The Bowie BMX Bike Racing Park hosted its three-day racing weekend last week, culminating with a state qualifier race on June 16 that attracted top riders from across the state. To see more pictures from the event, pick up a copy of the weekend edition of the Bowie News.
Three options to revamp the city’s bike thoroughfares on Mallard Lane moved along this past week at the Taylor City Council, including one suggestion with a $2 million price tag that involves resurfacing the road.
No action was taken on the issue at the June 13 meeting, session, though nearly 20 residents and cycling enthusiasts signed up to air their opinions.
Taylor’s comprehensive plan calling for the addition of bike lanes on city streets has continually come under fire since the rubber met the road and lanes were actually created.

On Saturday bike rides I look forward to seeing other cyclists. Today I saw many more than usual on Old Atascocita Road east of FM2100 (see the video). Getting an early start at 8:12 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike I rode through Elmgrove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, North Woodland Hills Village, Bear Branch Village, Kings Forest, and Kingwood Greens to get to W. Lake Houston Parkway. On the way to FM1960 I saw the first cyclists. As I turned left onto FM1960 the orange barrels were gone and new road stripes too their place. The shoulder was narrower for a couple hundred yards the back to normal. The wind was manageable riding east over Lake Houston. Fairlake Lane and Old Atascocita Road to FM2100 had a couple of cyclists. Crossing over FM2100 cyclists coming towards me looked like the usual ones. After I made the u-turn at Shelton Services I was surprised to see a large number of cyclists headed east followed by another smaller group. That is unusual. I’m not sure where they came from but it was great to see so many.
The route back to Walden was the usual Saturday one. Exiting Walden I rode on a new short section of the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail to Farmingham Road. Crossing over Farmingham Road I took the Hike & Bike Trail towards W. Lake Houston Parkway. Thursday I checked on the mud under FM1960 and it was gone. I was hopeful that was still the case though it rained several times since that ride. No significant mud as I went under the bridge and up the other side. With that success I created a new route: Atascocita – Huffman – Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail. The rest of the ride went as planned and finished at 10:58 AM.
Humidity was high at the start and I was soaked with sweat when I finished. Not much wind to dry up the sweat either. Weather: Start 78 degrees, humidity 96%, dew point 76.7, a few clouds, wind variable 4 mph; Finish 88 degrees, humidity 63%, dew point 74.1, a few clouds, wind E 10 mph.

POCATELLO — Over 25 participants in a 4,000-mile bike ride from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, stopped in Pocatello this week, sharing critical information about cancer research.
The Texas 4,000 for Cancer nonprofit organization involves the dedicated hard work of University of Texas students who work within an 18-month program to prepare for the 70 day, 4,000-mile bike ride.
The volunteers all come from various walks of life with a simple unifying cause that brings them together. Through three foundational pillars of hope, knowledge and charity the students dedicate their entire summer to further the causes of cancer research, bring lifesaving information about cancer prevention to communities and inspire hope to those facing difficulty with cancer. …
Advocacy groups like Bike DFW said this is a good time to remind everyone on the roadways to pay attention and be careful
The cycling community is still in shock after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a couple of cyclists and ran over one of them, near DFW Airport on Monday.
In a video posted to social media, a white SUV is seen approaching two cyclists from behind at about 6:30 p.m. on June 17, striking them both and causing them to fall off their bikes. The SUV then ran over 69-year-old Tom Geppert.
“Watching the video, I’m so angry. It looked like he could’ve stopped before he rolled over me, but then he sped up and went right over me,” said Geppert who suffered a …
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – The El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members next Wednesday, one of them being Pablo Darancou.
Darancou was a cyclist who started competing in his early 20’s. He later went on to win two National Senior Games cycling competitions on a 40-kilometer road race.
His son Pablo Darancou Junior also developed a strong passion for cycling. Junior was well-known for being an amazing competitive cyclist on an international and national level.
Tragically, Junior lost his life in 1984 when he was hit by a drunk driver while he was training.
Darancou continued to compete to carry out his sons legacy winning hundreds of medals but as he got older he had to put cycling to the side.
Did you know that League City has 15 City Parks, 2 Dog Parks and 24 miles of Hike & Bike Trails? There is also a host of other amenities available to our citizens such as paddle trails, granite walking/running trails and a mountain bike course.
The Project Management group works in conjunction with the Parks Department to design and construct these amenities and renovate them when they have reached the end of their useful life. We are currently working on eight projects in varying stages of design or construction. Below are a few highlights from our on-going projects. …

For awhile I wanted to change the New Caney – Gene Campbell Road route name because it doesn’t really describe where the ride goes. Today I added a side trip to The Highlands from FM1314 and it was time to come up with a better name: New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd – The Highlands – FM1314. Much better description and about 2 miles longer as well. Wheels down and rolling at 9:56 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I rode through several Kingwood villages, Woodridge Forest to get to the US59 northbound frontage road. I stayed on there until TX99 riding to Loop 494 with my first taste of the east wind. Loop 494 took me to Payne Road, back to the frontage road for a couple hundred feet to loop under US59 and on to FM1485. A little over 2 miles on FM1485 I turned left onto Gene Campbell Blvd. Not long after that a Strava segment popped up on the Bolt computer screen lasting 2.09 miles. A loop around the industrial park brought me back to Gene Campbell Blvd. The next excursion went through Porters Mill where I stopped for a few minutes at the pool. Several people were in the pool keeping cool and wet.
Back to Gene Campbell Blvd. and then FM1314. I expected some headwind on FM1314 and when the traffic wasn’t passing me it was there. Cumberland Blvd. came after riding under TX99 where I rode to The Highlands entrance and made the u-turn back to FM1314. The Circle K at Sorters Road looked like a good place to eat the cinnamon swirl I brought and drink water. A couple of people chatted with me as they came and went into the store. FM1314, Old Sorters Road took me to Briar Tree, then Oakhurst, Northpark Drive, Kingwood Place, and back to US59 for the last 6 miles of the ride. I finished at 1:28 PM.
Weather: Start 86 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 76.5, a few clouds, wind E 10 mph; Finish 88 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 76.6, partly cloudy, wind E 12 mph gusts 17 mph.
