About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Convection Oven Bike Ride North To SH 242 And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on August 7, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 7, 2023

Starting today’s bike ride after 9 AM put me in the convection oven with the temperature already 89 and the wind from the SW at 12 mph gusts to 18 mph. It has been awhile since the wind was double digits. One of the riders I follow on Strava commented on my Zwift ride yesterday that it is even hotter in Fort Worth. I can remember when I lived in Terrell and worked in Dallas the summer temperatures hit triple digits with regularity. One evening on the drive home from work I got stuck in traffic for a couple of hours on Stemmons Freeway and a bank T & T sign kept flashing 103 degrees. My Ford Pinto had no AC.

I rode north today mostly following my Kingwood – SH242 – Kingwood route. The first couple of miles reversed my usual start but that didn’t impact the totals miles too much. The last time I biked this route was June 26th on the same bike I rode today, my Cervelo Caledonia. Lately my energy seems to wane about 3/4 of the way in the ride so today I brought two granola bars and Ritz cheese crackers with me. also I used the CamelBak for water. On the way back to Kingwood I stopped under the TX 99 overpass on Valley Ranch Parkway for a 15 minute break to eat the snacks and drink cold water. I felt refreshed after the break and my legs pedaled better than I expected. I was afraid I drank too much water during the break and not have enough to finish the ride but it was just enough. When I emptied the CamelBak at home there were still ice cubes in the bladder along with a little water. The last drink I had before finishing at 12:39 PM was nice and cold.

Not many bike rides on this route in the last 12 months. Today’s average speed at the end is the lowest of the rides but it was 13.4 mph until I rode into Kings Manor. From my AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 35×13 gears 1:58:59 or 27.2 miles out the 37.01 total miles of the bike ride. The wind slowed down by the time I finished. Weather conditions: Start 88 degrees, 70% humidity, dew point 77.4, mostly cloudy, wind SW 12 mph gusts 18 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 54% humidity, dew point 74.3, partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph.

Texas Bicycling Action – August 6, 2023

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2023

Here’s why AI made an appearance before the Corpus Christi City Council

Kirsten Crow | www.caller.com

Shirin Delsooz is an ardent bicycle advocate and a regular feature at City Council meetings – but recently, she decided the case for bike infrastructure may be better made by an artificial intelligence avatar named Jonathan.

Delsooz, 37, has come to be known for her homemade videos promoting protected bike paths, sent to the city to be aired as part of public comment in meetings. In them, she describes the infrastructure as a way to improve the safety of cyclists and, by extension, benefit public, social and environmental health.

She hasn’t gotten much …

From Near Triple Digit Heat To Zwift’s Watopia Waistband

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2023

Driving home from church the Jeep’s dashboard thermometer read 100 degrees and then “cooled” to 98 when I pulled into the driveway. It was about 12:45 PM when I went inside. Yesterday during the bike ride I thought about what i could do if the temperature was that hot. Should I ride outside, not ride, or ride Zwift. The last time I rode Zwift was March 20th. Since then Zwift updates changed a number of things and maybe this was a good time to check them out. I signed into Zwift yesterday to install any updates and be ready for today. Zwift is my solution for cold or wet weather and now a very hot day too.

After changing into bike clothes I opened Zwift and attempted to connect the phone companion app but that didn’t work. Checking the WiFi network on my phone it was connected to a different one. I fixed that but still not connecting. I restarted my phone and after a few minutes the companion app connected. Using the 25km free trial I selected the Watopia’s Waistband route and started riding. Only about 5,000 people were online so the course wasn’t very crowded. I decided to ride about 15 to 17 mph and stop when I got close to the 25km distance. I made one off course turn and rode up Titan’s Grove. I should’ve not made that turn and kept on the flatter route. The ride covered 11.99 miles. I sweated a lot.

This closed out the week of biking with 234.19 miles. I rode very bike I own this week thanks to adding the Zwift ride. The Zwift miles don’t count towards my August goal but does for the Strava Year Progressions. 2023 leads all years from 2011 to 2022 with 6,019 miles year to date. Road miles YTD total 5,343, Zwift miles 680.7.

Too. Much. Heat. Left the house intending to get 28 to make my century for the day. Decided not to die today, so I cut it short a bit. Call it rounding up or pulling forward some miles from the last two Saturdays of 100+, but either way, I’m done for today.

LSD was the plan today, at my own pace and also do SCNT for the first since they got the storm damage cleared. An interesting day out, met a few people along the way-

  • @steve Williams on Happy Trail – good to catch up with him
  • Jim Robertson on BBQ – he was doing a trash pick up walk. We visited for a out 10 minutes – had to break away – we could go for hours -@dave Mackey on SCNT. Haven’t seen Dave in a long time, so good to catch up

Other notes: I think I’ve found the side connection to Roy Burroughs Park. I’ll post details on FB forums

  • my secret connection from Nanes to Bamwood was a disaster with several big trees down. I ripped myself to shreds trying to get through and then finished up on a homeless camp back on Nanes! Had to sneak through someone’s backyard to avoid going down to 1960! I’ll contact HCFCD about that.
  • had a nice time crossing Spring Creek. Sat in the creek for a few minutes to cool off!
  • Route worked well with fuel stops – breakfast Taco on 2920, sandwich at Springwoods Exxon, and sugary drinks at Shell on Kuykendahl. A hot day, but manageable with plenty of ice water over my head!

Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun

Considering that I nearly passed out yesterday morning due to what I guess was bad dehydration the evening before, I am more than happy with how I rode today! I certainly tried to take it easy, and did my share of drafting. We had a great group of about a dozen cyclists on today’s ride. As always, I am certainly most thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both spiritually and physically, and enabling me to return to this sport that I love, and for another great ride with wonderful men and women.?

Had to get a pic of a pretty good size group before we started this morning’s ride at the Comfort Park.
