About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

People Adopt Bikes To Get To Work

Texbiker.net Posted on June 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJune 22, 2008

I don’t know about you but I am beginning to see more and more stories about people riding bicycles to work. With gas at or above $4 per gallon whatever was holding people back from riding a bike to work seems to be getting pushed aside.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram ran this story, “More workers are riding bikes to work to sidestep high gas prices” online today.

What have you seen?

Houston Bicyclists Battle for Right-Away

Texbiker.net Posted on June 21, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJune 21, 2008

From the Houston Community newspaper The Sun

By VAL CLIFTON

“Many motorists don’t think bicycles belong in the roadway,” Wang said. “You have to put up with a certain amount of discrimination.”

Outside Houston city limits, Harris County has “no interest” in building facilities for bicyclists on roads or streets, he said.

“Some of the precincts have some very nice trails, but none that are on road that actually serve destinations like schools, businesses or retail,” Wang said. “They are recreational in nature. No one lives on a trail or buys groceries on a trial, so they aren’t usable for transportation.”

Bike DFW Raises Safety Issues

Texbiker.net Posted on June 21, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJune 21, 2008

The Dallas Morning News reports on the efforts Bike DFW has made to raise the awareness of the safety issues of bicycling in Dallas. In the last several weeks a number of cyclists have been injured and ywo were killed.

From the online article:

Bike DFW launched its petition Sunday to raise awareness of the two-wheel riders – and to encourage local governments to find ways to increase safety, such as bike lanes on some roads.

More than 3,600 people had signed the petition as of Thursday night, but the group hopes to rack up 100,000 signatures.

"Cyclists are like an invisible population," said Chris Phelan, one of the petition’s authors and founder of the annual Ride of Silence, which honors cyclists killed while riding. "They’re just not seen by motorists or city government."

According to the Alpine Avalanche, the National Park Service is considering a change in the mountain bike access for many parks.

"The National Park Service is considering a plan that potentially opens millions of acres of national park backcountry to mountain bikes, according to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).
