About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Jason Jones | www.palestineherald.com

Organizers of the upcoming Camino Gravel Challenge recently congratulated local cyclist, 11-year-old Lennox Raum, for the winning submission in the 2022 event’s t-shirt design contest.

Obviously no stranger to drawing, art and design, Lennox’s submission featured an eye-catching layout and plenty of East Texas elements to tie the event to the Palestine area. …

Cyclists Aplenty On Atascocita – Huffman – Walden Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 17, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 17, 2022

Not as early of a start as last Saturday for today’s bike ride. I did manage to get the Cervelo Caledonia wheels rolling at 8:22 AM. The route was my typical Saturday one, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden where I hope to see other cyclists. I saw a bunch today. This was the 20th time biking this route this year and today I rode 33.11 miles, about average for the route.

I started seeing other cyclists On Kings River Drive on the way to FM 1960. Once I started crossing Lake Houston the number of cyclists went up in groups of 3 to 4 though there was a larger group on Fairlake Lane as they passed the church. A number of cars and pickups were in the church parking lot indicating some cyclists out riding.

The weather was friendly but humid at the start. Wind was calm but increased a little during the ride to 8 mph from the SE. Weather conditions: start 75 (humidity 99%, dew point 74), mostly clear, wind N 0 mph; finish 86 (humidity 73%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. Headwind wasn’t much of problem during the ride.

From my AXS.SRAM ride report it showed using the 35×13 gears for 1:28:11 (21.6 miles) and the 35×15 gears for 40:31 (7.4 miles). I changed the RD gears 26 times during the ride, mostly getting up to speed and then stopping and restarting at traffic lights.

Below is a chart showing my fitness trend for a 6 month period. This comes from my Strava ride data and the Stravini Chrome browser extension. Lot of lines but overall I think it looks favorable.

Mixing Up Bike Ride Routes, Missed Brief Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on September 16, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 16, 2022

This has been a mixed up week for bike rides. The routes have been varied with no repeats. Today’s bike ride was the first one to go north on my New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route. I even got started earlier than yesterday with wheels down at 9:11 AM today. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike for 36.88 miles. This gets me closer to a 200 mile with 185.91 miles so far. Today’s route is one of my more frequent ones with 12 rides so far this year. I finished the bike ride at 12:09 PM

While I was out riding the weather changed some with the clouds increasing and the wind shifting to the SE. Near the end of the ride the streets in Bear Branch Village and Hunters Ridge Village were wet from an earlier rain before I got there. It wasn’t much rain because my weather station didn’t record any. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 78 (humidity 81%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph; finish 82 (humidity 82%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind SE 6 mph. Fortunately the wind remained light.

On the way back to Kingwood I built up my average speed to 14.1 mph and maintained it until I got to the Kingwood streets and riding slower. I used the 35×13 gears for 1:56:10 riding time out a total moving time 2:43:16 according to the AXS.SRAM ride report. I shifted the RD 19 times during the ride. At the beginning of the ride I thought my legs were not going to pedal strongly but by around mile 7 they felt better.
