About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ride Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive Enough To Memorize The Nails

Texbiker.net Posted on August 15, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 15, 2023

A slight hint of a weather adjustment when I started today’s bike ride at 8:58 AM. the humidity was about 20% lower than yesterday’s ride at 64% and the dew point was a couple of degrees lower too. It didn’t feel like I was riding in a wet blanket for awhile. The temperature forecast didn’t change though, still 100+ by the afternoon. According to Space City Weather this will only last about 36 hours and then back to higher humidity and hot. Weather for the bike ride: Start 85 degrees, 64% humidity, dew point 71.8, a few clouds, wind NW 6 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 51% humidity, dew point 73.4, a few clouds, wind N 7 mph. I finished at 11:55 AM avoiding the 100+ part of the day. After the ride I watched the Vuelta a Burgos from Spain where the terrain looked like the drought dried land here.

I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike on the route I ride most often in 2023, Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive. SportTracks shows this was the 19th bike ride to Spanish Cove Drive. I saw several cyclists during the bike ride but no groups. I like this route because of the mixture of main streets, side streets, and rural roads. The start is easy and I memorized all of the bumps and potholes, even where the nails are at. A number of my routes sprout from this one.

A visit to Donald’s Donuts fueled me for the last 10 miles. The blueberry cake donut hit the spot and the few minutes in cool air refreshed me too.

I experimented with an external mic on the GoPro camera and it was not very good. Please excuse the poor audio in the video. I will use the GoPro Media Mod mic in the future.

DRIVER OPEN FIRES ON BICYCLIST IN ROAD RAGE INCIDENT

By Scott Engle | montgomerycountypolicereporter.com

Last Thursday, Shenandoah Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Ed English Dr in reference to a road rage incident. Reports indicate that a suspect identified as Roddrick Deshun Perry, 35, of 100 Baretta in Conroe resorted to violence, discharging a firearm at a bicyclist following a verbal altercation. Thankfully, no injuries were sustained. The Perry fled the scene before police arrived. Vigilant patrol officers were able to locate a spent shell casing from a firearm on the road. Shenandoah’s Detective Division and patrol staff come together seamlessly to investigate this shooting. Through diligent police work, sufficient evidence was obtained, and Perry was located and taken into custody approximately two hours after the initial call. He was formally charged with one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. His bond was set at $2500.

New safety features at Harlingen bike trails

by: Brian R Svendsen | www.valleycentral.com

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Harlingen is adding a new safety feature to its mountain bike trail, which is made up of five sections and covers almost ten miles along the Arroyo Colorado.

Some riders have gotten injured, and first responders have a hard time finding them.

“If you’re on a trail, describing what’s around you, you know. I’m next to a mesquite tree, next to a cactus, it’s pretty ineffective for first responders,” said master trail builder Tom Kimbriel.

Harlingen’s Parks and Recreation Department will soon start putting markers on the trails.

Each numbered marker will …

It seems like yesterday but was long ago

Brent Wells | strava.com

Well, I decided to try something a little bit different tonight. I still wanted to ride at least 30 miles, but instead of “speaking Spanish backwards” or doing Tower Rd in reverse, I thought I would just take Waring Welfare Rd all the way to Waring, and then backtrack and make the loop on Blaschke that way. I did get the mileage, and surprised myself at the speed. Since my average was 18.9 mph when I reached The Broken Stone Pizza where I was parked, I decided to make a loop around the cemetery again to drop my speed to 18.8 mph. For some reason I detest getting an …

New Week, Same Hot Weather Riding To Roman Forest

Texbiker.net Posted on August 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 14, 2023

A new week but the weather looks the same. I managed to start today’s bike ride at 8:45 AM to get in front of 103 or 104 degrees later today. Maybe a shorter ride would have been in order but I rode the New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch route for 44.23 miles. The last time biked this route was May 12th going 44.78 miles. Today’s bike ride put me over the halfway mark for August with 443.1 miles. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike and to combat the heat I packed extra water using a water bottle and CamelBak. I stopped under TX 99 on Valley Ranch Parkway for a snack break and water. To be safe I stopped at the 7 Eleven at FM 1314 for ice. I added the ice to the CamelBak and refilled the water bottle. There wasn’t much left when I finished at 12:56 PM. It was hot! Only the third ride on this route in 2023. I rode through Roman Forest on the New Caney – Roman Forest – Splendora route on July 17th. A similar route but going north on Tram Road to FM 2090 instead of riding Roman Forest Blvd. back to US59/I-69.

Weather conditions: Start 86 degrees, 78% humidity, dew point 78.4, partly cloudy, wind calm; Finish 96 degrees, 48% humidity, dew point 73.3, partly cloudy, wind SW 12 mph. The 12 mph wind made the ride back to Kingwood harder than ride to Roman Forest.
