About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

It Was Hot, Appreciated The Shade More

Texbiker.net Posted on July 31, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 31, 2022

Changing up a route can be difficult at times when riding them so often. Before starting the I thought of how to make biking Kingwood streets different and came up with biking the opposite direction plus adding a couple of different streets or parking lots. Starting in the heat of the day at 1:26 after getting home from church and getting dressed meant it could be a tough ride compared to the other days when I start at 9 AM or earlier. I finished at 3:00 and the temperature increased even more after the ride so I guess I didn’t ride in the hottest time of the day. Good training for the HH100 in late August. I rode the opposite direction on almost every street which looks different, potholes are in new places, the turns can look different (I got confused at one intersection almost making the wrong turn), scenery is backward and new. In Royal Brook which I always use the Bolt’s maps because I can’t remember which turns to make was even more strange going the opposite way. I surprised myself getting to Hueni Road through Royal Brook without making any wrong turns. Not too long after than I rode through Woodstream in the opposite direction but with not so many turns and emerged where I wanted to be. The next challenge was biking streets through Fosters Mill which I’ve only done a couple times in the other direction. I recalled a couple of landmarks and made the correct turns with the help of the Bolt computer’s map. This was not the route to ride in a daze, I had to think about the streets and turns.

Today completed my biking for the week and the month which doesn’t happen often. I biked 19.27 miles finishing the week with 233.1 miles riding every day in July. For the month the total was 1015.2 miles beating April’s 1014.9 miles just barely. Checking my logs I don’t see a year with more than 1 month at 1000+ miles. This was the 10th week in a row at 200+ miles which got me to the 1000+ miles for July. All the rides this week were less than 40 miles and the longest all month was 43.4 miles on the 18th. This put the average ride distance at 32.74 miles. for July. I’m keeping the year to date mileage close to 2021 (5,788 miles) and 2020 (5,806) numbers with 5,773 this year.

July is hot in Texas and today was no exception. Starting in the afternoon adds to the exposure to heat but it made me appreciate the moments riding in the shade more. Some salt stains again on my mostly black kit. The CamelBak ice melts some but kept the water cold until the finish. Weather conditions: start 95 (humidity 45%, dew point 70), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph; finish 95 (humidity 41%, dew point 68), partly cloudy, wind SE 6 mph gusts 20 mph. At times during the ride the wind felt strong but I didn’t realize it was 20 mph gusts until I saw the weather after the ride. Kingwood’s trees buffered some of the wind.

During the night I had a leg cramp and I wondered if that would affect my ride but I didn’t notice any problem thankfully. Biking Kingwood’s streets is not a high speed ride because of the stops and greenbelt twists and turns. I did manage a Strava 3rd fastest time on pool to the school (2:24) riding along Mills Branch Drive, a segment I wasn’t aware of.

6976 Crank Revolutions During The Ride, Interesting

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2022

Earliest bike ride start in a couple of weeks with wheels rolling at 7:55 AM and finishing at 10:31 AM. That may have contributed to not seeing as many other cyclists as I sometimes see when biking my “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. I saw several but they were spread along the ride with no groups. With sunrise coming later the group rides probably are not starting quite as early as they did. I managed to include most of the cyclists in the video but a few escaped the lens of the GoPro. Speaking of the GoPro, it froze once during the ride just when I passed another cyclist. I still haven’t figured out why it does this. Some rides it doesn’t happen and other rides it happens once or twice. I thought it might be the heat but it wasn’t that hot today when it froze. Fortunately I found a way to get it working again, press the power button for 10 to 15 seconds and it comes back to life. I use the GoPro Quick Capture when the problem happens. This helps the battery last longer and shortens my video editing time.

Before the ride began my week total was 180.97 miles and the ride today came in at 32.89 miles improving my week to 213.87 miles and July to 995.96 miles. I plan on biking tomorrow which should make July a 1,000+ mile month, the second one this year. So far I’ve biked this route 16 times and the distance has varied from 32 to 34 miles. Pretty consistent considering I like to vary the streets from time to time. I did that today during the first mile, riding through Bear Branch Village in Kingwood, and going on Sunny Shores Drive and Rebawood Drive on the way to FM 1960 in Atascocita. I didn’t ride very far east of FM 2100 like I do on some rides. The route profile is flat with a few inclines in Atascocita, one on Sunny Shores goes up slowly over a half mile.

While the temperature wasn’t yet to 80 degrees when I started the humidity was a muggy 95% offsetting the lower temperature. The airport weather station report no wind but I think there was a light breeze early in the ride. Later on the way back across Lake Houston I used the 35×15 gears because I could go faster with less effort than using the 35×13 gears. Biking north seemed to have the most favorable wind. What the weather looked like: start 79 (humidity 95%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 88 (humidity 67%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. The dew point is important too for the weather feel and the ability of my bike kit to offload sweat to keep me cool.

It took awhile to get my overall average speed to 13 mph and above because this route has so many stops and starts. Long uninterrupted road is needed for me to get my speed up and improve the average speed. My AXS.SRAM ride report shows 2:29:08 overall moving time, 1:11:16 using the 35×13 gears and 56:18 pedaling 35×15 gears. I find the pedaling time interesting and today it was 1:41:52 according to Strava. That was 6976 crank revolutions. My legs felt strong except for the ride west over Lake Houston into the headwind. Sometimes I get frustrated with the Favero pedals and clipping back in. They are not as easy as the Shimano Ultegra pedals. This might be enough reason to switch to a crankset power meter with the Ultegra pedals when the Favero ones reach the end of their life. Favero offers a conversion kit for Shimano pedals but the Q factor increases a lot.

Video: Corpus Christi cyclist raise concerns over unprotected bike lanes

Author: Mariah Gallegos | www.kiiitv.com

A petition with more than 600 signatures calls for safer bike lanes across the city.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In response to the release of the City’s proposed budget, one local woman raised concerns over what was not included.

It is an issue Shirin Delsooz said she brought to the city’s attention about a year ago, and felt it still hasn’t been addressed in budget talks.

"I don’t know why they totally ignored my 625 signature petition," said Delsooz, a cyclist advocate.

She started a petition about 10 months ago, calling for safer bike paths in the city.

"This is not just an issue of our children like it’s an issue, it’s fighting for homeless people, it’s …

High-end kids’ bikes maker opens up its Austin shop

Asher Price | www.axios.com

A global bike brand whose U.S. headquarters are in Austin will open its showroom for the first time this Saturday.

The big picture: Woom and some other companies that specialize in lightweight, high-end bikes for kids are quietly revolutionizing how children learn to cycle.

Instead of the clunky, wobbly convention of training wheels, they start kids on pedal-less balance bikes, which little ‘uns move Fred-Flintstone-style until they start gliding … and then pedaling becomes a breeze. …

Texas 4000 riders pass through Whistler en route to Alaska

Megan Lalonde | www.piquenewsmagazine.com

To most people, travelling the approximately 6,500 kilometres from Austin to Anchorage by bike likely doesn’t sound like a particularly good time. But Mason Schlechte was looking forward to making the trek in 2020 in honour of a good friend’s family, as part of Texas 4000, an annual charity ride that sees University of Texas students raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer.

Schlechte never made it to the starting line, after tragically passing away in 2019.

“I kind of applied to finish what he started and take on his mission; ride for the family friends he had who were affected by cancer and showed him so much kindness when he …

Bike ride through Gulfton hopes to determine community air quality

Haya Panjwani | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

Air Alliance Houston is setting up riders with bikes equipped with air monitors that detect volatile organic compounds, nitrogen dioxides and particulate matter that can affect residents’ health.

The effects can currently be seen in residents of the area, according to the alliance.

”They also contribute to a generalized array of what is generally experienced as the most common experienced symptoms of air pollution exposure, so breathing problems, heart and lung complications, asthma," said Anthony DeSouza, the alliance’s research and policy coordinator.

The hardware the bikes will be using is a battery powered air monitor. It’ll be able to …
