About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Broiling On The Greenways

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2023

I decided today’s bike ride would be on the Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park and back on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. I overslept and didn’t start as early as I planned riding my Canyon Endurace at 9:10 AM. I figured it would be one ride to minimize the heat with the shade on the greenways. The NOAA app on my phone showed the high might hit 105. The last time I biked to John Pundt Park was July 24th and today would meet my goal to ride the greenway at least once each month. I should bike there more often. The typical distance is over 43 miles and today I rode 43.51 miles. Seconds after I started another cyclist rode towards me and turned onto a side street. I don’t think that has happened before. I carried extra water because there aren’t many places to refill and the couple of places don’t have cool water. Not many bikers or people on the greenway. Parking lots were almost empty. Watch the video for cyclists. I don’t ride above 17 mph on the greenways because of the many curves, people, and ups and downs. I saw one Deputy Constable on a 4-wheeler patrolling. The radar sign around the 7 mile marker got me at 17 mph. My Canyon crossed 1000 miles on this bike ride.

Finishing at 1:13 PM my home weather station showed 100 degrees. No wonder the final sips of water in my CamelBak were barely cool. Windy today. The trees slowed the wind some holding the convection effect back a little. Weather conditions: Start 87 degrees, 76% humidity, dew point 78.2, partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; Finish 100 degrees, 44% humidity, dew point 73.9, partly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph gusts 21 mph.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The trial of a Waco educator who was arrested in March 2019 in the 2016 hit-and-run death of a Baylor student was postponed Tuesday after the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office filed an 11th hour amendment to the indictment against her.

Tammy Renee Blankenship, a former school principal who worked at Midway schools, was set to stand trial Monday, Aug. 14 in Waco’s 54th State District Court on manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid charges. She is charged with leaving the scene after hitting Baylor sophomore David Grotberg, 19, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, who was cycling on Franklin Avenue.

However, prosecutors Tara Avants and Will Hix filed a motion on Monday, Aug. 7 to amend the indictment against Blankenship, and …

A First On The Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive Route

Texbiker.net Posted on August 8, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 8, 2023

I decided to do something on today’s bike ride route never done before by me, at least. I got the idea from other cyclists on the route and thought if they can do it then I can. Watch the video to see what I did.

Rolled away at 8:50 AM on my Canyon Endurace. The route was to the south and east what I label Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive. The last time I rode the route was July 25th also on my Canyon Endurace bike. I didn’t know that until I finished the ride and looked at SportTracks ride history. This was the 18th ride on the route in 2023 making it one of the most frequent routes I ride. The typical distance is 35+ miles and today was 35.72 miles. The Canyon is getting close to 1000 miles. The next ride will probably get over the mark. Several cyclists crossed my path during the ride. Some are in the video.

Heat continues to dominate the weather. The NOAA weather app shows 103 as the high for everyday this week. I finished at 11:46 AM before it got that hot. I loaded my CamelBak with ice but after the ride when I emptied it the ice was gone unlike yesterday. Weather conditions: Start 84 degrees, 80% humidity, dew point 77.4, mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 55% humidity, dew point 75.2, partly cloudy, wind SW 12 mph.

New trail makes vital and safe connection in Round Rock

by: Dylan McKim | www.kxan.com

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — The number of trails in Round Rock will soon grow even larger following the approval of the new Lake Creek trail construction that will start later this year.

The trail will make a vital connection between Round Rock West Park and Centennial Plaza, running underneath I-35. The 10-foot wide paved trail will feature a bridge over Lake Creek into the amphitheater at Centennial Plaza.

David Buzzell, the assistant director of the parks and recreation department, said the trail is an important connection in the entire system.

“It’s just a vital connection. A lot of the Round Rock west area really …

If you commute and need an emergency ride, S.A. agency wants to pay for your Uber, cab. Here’s how.

Richard Webner | www.expressnews.com

San Antonio’s Alamo Commutes will reimburse ‘smart commuters’ when something goes wrong.

One morning you take the bus to work. A few hours later, you get a call — your child has been suspended from school and you need to get there. Or your partner has come down sick. Or maybe you hurt yourself on the job and need to get to the hospital.

In any of those emergencies, you might be eligible to take a taxi, Uber or Lyft and get it paid for by a local program known as Alamo Commutes.

Here’s how it works. …
