About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Racing Towards November Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on November 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumNovember 9, 2022

In a race to get more miles towards my 360 mile November goal I rode north to FM 1485 and back south to Kingwood. Friday or Saturday weather below my outside riding threshold is predicted to arrive. Then I will shift to indoors riding Zwift which doesn’t count towards my goal. I started at 10:21 AM and was back home at 1:10 PM after biking 31.9 miles, upping my November total road miles to 66. This was the eleventh time I rode the Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood route in 2022. Today I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike and the distance was a little below the average for other 10 rides.

Weather conditions: start 78 (humidity 76%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph; finish 82 (humidity 64%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph.

My legs are still recovering from the 7 days off the bike due to sickness. The 10 mph wind on the way back to Kingwood challenge them some and a few times my speed dropped to around 12 mph until I recovered after a few minutes.

My four rides in the last 90 days brought me the Strava Local Legend on Rock Creek Southbound. Now that the dogs seem to be gone I will probably ride this segment more often.

Missed 7 Days Of Riding

Texbiker.net Posted on November 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumNovember 8, 2022

It has been a week since I was on my bike. I was sick and today was the first day I felt well enough to get out and enjoy early summer weather during the fall. In addition to not feeling well my niece has been in the ICU at the same time. Not a good week. And Daylight Saving Time rolled back too. The trifecta of bad stuff.

I got the bike ride underway at 11:40 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route for the 32nd time this year. I didn’t expect to ride fast and treated this as a recovery ride finishing at 2:32 PM after riding 34.09 miles. I thought not biking for a week that 2022 YTD miles would fall behind 2021 and 2020 but that didn’t happen.

Strava Year Progressions YTD Miles

The warm weather has a few more days until a cold front arrives on Friday sometime. My goal for November is 360 miles and I am way behind. There will be some Zwift rides if it is cold as the weather forecast predicts. Today’s weather: start 84 (humidity 56%, dew point 67), a few clouds, wind E 12 mph; finish 85 (humidity 54%, dew point 66), a few clouds, wind SE 17 mph. The headwind was strong getting to Huffman but helped me on the return to Kingwood.

I used the 35×13 gears for most of the ride even into the headwind.

Louisiana man bikes 800 miles across Texas

by: Abigail Jones | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Daniel Barousse is a full-time artist and furniture-maker living in Lafayette, Louisiana, so why did he spend nearly two weeks bicycling 800 miles across Texas? For him, it’s simple: to try to instill the same joy and passion that he feels in others.

His journey started with shoes when he was 11 years old. Barousse was at a new middle school, trying to find ways to fit in. The school required uniforms, so the only way to distinguish oneself was through shoes, and he noticed that the “cool kids” all wore Doc Martens. So he asked his parents for a pair for Christmas, but they said no.

Fast-forward about two months, Barousse bought his first skateboard with the …

Thanks to Biden, Houston gets bike lanes too – no one thanks him

by Ruetir | www.ruetir.com

Whether you ask at Emanuel bakery-restaurant, in the Huetamo hair salon, used car dealer Jorge Cantu or in the N&V launderette. Virtually every entrepreneur on Telephone Road, in Houston, reacts enthusiastically when he hears that his street will be completely renovated next year. Water drainage is being improved, the sidewalks are being refurbished and the many holes in the road surface are being closed. There will even be bike paths – unusual in the car-dominated Texas metropolis.

But if you already know that the renovation is imminent; no one knows who to thank for it: President Joe Biden and his Democrats. On Tuesday, they will try to maintain their wafer-thin majorities in both houses of Congress in the midterm elections. Among the legislative achievements they hope to benefit from are the Infrastructure and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. …

El Paso bicyclist killed after hit-and-run crash

By Samuel Harasimowicz | kvia.com

UPDATE — Special Traffic Investigators continue to investigate after the death of bicyclist.

According to EPPD, 25- year-old Kayci Deaundre McCrory was traveling east in the far right lane of I-10 near Dallas on an electric bicycle.

McCrory was struck from behind around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Investigators say the driver of Black F-150 fled the scene, but the vehicle received front-end damage.

Police said moments later a second vehicle was planning on exiting the freeway when he struck the bicyclist who was lying on the ground.

Bicycle riders at Landa Park in New Braunfels, circa 1905. Look at those huge cranks. And can you imagine riding in wool sweaters with caps like this? Really a super shot.
