About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Juneteenth Emancipation Trail Bike Ride: Houston retraces route freed slaves traveled from Galveston

www.fox26houston.com

HOUSTON – Houston and Harris County residents and lawmakers gathered Sunday morning to remember the historic trails freed slaves crossed after learning slavery ended on June 19, 1865.

While the national holiday we know now as Juneteenth, is days away, Harris Co. Commissioner Rodney Ellis hosted the fourth annual Emancipation Trail Bike Ride, which covers the route freedmen and women traveled from Galveston to Houston. …

Bicycle lanes could connect downtown with Trail de Paris

By Nic Huber | theparisnews.com

Downtown Paris could soon be connected to the Trail de Paris via bicycle lanes if reimbursement is approved by the Texas Department of Transportation.

"This bike lane would be a crucial link from the Northeast Texas Trail to downtown, so the public support for this project was broad," said Todd Mittge, an engineer for the City of Paris.

People are saying putting an elevated multi-use path in Buffalo Bayou is crazy, but how many of you know the city has a big project to connect up the Galleria with Memorial Park?

Summer Like, More Greenbelt Trails Than Usual Required Extra Thinking

Texbiker.net Posted on June 11, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 11, 2023

Summer weather moved into the area. After getting home from church, watching highlights of the prologue of the Tour de Suisse, eating a snack I got dressed for today’s bike ride. The new bike isn’t quite ready yet so I rode my Lynskey Helix bike. Today I biked Kingwood Streets & Trails adding more trails compared to when I bike Kingwood streets. It has been awhile since I rode some of the greenbelt trails and I had to think of which turns to take. The shade on the greenbelt trails felt cooler than out in the sun. A lot like when I bike on the Spring Creek Greenway. I wasn’t the only person riding a bike on the trails as you can see in the video. I started at 1:58 PM and finished at 3:46 PM riding 20.66 miles.

The week closes out with 246.78 miles and the month at 326.91 miles. Nineteen days remain for me to reach the 800 mile goal for June. I overcame not riding the first two days of June and now am at a good pace to get there. Biking in Galveston on Thursday was the highlight of the week. I think I have found a work around for the bolt computer not displaying watts by re-starting the Bolt before the ride. This week’s miles got me back to 200+ miles after two weeks of about 100 miles.

Coyote? Swim Meets, Some Cyclists And Angry Dave

Texbiker.net Posted on June 10, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJune 10, 2023

I surprised myself with the early start at 7:53 AM. The motivation was I needed to go to Kingwood Bicycles at noon to pick up my new bike. He installed the Rival eTap Quarq power meter crank arm. Today’s ride (Atascocita-Huffman-Walden route)went south through Atascocita, across Lake Houston, south on Fairlake Lane to Old Atascocita Road. I went east of FM 2100 to check for other cyclists and 2 passed me at 2 J’s driveway. I made the u-turn and headed back to FM 2100 to ride north to Huffman. FM 1960 west was into some headwind but not terribly strong at 10 mph. Back over the lake. Atascocita Shores Drive south started the ride through Walden. Exiting Walden over FM 1960 and on to Kingwood to finish the ride at 10:36 AM. I rode the Cervelo Caledonia with fresh batteries in the cadence sensor and Quarq power meter. Ride distance came in at 34.06 miles. The week now totals 226.11 miles, the month 306.24. That averages out to 30.62 miles per day, above the 27 mile per day to hit my 800 mile goal for June.

Along the ride I think I saw a coyote on Tinechester Drive in Sherwood Trails. His head was down as I approached and he walked across the street. I have seen coyotes in Kingwood before but on the greenbelt trails. Swim meets were happening at the Elm Grove Village pool and the Bear Branch Village pool. Three vehicles were in the church parking lot on Fairlake Lane. Angry Dave was along for the ride too.

Recent ride history on today’s route. I ride the same streets on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route but in different sequence which reduces the number of rides on today’s route.
