the weekend with several criterium races.

These races are different from the traditional ones, race director Pablo Cruz explained these races are self-paced competitions. “It’s a race based on time, and it’s usually in a short circuit that runs around a mile, a mile and a half long,” said Pablo Cruz. “Laps are superfast. They take about one and a half minutes. So it’s pretty fast.”

Additionally, points are won for …

Houston’s Group Bike Rides Are the Ultimate Form of Protest

By Daniel Renfrow | www.houstoniamag.com

There’s something heart-warming about the anarchy of 2,000 people on bikes reclaiming the roads back from cars.

Like many, I picked up cycling during the early months of the pandemic. At first, it was simply a way to forget, at least for an hour or so, that the world outside seemed to be collapsing—a collapse that was starting to feel incredibly boring when watched from the relative safety of my hermetically sealed home. Those first months of cycling, my long-unexercised legs would turn to Jell-O around the five-mile mark, and I would defeatedly slow-pedal my way back home. After a while, though, I built up more stamina, and my weekly bike rides turned into daily occurrences, my distance increasing with each ride. By the time a year rolled around, I had ridden 1,500 miles in the Houston area—about the same distance as between Houston and Los Angeles.

Around the one-year mark, I also started going on group bike rides, which were …

Video Recovery, Traffic Pattern Change, August “Cool” Front

Texbiker.net Posted on August 29, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 29, 2023

Today’s bike ride skipped the camera drama from yesterday. Best buy had the GoPro Hero9 on sale and retired the Drift Ghost XL from video duties going forward. It will be my backup camera once the Hero 10 replacement arrives though looking at today’s video it is hard to tell the difference.

The start time was much earlier today with me rolling our at 9:10 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike. Heading south and east on my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route felt good. A “cool” front passed through earlier in the morning with the wind out of the NE at 8 mph. The temperature was not changed a lot but the humidity and dew point decreased by the time I finished at 12:03 PM. I could feel a little coolness even though the temperature was in the low 90’s. Riding east over Lake Houston into a stiff headwind was hard but the return was much easier thanks to a semi tailwind. Weather overall: Start 83 degrees, 68% humidity, dew point 71.2, partly cloudy, wind NE 8 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 46% humidity, dew point 68.3, a few clouds, wind NE 13 mph.

Traffic patterns changed at the FM 1960 construction zone between Pinehurst Trail Drive and Atascocita shores Drive to the east. No problem crossing over on Pinehurst Trail. Turning right from Atascocita Shores Drive onto FM 1960 to go over the lake the traffic was moved to the left with orange barrels giving space to ride separate from the traffic until the concrete barriers on my right ended and then moving on the shoulder. On the way back traffic was moved left and the area behind orange barrels on the right was gone but traffic was light from where the shoulder ended to the right turn onto Atascocita Shores.

The 35.91 miles today moved my August total to 894.3 and with two days left I should get over 900 miles.

LETTERS: Cyclist safety, Democrats draw attack

Cyclist safety

Bicycle, pedestrian and road safety awareness are in the thoughts of RGV residents right now. The recent road accidents and inexcusable and preventable deaths of friends and neighbors are scars to the community.

I would like to commend the community leaders who continually organize the Critical Mass Bicycle Ride in McAllen. I had the pleasure of riding with them on the last Friday of July along with up to 50 other riders including families, children and grandparents. The work of the organizers helped build confidence for people to ride on the road and …

Biking to Campus

Freedom from stress, traffic and finding a place to park every morning drove Leah McCurdy to go from four wheels to two. The byproduct of her new commute has even resulted in a few unexpected benefits such as improvements to her health and fitness.

Each morning, Leah dons her helmet to make the 1.3-mile trip on her Schwinn from her home to UTA Libraries, where she serves as director of Open Partnerships and Services.

GoPro Died, Drift Ghost XL Stepped In, Kinda. I See The Past Clearly.

Texbiker.net Posted on August 28, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 28, 2023

Back from the Hotter N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls yesterday after creating a video my GoPro Hero 10 rear screen died making the camera unusable. I called GoPro this morning. The rep was friendly as we talked about the options. My camera was beyond the 1 year warranty but GoPro offered to replace it free as a one time courtesy. That is great but it will take about 3 weeks to receive the replacement after they receive my camera. I have a Drift Ghost XL camera that could serve during that time but it is not the same as my GoPro as you will quickly notice in the video. The audio is loud and not good but understandable. The video is like riding a wave because there is no image stabilization so if you watch be prepared.

One small new bike accessory was along for the ride. At the HH100 expo I bought a Clearview Micro mirror. I like it because it doesn’t stick out as far ahead of my helmet as the Monkey Mirror I’ve used for a number of years. It was easy to install and the rearview was clear once found the best spot to attach it to my Poc helmet. You can see it in the video.

With all of that and getting the Ghost XL camera setup I didn’t start the bike ride until 10:42 AM. During the ride I dropped the GoPro off for UPS Ground to pickup. I decided to ride the Kingwood streets and trails as I got familiar with the Ghost XL camera again. I thought the ride would be around 15 miles but it ended up at 21.88 miles. That’s about 10 miles less than I planned before the GoPro problem came up. Not too bad. Mounting the Ghost XL using the mount for the GoPro required some changes and creativity to put the Rode Wireless ME mic on the camera since it didn’t have the cold shoe like the GoPro Media Mod does but 3M Command Strip solved that.

Thankfully the temperature had not reached the 90’s with the late start. The wind was light and provided some cooling effect. The lack of rain was evident on the trails with brown leaves and brush everywhere. I finished at 12:31 as the temperature hit 90 degrees. Weather: Start 88 degrees, 62% humidity, dew point 73.2, partly cloudy, wind E 6 mph; Finish 90 degrees, 55% humidity, dew point 71.3, partly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph.
