About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Donut Ride, Pleasant Weather Faded Away

Texbiker.net Posted on August 17, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 17, 2023

The lower humidity and dew point faded away this morning as I began today’s bike ride. Thursday’s ride headed south and east over Lake Houston to FM 2100 on my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. I wanted to start earlier than yesterday but only managed 3 minutes improvement rolling away on the Cervelo Caledonia at 8:55 AM. This was the thirteen bike ride on the route in 2023. Today’s 34.94 miles was about average this year. That upped my week to 150 miles and the month to 549 or 69% of the way to my 800 mile goal. No cyclists crossed my route today. Traffic backed up around Kingwood Park High School because students arrived later than other days this week. Maybe Thursday is a late start day? No donut stop but I stopped at the Exxon station at E. Lake Houston Parkway for ice. In the video I made an effort to talk to the GoPro media mod back mic and I think the audio is better today. I changed the out front mount that holds the GoPro to increase the space between the GoPro and the handle bar for a wireless mic if I decide to get one. I finished at 11:43 AM. According to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 35×13 gears the most: 1:37:33 or 23.3 miles.

Weather for the bike ride: 86 degrees, 71% humidity, dew point 75.1, fair, wind S 5 mph; Finish 95 degrees, 45% humidity, dew point 70.1, a few clouds, wind W 6 mph.

Dual Bonus Bike Ride to Caney Creek And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on August 16, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 16, 2023

A dual bonus on today’s bike ride. A “cool” front arrived overnight lowering the humidity and dew point. When I went outside to stat the bike ride at 8:58 AM it felt dry and comfortable, not the wet steamy air we’ve had for weeks. The second part of the bonus, a tailwind from Caney Creek back to Kingwood rather than a headwind. The low humidity and dew point won’t last long though. I didn’t use my CamelBak for hydration, a water bottle was sufficient with a stop at the 7 Eleven at FM 1314 for ice and water. The “dry” feel left my black arm sleeves with plenty of salt stains. I rode the Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route but added several streets to increase the distance to 35.15 miles, the most of any ride on this route in 2023. Today was the thirteen bike ride on the route and the typical distance is 33 miles or less. This increased the week to 115 miles and August to 514 miles or 64% of my goal. Weather overview: Start 83 degrees, 52% humidity, dew point 63.8, a few clouds, wind E 7 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 34% humidity, dew point 59.6, a few clouds, wind E 12 mph gusts 16 mph. I finished at 11:45 AM. The forecast called for 100+ today but it will be a “dry” hot.
