Early Weekday Start, April Wind Gusts Workover My Legs

I was motivated to start today’s bike ride early for a weekday with Sturdy Doors arriving at 12:30 to refinish my front door. No time for a flat tire. I rolled out at 8:56 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route but left off the extra side streets I added lately on the route to reduce the ride time. It would strange to get back home before I start some bike rides during the week. I finished the ride at 11:28 AM in plenty of time for the door appointment.

Last evening I adjusted the BiSaddle on my Cervelo bike to match the width on my Lynskey Helix bike I rode yesterday. No problems during the ride today. At the start of the ride I could the difference but after a few miles I didn’t notice it any longer. Maybe I’ve been riding saddles wider than I need.

Weather conditions: start 75 degrees, 85% humidity, dew point 71, mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph; finish 80 degrees, 75% humidity, dew point 72, overcast, wind SE 17 mph gusts 28 mph. Rain may arrive tomorrow.

It was hard pedaling to the turn around point at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita road into the wind. Riding east over Lake Houston with nothing to break the wind the gusts pushed the Cervelo to the left at times. I thought the wind increased from the start and gripped the bars when a gust blew into me. Going back over Lake Houston on the way back to Kingwood the wasn’t quite as pushy but the gusts were noticeable.

The Strava segments did not show up on the Bolt computer today. Maybe I hit something on yesterday’s ride to trigger them?

Texas Hell Week continues this weekend in Fredericksburg

Numerous cyclists will be on the roads and highways of Gillespie County for Texas Hell Week, a cycling event that gathers cyclists to enjoy the Texas Hill Country and spring weather. Motorists are reminded to be cautious and respectful of cyclists and prepare for some delays on certain roads.

The designated route on Friday, March 31 begins at the Center Point-Waring-Welfare Loop, proceeding to Bankersmith-Hayden Ranch Loop.

The final day of Texas Hell Week is scheduled for Saturday, April 1 beginning at the Waring-Comfort Loop. Ultimately, cyclists will finish at the Old Tunnel-Grapetown-Luckenbach Loop. Routes may change due to weather and road conditions.

Day 30: Vanderpool to Kerrville, TX: Halfway Hunt

Monday April 3, 2023, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 1,522 miles (2,449 km) I am loving the Texas Hill Country. At last night’s map meeting we were warned about a steep climb about 4 miles into the ride. It’s named the Wall of Death or the Widow-maker. Good to have the warning cuz it turned out to be less severe than imagined. Once on top, the fun begins: Undulating hills that remind me of home. Playing With BiSaddle. Spring Creek and San Jacinto Bayou Greenways

After a successful week of bike rides last week I wanted to start this week off in the same way. It has been several months since I rode the Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park (October 5th last year to be exact). The warm weather and low rain probability also helped make up my mind. Before leaving I finished watching stage 1 of the Itzulia Basque Country race to help inspire my bike ride.

After getting ready to ride I shot a video clip about making a change to the BiSaddle on my Lynskey Helix which I was going to ride today. The clip explains what changes I made. I will make the same changes to the BiSaddle on my Cervelo Caledonia before I ride it tomorrow.

Now out the door the bike ride started at 10:57 AM. I wanted to start a few minutes earlier but took time to eat a cookie. The last ride to Pundt Park was 42.59 miles and i wanted to ride at least that far. I didn’t look at the map from the October 5th ride but I thought I had a good idea on the streets to take. I rode through several Kingwood villages to Forest Cove and Hamblen Road to get to the trailhead at US59/I-69. That was about 10.5 miles into the ride. Pundt Park was over 10 miles away but I took a loop around to the parking lot at Jesse Jones Park rather than the shorter route. At Carter Park I took another side trip on Treashwig Road and back to the greenway. Once I reached Pundt Park I took another side trip on Spring Creek Drive and Birmhamwood Blvd. and then returned to Pundt Park. At the park I stopped at some picnic tables under a cover where two other men were talking and joined the conversation. One was riding his bike and the other man had walked from Dennis Johnston Park about 2.6 miles beyond Pundt Park. I ate a granola bar to fuel me for the return trip and drank some water. The bike ride left and I got ready to leave and the other man left too. On the way back I rode on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway to Kingwood. It had been awhile since I rode that greenway from west to east though I have rode east to west several times.

Weather for the bike ride: start 81 degrees, 73% humidity, dew point 71, overcast, wind SW 10 mph; finish 87 degrees, 63% humidity, dew point 73, overcast, wind S 13 mph gusts 20 mph. The trees along both greenways help when it gets hot.

Earlier in the ride as I exited Jesse Jones Park I noticed my Bolt computer screen popped a Strava segment and started giving me data about how I was doing on the segment. I had never seen that before on a ride. The segment was interrupted when I rode onto Treaschwig Road. On the way back from Pundt Park two more Strava segments showed on the Bolt and I increased my speed for the segments. I wonder if segments will show up on my other rides now. I’ll find out on tomorrow’s bike ride. Below are some segment results.

The recent completion of the 11th-12th Street underpass on Interstate 35 will not only help drivers get from Baylor University to downtown but will provide the missing link in a crosstown bicycle corridor years in the making, bike advocates say.

The underpass saw its full opening last weekend, four years after the Texas Department of Transportation removed the old overpass as part of the $341 million reconstruction of Interstate 35 through Waco. Pedestrians can now take a sidewalk under I-35 at the crossing, and bike traffic can cross under the freeway at grade instead of having to climb a steep overpass.

Cyclists working with Harlingen officials on emergency alert system

About 20 years after city officials opened the first stretch of the Arroyo Hike and Bike Trail, a local mountain biking group began carving out about 10 miles of dirt tracks drawing hundreds of racers.

Day 29: Camp Wood to Vanderpool, TX: Texas Hill Country

Sunday April 2, 2023, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 1,475 miles (2,374 km) Warm start. Set out early to ride at my own pace knowing that there are three significant climbs today. The first one comes pretty quickly after turning off Hwy 55 onto TR 337. We had been told this is motorcycle heaven and a sign informs drivers that 22 motorcyclists have been killed on this road since 2006.
