About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Back After Almost 2 Years. Zwift Watopia Sand and Sequoias

Texbiker.net Posted on January 5, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 5, 2023

I thought I would ride on the road but after working on a bunch of paperwork the temperature was in the low 60’s so I decided Zwift was where I would ride. The upcoming events were on routes I rode recently or too fast paced. Another free ride was in order. I’m not sure why I landed on the Watopia Sand and Sequoias route. In SportTracks I saw the last time I rode this route was January 21, 2021, almost 2 years ago and only once before that. Both of those rides were less than 17 miles but I wanted to ride 20 miles. ZwiftInsider.com’s map showed one KOM, Titans Grove, and I hoped riding 20 miles didn’t put me climbing up twice. I got close to the second time up Titans Grove but ended the ride on the approaching hilly section.

Fuego Flats allowed me to ride around 20 mph with a few bursts up to 23 mph until the rolling hills slowed me down before going up Titans Grove KOM. Several large groups passed me in both directions. My last Zwift ride I was in the rain for part of the ride. No rain but some low hanging clouds in the hills.

I wasn’t the only person Zwifting this morning. Over 25,000 when I started and a little over 24,000 when I ended the ride. I rode the Cannondale Evo frame with the Shimano C40 wheels. I listened to Pandora’s Contemporary Christian Radio station while I pedaled.

The Wahoo Kickr Core smart trainer felt like it wasn’t adjusting the resistance to match the terrain. Maybe I need another spin down. Or maybe the route didn’t require adjustments because I have the effort set to 50% in Zwift.

My weekly effort in Strava was below the week’s range.

Jacket With 3 Rear Pockets. Grabbed A Local Legend

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2023

Today I rode to the north for the first time this year. Not a real big claim since it is only January the 4th. I tried to ride to the north last week but got caught in the rain and turned back. No rain today just lots of sun but a little cooler than I prefer. I decided to wear one of the new jackets I bought last month from Voler. The jackets (I bought 2) have real rear pockets to hold my phone and key rather than no pocket or one big pocket. Several years ago I bought a jacket like that but it has been hard to find them.

The 70 degrees at the 12:10 PM start was much better than the 44 degrees my home weather station showed when I got up. The forecast was promising and I watched as it climbed into the 60’s. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on my Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood route. I tried to be attentive on following the route so that Strava would find other rides to match against. Strava found a total of three including today. I suspect the reason for not matching more is the times I avoided riding on Rock Creek Drive to Northpark Drive which I rode today. The dogs at that intersection seem to be gone so I ride there now.

Year progressions YTD mileage after today’s bike ride now puts 2023 clearly ahead of 2011 through 2022. How long will that last? I’m planning on biking either outside or inside each day but sometimes interruptions happen.

My legs felt good today and the 8 mph wind wasn’t too strong. A couple of places where the route headed west it was hard pedaling but I built up my overall average speed to 14.0 mph and held it there for a number of miles.

I captured the Strava Local Legend on Briar Willow to Lodge in Briar Tree with my 9th ride in the last 90 days.

Weather during the bike ride: start 70 (humidity 37%, dew point 43), a few clouds, wind W 8 mph; finish 72 (humidity 31%, dew point 39), partly cloudy, wind 8 mph.
