About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Donnie Tuggle | www.kbtx.com

Allison will be competing in cycling and is the only female cyclist going from the State of Texas.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) -With less than 100 days until the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, one athlete from College Station is training hard for the chance to bring home a gold medal.

The College Station resident will compete alongside just over 200 hundred athletes with the goal of covering the distance as quickly as possible to reach the finish line in their perspective competitions and races.

Her loved ones view this opportunity as a once-in-a-lifetime chance, one she’s worked tirelessly to earn.

“For several years she’s …

Houston bike deaths outpacing 2022

Jay R. Jordan | www.axios.com

Houston is on pace to outnumber last year’s bike deaths on our streets, advocates say.

Why it matters: A pair of recent deadly crashes involving cyclists highlights the lack of safe cycling infrastructure throughout the Bayou City, even as Houston transportation authorities work to bolster the bike network.

The big picture: Bryan Nost, 35, died Feb. 28, four days after he was hit while riding his bike by the driver of a delivery van in the 7000 block of West Gulf Bank Road, near North Houston-Rosslyn Road, police said. …

DART’s marriage to Dallas is on the rocks

By Dallas Morning News Editorial | www.dallasnews.com

Most Dallas residents aren’t tuned into the troubled marriage between City Hall and Dallas Area Rapid Transit. They should be. Hanging in the balance are tens of millions of dollars for sidewalks, traffic signals and bike lanes.

Dallas and DART have clashed about the terms under which the transit agency would hand $111 million in excess sales tax to the city. A recent ultimatum from DART that it could withhold about three-quarters of that money because of delays and requested changes to the Silver Line project did not sit well with city leaders.

“I think it’s unfair,” City Manager T.C. Broadnax said at a recent public meeting.

But Dallas needs to look in the mirror. It appears the …

Bicyclist hospitalized after being hit by vehicle

by: Gabriela Gonzalez | www.valleycentral.com

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A bicyclist was taken to a hospital after being hit by a truck Monday evening in Harlingen, authorities say.

Officers with the Harlingen Police Department responded 4th Street and Tyler Avenue in reference to an auto-pedestrian accident.

A woman claimed to be hit by an older man in a truck while riding her bike, authorities say. The truck driver stopped to help and called to police to the scene.

Responding officers closed the northern portion of the street to help the bicyclist.

The woman was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gearing Up to End Hunger at Gator Ride

By Mark Kramer | baytownsun.com

With a brisk wind blowing and clear skies on Saturday, more than 480 cyclists took to the roads for a good cause during the 34th annual Gator Ride.

Hearts and Hands of Baytown is now serving as the organizer of the event, which was previously led by the YMCA since 1989. All proceeds from the event are going toward the Gear Up to End Hunger annual campaign to provide assistance to families in need.

“We are overwhelmed by the show of support and all of the riders who participated in this event,” said Nikki Rincon, Hearts and Hands executive director. “Their generosity is certainly appreciated and will go a long way to helping our food pantry provide assistance to local families.”

The ride began on …

Joey Leto and Korie Gilbert win the men’s and women’s individual titles.

March 13, 2023, BAKERSFIELD, Calif. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – It was a rainy weekend in Bakersfield, California for the 2023 USA Cycling Collegiate BMX National Championships. With two busy days of racing, the battle for the team omnium win put Marian University back on top.

Collegiate Women

The collegiate women fought hard through the rainy weekend. Lindsey Wilson College rider, Korie Gilbert (Pearland, Texas) was the points leader heading into day two of racing. The LWC senior ended up on top and finished the weekend with a gold medal after the team’s trailer got stolen with all of their equipment just days before the race. Marian University’s, Mya Ramos (Albuquerque, N.M.) would take second, and Sierra Altendorf (Everette, Wash.; Colorado Mesa University) would take third.

Collegiate Men

With two days of strong racing, Lindenwood University’s Joey Leto (Mayakka, Fla.) dominated both races on Friday and Saturday and took his first individual title just a few weeks after standing on his first elite podium in Oldsmar, Fla. Colorado Mesa University’s Evan Schaefer (Sarasota, Fla., Colorado Mesa) would take second and Cameron Wing (Garland, Texas; Marian University) would take third. …

Zwift – Started Makuri Islands Chasing The Sun Then Changed

Texbiker.net Posted on March 13, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 13, 2023

The last time I rode Zwift was February 18th since the weather has been good for riding outside. Today it was cooler than I prefer at 55 degrees when the decision time came on whether to ride outside or on Zwift. I chose Zwift.

Looking at the upcoming events there wasn’t one that interested me or started soon enough. I looked at the list of routes in Makuri Islands and saw I hadn’t rode before, Chasing The Sun. It is 21.8 miles and climbs 1,034 feet according to the description in Zwift. That looked doable. I got dressed, warmed up for about 5 minutes and then started the ride.

The climbing was concentrated in two hills, the first one starting around 5km and the second at 17km. I rode over the first climb but when the turn came to the Forest Climb I changed the route. Up to that point I had climbed 619 feet and I didn’t want to climb the remaining 400 feet. I wasn’t sure where I would go. I made a couple of other turn changes from the roads Zwift put up. I based my choice on how flat the options were and chose the flatter one. I ended up riding 13.0 miles out of the 21.8 miles on Chasing The Sun. At that point I moved to the Castle Path road. I turned on a couple of other roads from the planned ones Zwift showed. I rode 22.16 miles and climbed 807 feet. Longer distance, less climbing.

Strava reported to top results: PR on Railways and Rooftops (14:32) and 2nd fastest time on Railway Sprint (55s).

Avenue B and Alamo Street bike lanes offer a limited glimpse of the possibilities

Avatar photo by Robert Rivard | sanantonioreport.org

A few years ago, a passenger in a pickup truck slapped my wife Monika on the back and then threw a beer bottle at her as she rode her bike south on Broadway amid vehicle traffic. Since then I’ve tried without success to get her back riding the streets of the city’s urban core with me.

Late last year she picked out a sleek new Trek hybrid, complete with lights and a friendly bell. We went for safe rides on the protected Mission Reach, and last week she declared herself ready for the Tuesday evening SATX Social Ride, the city’s biggest weekly recreational cycling event. There is safety in numbers, I assured her. Hundreds of participants with all levels of experience on all sorts of bikes are led by founder Jeff Moore, ride organizer Yvette Hernandez and other experienced cyclists.

Busy Week Biking Closing Out On Kingwood Streets & Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on March 12, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 12, 2023

It’s not often that I bike Kingwood streets twice in a week but I did this week. I rode different bikes each ride. This week has been a busy bike ride one with a total of 237.49 miles, all on the road, the first week over 200 miles in 2023. The last week with more miles was September 19 to 25 with 246.16 miles. Riding the Gator Ride in Baytown yesterday helped. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia 5 days and the Lynskey 2 days.

3-12-2023 Week Bike Rides Summary 3-6-23 to 3-12-23
3-12-2023 Week Bike Rides Summary 3-6-23 to 3-12-23

On today’s ride some portions of the route went opposite of my usual direction putting a couple of hills in my way. The first was on the greenbelt trail through Kingwood Lakes and the second was going up Laurel Springs Lane from Hamblen Road. I stopped at the park in Kingwood Lakes for these photos.

I got four medals from Strava. Three of them: PR on Crystal Springs to Barrington (1:28), 2nd fastest time on Laurel Spring Nbound St. Andrews (2:52), and 3rd fastest time on Crystal Springs to Hamblen (Rivergrove) (4:10).
