Floyd Otis Cole Jr, 86, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, due to complications from dementia, with his son, John, by his side. He was born on April 11, 1937, in Bryson, TX to the late Floyd Otis and Alatha Cole (Plaster). Floyd grew up in McCamey, TX where he graduated from McCamey High School and was a standout all-district running back on the football field. Some of his best friends whom he cherished came from McCamey and the group got together every year for a reunion. Floyd continued his education at Texas Tech on a football scholarship and was a three-year letterman and graduated in 1958. He became a member of the alumni TT club and never missed a game. Floyd met his late wife, Geraldine of 45 years in Washington D.C., and were married in 1965. They eventually moved to Dallas where Floyd had a successful real estate career as a home builder and landlord in The Park Cities and Oaklawn. He had a love of bicycling and was a previous member of the Greater Dallas Cycling Club. He was often seen riding at White Rock Lake with the club or his family. …

Williamson County Deputies Association raising funds to give bikes to students with perfect attendance

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas – The Williamson County Deputies Association has teamed up with Purl Elementary School in Georgetown ISD to gift a bike to every student with perfect attendance, but they need the community’s help to raise funds.

Purl Elementary School in Georgetown ISD has struggled with attendance. It has the lowest rate in the district, so the Williamson County Deputies Association came up with an incentive to give a free bike to every child with perfect attendance.

Beautiful valley: Marfa to Van Horn

Sunday April 30, 2023, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 2,059 miles (3,314 km) The 3 day plan worked out well so that I was well rested to do the longer day today. Like the previous two days, the first part was a bit of climbing followed by a gradual descent into a large open valley. The valley was very bleak, but beautiful as it seemed to go on forever. There were less trees and more grasslands.

I was riding in a bowl all day surrounded by larger hills, though I wouldn’t call them mountains, but the locals may call them that. The valley was divided into large ranches as expected and I saw wild elk as well as some cattle and a few horses. There were less cars than yesterday and hwy 90 along this stretch was very nice to ride. I have been on and off hwy 90 since Florida, but I think that ends tomorrow as I head northwest toward El Paso. I may actually only have 2 days left in Texas. It seems like I’ve been in this state for a long time.

Perfect day to roll out west to Damon to recon some gravel I’ve had on the list for a while. With Locos 3 weeks out, I wanted a nice long effort to test equipment and fueling, however it’s a dangerous game as fully recovering from these efforts takes longer than you would expect. I capped my power and HR at high zone two with this in mind. Beautiful day to finish off a nice volume block, time to recover and hit a little intensity before the big dance.

The Quest for Comfort: Testing the Velo Senso TT+ Saddle. Chasing Milestones: A Sunday Ride for a 200+ Mile Week

I didn’t ride yesterday due my wimping out of the strong wind and 60 degree temperatures but it wasn’t a day with some bike activity. I watched two bike races and re-installed the Velo Senso TT+ saddle on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I wasn’t pleased with the thickness of the BiSaddle with the “flat” insert and the Velo looked better. I dialed in all the measurements for Velo and installed the Lezyne seat bag clip. The test for comfort with the Velo saddle would be today’s bike ride. Not riding left my week total at 181 miles but the weather forecast promised excellent biking weather for today.

The goal was to ride enough miles today for a 200+ mile week. I decided to ride a route I can’t remember doing on a Sunday, Atascocita – Spnish Cove – Walden. Usually I ride my Lynskey Helix bike on Sunday but I wanted to test the Velo saddle so I rode my Crvelo Caledonia bike. As promised the weather improved from Saturday, 81 degrees, fair and the wind from the west at 7 mph when I started at 1:16 PM after getting home from church, get dressed, and eating a snack. When I finished at 4:02 PM it was 86, fair, and a SW wind at 9 mph. Perfect. I wore a short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves.

The Velo saddle was comfortable for the whole ride. I wore a pair of shorts with lighter padding than some of my other bike shorts. Sometimes less is better.

Today was the fifth time biking this route. The 34.44 miles was below the average distance. I think the speed sensor battery was weak because I rode on extra streets and made a wrong turn from W. Lake Houston Parkway and once the speed was 0 while moving around 15 mph. After the ride I tested the battery and it was weak so I replaced it. Ready for the next ride.

With today’s miles the week ended with 215.19 miles. This is the third week in a row at 200+ miles. I rode 6 days and on my Cervelo 5 of those which is unusual. the other day I rode my Lynskey Helix. All rides were less than 40 miles. The average miles per ride was 35.93.

Staging day 2: Alpine to Marfa

Saturday April 29, 2023, 31 miles (50 km) – Total so far: 1,983 miles (3,191 km) I got a slow start today, but it really didn’t matter since the weather was fantastic, the goal was shorter at only 30 miles, the wind was favorable, and the terrain was not that challenging either. I was finally on the road by 9:00 AM after calling my wife and then riding slowly through Alpine to take a bunch of pictures.

Just like yesterday, the first part of the day would be climbing followed by a descent to the end. I climbed away from town and stopped often to take pictures of the surrounding beautiful hills. At the 7 mile mark, I stopped at a picnins area to tkae off the cool weather clothes. Riding into the picnic area I thought that the rear end of the bike seemed a bit soft. Rode to Woodland for choir rehearsal with orchestra, then went out to tame these disrespectful winds. Southbound LCG had a closure sign, so I rode around. Got to Valaero, and there were no closure signs. Too wet for construction, probably, but there was some water over the path. I gave that exact spot a collarbone a few years ago, so I rode around to get home, too! No riding tomorrow due to two concerts. Come join us if you’d like. Free admission.

Not as hard today: Sanderson to Marathon

Thursday April 27, 2023, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 1,952 miles (3,141 km) I was up early to hopefully get on the road to avoid the heat of the day. I walked over to the convenient store to get a couple breakfast burritos as I was still trying to replenish my body’s fuel supply. I also made sure to take a bunch of water including both 2 liter bladders. I was on the road at 7:19 AM. Today I would be climbing for the first 2/3 of the ride and then the road would level off a bit with jusdt a few long rollers.

The ride was entirely on hwy 90 and it had a pretty good shoulder, but I tried to ride out in the road as much as possible. Since there was very little traffic, riding in the right lane proved to be the plan for the day. I could see and …

Staging day 1 for Sunday: Marathon to Alpine

Friday April 28, 2023 Today and tomorrow are short days that act as a rest day since they are both around 30 miles. Why not do both days today? Well, the headwind was predicted to be quite strong today and doing the last 30 miles would have taken a LONG time and this not a race.

I slept well in the Beehive last evening. I thought that I wouldn’t like it, but actually I thought it was one of the coolest places on the property. I will admit that it is definitely one of the most unique places I’ve slept in. I talked to a couple women that were headed to Big Bend National park for a few days of hiking and camping. I’ll have to get back here and visit that park. Getting there and back on a bike can be done, but would be a stretch for me with so limited services. I think that it is a bleaker and drier area than I am going through now and camping spots are very hard to get.

Breakfast was pop-tarts and a can of Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee. With headwinds forecasted to be around 30 mph by 10:00, I got on the road by 7:15. Today’s route was a climb for the first 16 miles then it levelled off for the rest of the day. I prefer getting the climbing done early in the day.

Thousands of cyclists will leave Houston and Austin on Saturday and finish their ride in College Station on Sunday for the Texas MS 150, which raises funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mission to cure MS.
