About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicyclist hit, killed by tow truck driver who may have been speeding on Beechnut, Houston police say

abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police say they believe speed may have played a factor in a crash that killed a bicyclist in southwest Houston.

Witnesses say they saw a wrecker driver speeding at about 9 p.m. on Beechnut near Braewick before crashing into a man on his bike.

"Everyone on this street speeds a lot. I’ve got my family, and it’s not good. I may have to move because everybody is speeding, mainly the tow trucks," Javier Melendez said.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The tow truck driver remained at the scene.

There is no word yet on possible charges.

I would not ride these trails if I lived next door because riding an enduro bike on the road would be more fun.

‘Space City Sweeper,’ tasked with cleaning Houston’s bike lanes, back on streets after becoming clogged with debris

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The $147,000 miniature street sweeper purchased last year by the City of Houston broke down after a few uses and had to be sent back to the manufacturer for repairs. City workers now pre-clean bike lanes of heavy debris before using the machine.

As the City of Houston gradually expands its network of bicycle lanes, it purchased a miniature street sweeper last year so it could keep those lanes clean.

The task has proven to be difficult for the Madvac LS175, which Houston Public Works dubbed as the “Space City Sweeper” in response to a community naming contest. The machine became clogged with dirt and debris after its first few uses last fall and had to be sent back to the manufacturer for repairs, according to public works spokesperson Erin Jones.

The mini sweeper returned from a months-long hiatus in April and has since …

Rainy Day Rides: Beating the Forecast on the Kingwood-Splendora-Kingwood Route

Texbiker.net Posted on May 8, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 8, 2023

I decided to try something different for today’s bike ride. It has been over a year since I rode the Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood route and wanting to repeat that ride I loaded the GPS file on my Bolt computer for turn-by-turn directions. I started the ride at 8:58 AM after pausing stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia with 68km left. The reason for the early start; the forecast said there was possibly rain during the afternoon and I wanted to finish the ride before it arrived. Before leaving I switched the saddle on my Lynskey Helix from the BiSaddle to the Velo Senso TT+ to see how it felt on a longer ride. But I forgot to adjust the height for the Velo so I stopped not long after starting the ride. I got the other measurements correct though. The last time I rode this route it was 43.74 miles. Today I biked 44.04 miles. The total for May is up to 274.73 miles. This puts me ahead of the pace to reach my 750 mile goal by 3.35 days (11.35 – 8). Today was the first time riding my Lynskey Helix on this route. The table below shows all of the different bikes used on this route.

5-8-2023 SportTracks Recent Ride History Kingwood-Splendora-Kingwood
5-8-2023 SportTracks Recent Ride History Kingwood-Splendora-Kingwood

The ride didn’t start well though because I missed the turn-by-turn directions going off course as soon as I hit the street. After realizing that I made the corrections but soon noticed that the watts weren’t showing on the Bolt computer again. I stopped at 1.2 miles and powered off the Bolt and restarted it and the watts worked perfectly for the rest of the ride. But the 1.2 miles are not included in the data since it was so soon into the ride. I didn’t merge the two data files. I got back on the turn-by-turn directions following them for the rest of the route. The beginning of the route has a number of shorts and I didn’t pay attention. I start rides in one of two directions and today I went the wrong way.

Biking north I could see the sky in my mirror and it looked threatening. The overcast sky was heavy and the humidity was too. Each mile to Splendora too me farther away in case it started raining. Biking through Splendora to head south back to Kingwood I watched the sky to see if rain was coming. I felt a few sprinkles as I rode through Oakhurst but it lasted just a minute of so. I was relieved when I finished the ride at 12:29 PM and no rain. I wasn’t dry though thanks to the humidity. Weather conditions: Start 77 degrees, 89% humidity, dew point 73.5, overcast, wind S 10 mph; Finish 79 degrees, 85% humidity, dew point 74, overcast, wind SE 13 mph. I was prepared for a headwind going south from Splendora but it wasn’t that strong. I think my direction was enough away from a straight on headwind to keep my pedaling effort lower. I did get this Strava PR on Texan / 99 (1:44) on Valley Ranch Parkway. The results on the other starred Strava segments weren’t as good.

My legs were rested because I didn’t ride yesterday due to rain when I got home from church. It cleared off around 3 PM but later than I wanted to start biking by the time the streets dried.

A ride down the West 11th bike trail

by Charles Kuffner | www.offthekuff.com

BikeRideMichauxAtWhiteOak

I’ve been riding the West 11th bike trail since it opened, mostly to go to some of my favorite lunch places. It’s been great, modulo the occasional hazards like trash/recycling bins out for collection and delivery trucks or construction vehicles parked there or protruding from a driveway. I had never biked along West 11th before because the two-lanes-each-way vehicular traffic moved far too fast and too recklessly to ever feel safe enough. I’d take one of the side roads, or if I wanted to cross at a light I’d go to White Oak or 14th, depending on what my destination was. The dedicated lane on 11th is a better experience than all of those, and I appreciate being able to cross Studewood at a light as well, as that can be tricky and occasionally death-defying otherwise. …

Sunday May 7, 2023 For the last few days I’ve noticed a LOT of donut shops around.

"Man, these people must love their donuts".

Come to find out they also serve breakfast tacos, biscuits, and croissants too. One common item is ‘Kolaches’ which are usually some type of hotdog with optional bacon, cheese, or similar. Good stuff! I wonder why I don’t see these at home? Seems like it’d be popular.

The Trailist: Trail network brings change and outdoor access to the Westside Creeks

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

A deluge of government funding has transformed formerly flood-prone creeks on the West Side into recreational spaces, with the potential to eventually serve as a conduit between downtown and the distant Leon Creek Greenway.

The Westside Creek greenways are made up of nearly 10 miles of concrete trail along Alazan, Apache, Martinez and Zarzamora creeks, which flow through the inner-city neighborhoods west of downtown. Because of flood-control projects in the 1950s, these creeks look like trapezoid-shaped drainage ditches, often lined with concrete. Despite these human influences, I often see birds like egrets and night herons stepping through the shallow waters, hunting fish, crawdads and frogs. …

Kountze TX – Cold Springs TX

Saturday May 6, 2023 It was DEFINITELY worth it!

The light show, the wind, and the deluge were impressive!

Everything stayed dry (enough).

Packed up a soggy campsite and hit the road.

-More sniveling… lol. Not a single place to get a coffee on the route today. When the path crossed a highway, I scooted North about a mile to hit a truck stop to get a cup of the good stuff that makes the Earth revolve. And yes, I enjoyed it while sitting on bench out front, sweating through my sticky clothing. -Worth it!

Made it to Made in the Shade campground and currently very happy with this. Showers and wifi for the win!
