About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Early Enough To Avoid Hot Part Of The Day

Texbiker.net Posted on June 17, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 17, 2022

Summer weather moderated a little this morning as I started the bike ride at 8:39 AM. It felt a little cooler and I got about a 1/10″ of rain yesterday evening which I hoped helped my yard plants. I decided to not try to ride a fourth 40+ day and chose my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I estimated the ride would be 34 or 35 miles but i added a circle in Elm Grove Village early in the ride and ended up at 37.35 miles. I rode this route 6 times in 2022 so far. I didn’t realize this route distance was not out of the ordinary. It has been over a month since I last biked this route. I thought it was not that long ago. There were some changes in Tavola on Aragoste Parkway as workers added some streets to the east for more homes. On the west side of US59 south of Roman Forest Blvd. earth moving equipment was clearing land after a long time of no activity.

With today’s miles the week totals 165.38 which puts a 200+ mile in reach with 2 more riding days left. I need 233.5 miles to reach my 800 mile goal for June.

I decided to wear a new jersey today after breaking in 2 pairs of new gloves on previous bike rides this week. I retired a jersey to keep my clothes inventory in check.

Not sure what the dog status was at Rock Creek and Northpark I avoided there. Maybe another ride I will go there when I am riding north on the opposite side of the street where the dogs hang out.

Starting at 8:39 and finishing at 11:41 allowed me to avoid the hottest part of the day. Weather conditions: start 83 (humidity 82%, dew point 77), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 88 (humidity 58%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph. Wind was not much of an issue today.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the total moving time was 2:46:30 and I spent 1:56:49 pedaling the 35×13 gears. That was 27.7 miles in those gears with 25 RD shifts spread over the ride.

Arrest made in fatal Nacogdoches hit-and-run

By Christian Terry | www.kltv.com

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – An arrest has been made in a fatal hit-and-run which occurred in Nacogdoches back on June 7.

William Rivis 32, from Nacogdoches turned himself in at the Nacogdoches Law Enforcement Center Thursday morning on a warrant obtained by police on the charge of Accident Involving Personal Injury or Death, a Felony 2 charge. A felony 2 charge carries punishment ranges of 2 to 20 years.

The hit-and-run on June 7 happened in the 3300 block of Old Tyler Road around 6:30 p.m. A passing motorist had alerted authorities that an adult male was laying next to the roadway. Upon arrival, officers said they found the man dead from injuries sustained during what they believe was a hit-and-run. The man appeared to have been riding a bicycle before he was hit.

Bowie BMX hosted its biggest event of the year

The Bowie BMX Bike Park capped off its four-day racing event by hosting a state qualifier on Sunday that attracted 270 riders.

The Bowie BMX Bike Park hosted its biggest races of the year last weekend over a four-day period. It included the Bob Warnicke Scholarship race, a race for life fundraiser for leukemia that raised $1,080 before culminating with state qualifier races. The final day was during a scorcher of a Texas summer day. Still, the state qualifiers ultimately had 270 racers along with 61 motos compete. Before and during the race, the community showed respect to a recently fallen rider Kyle Hammock with a last ride along with helmet stickers. It also was the one year anniversary for the park, which …

3 Forty Mile Days In A Row, Unexpected Road Work

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2022

Today I started the bike ride at 8:36 AM beating yesterday’s start time by 25 minutes and I finished at 11:43 AM an hour and 12 minutes earlier than yesterday. I chose my “Huffman – Liberty County Line” route to bike at least 40 miles still trying to make up for not riding on Monday. Today’s bike ride ended with 40.82 miles about average for the 5 times I rode the route this year. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia today. I looked in SportTracks to find the last time I biked 40+ miles 3 days in a row. That was May 5th, 6th, and 7th 2020. Those were on different routes than the current three day run. My now totals 128.02 miles leaving 72 miles and 3 biking days to get to 200+ miles. Missing the one day makes it hard to get to 200 miles in a week.

Since my last bike ride on this route road construction narrowed FM 2100 from Huffman – Eastgate Road to Smith Road. I need to remember that before riding it again. Traffic was forgiving and a middle turn lane was there for part of the distance giving traffic space to pass me. No change in the construction on FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores Drive.

I wasn’t the only cyclist on the route today. I saw three others along FM 1960.

Starting early helped me avoid the hottest time of the day. The wind was light but a few places a headwind appeared ramping up my effort. Weather conditions: start 82 (humidity 87%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 91 (humidity 56%, dew point 73), partly cloudy, wind NW 4 mph.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report puts the moving time at 3:04:05 with a total time of 3:06:41. I stopped for a few minutes at the Exxon station on FM 1960 at E. Lake Houston Parkway. 23 RD shifts with the most time spent in the 35×13 gears for 2:04:40 or 29.1 miles.
