About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Family and friends gathered to help make sure their loved one, a bicyclist who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Memorial Day in Houston’s Greater East End, is not forgotten.

Nearly two weeks later, they returned to the place where Sajid Barajas was killed.

FIEL, or Familias Immigrantes Estudiantes en la lucha, joined Barajas’ family to honor him.

According to Houston police, the 47-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the 300 block of South Cesar Chavez Boulevard near Rusk at about 2:15 a.m. on May 30, when the driver of a white …

Last, long stretch of Brays Bayou trail breaks ground in west Houston

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Brays Bayou snakes below the Sam Houston Tollway and Beltway 8, just south of Bellaire Boulevard, mostly out of sight of the drivers above.

By the end of 2023, so will runners, dog walkers and bicyclists, part of one of the most significant trail connections in Houston’s Bayou Greenways plan, winding through many communities clamoring for better parks and car-free travel options.

Officials on Thursday announced the start of construction on a 7.7-mile segment of trail along the bayou, from Braeburn Glen Park near Gessner and Interstate 69 to Archbishop Fiorenza Park at the Westpark Tollway and Eldridge Parkway. The $20.5 million project completes trail work along Brays and is the longest segment in the Bayou Greenways plan.

To celebrate, officials gathered at Art Storey Park, between the two end points …

Forgot CamelBak , Dog Returned, A Hot Day Coming

Texbiker.net Posted on June 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 10, 2022

I managed to start today’s bike ride at 9:31 AM after watching the Women’s Tour (2.WWT) and Critérium du Dauphiné (2.UWT) on GCN+. They were in a hurry and finished a little earlier than expected. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Valley Ranch” route riding north through Porter and New Caney then making the u-turn at Roman Forest Blvd. In my haste to get started I left my CamelBak at home and circled back to get. With the hot weather it is not a day to ride without water. Fortunately I realized I left it before getting too far from home.

So far I biked this route 4 times this year. With the extra distance to get the CamelBak this ride was 33.82 miles, not the longest of the 4 but next to it. The miles today put my week total at 189.51 miles, within 1 ride of a 200+ week. June totals 349.53 miles, 44% of the way to my 800 mile goal.

6-10-2022 YTD Bike Rides Overview Today’s Route

The route went through the Rock Creek and Northpark Drive intersection. I’ve been avoiding it because of the dogs but the City of Houston Animal Control officer said they could find the dogs so I decided to see if they were still there. The brown and white dog was there and I stopped to call the officer. She said she would ask another officer to go by and check. Not sure where the dogs go.

Weather conditions: start 85 (humidity 75%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph; finish 92 (humidity 59%, dew point 76), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. The wind wasn’t too bad. With the heat thankfully the humidity was decent.

The Lynskey Helix crankset has been replaced and I will pick it up this afternoon. I plan on riding it on tomorrow’s bike ride.

Car blocking a bike lane? You might be able to report it and make some money soon.

by Samuel Stark | www.austinmonitor.com

In an effort to help city employees cite vehicles for illegally blocking bike lanes, the Urban Transportation Commission unanimously approved a “bike lane bounty” program at its meeting Tuesday night.

The program, inspired by one in New York City, would allow Austinites to use the 311 mobile application to report photo evidence of cars obstructing bike lanes. The person reporting the infraction would then receive 25 percent of the revenue collected by the city for the citation.

“The city spends millions of dollars to make these facilities, and these facilities get blocked all of the time,” said Mario Champion, Urban Transportation Commission chair and author of the proposal. “A successful transportation system doesn’t just move cars, it moves people.”

Champion said the proposal isn’t too dissimilar from …

Check FM 1960 Construction Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 9, 2022

After yesterday’s hard bike ride in Galveston I decided to make today’s ride a shorter one. But first I watched two bike races on GCN+ while eating breakfast. This delayed my start a little to 10:10 AM. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike which will get the crankset changed out later today to a 46×33, not exactly the one I wanted but closer than the 43×30 it has now. I am tempted to give the Lynskey Helix the nickname “Almost Bike.” Almost got the wheels I ordered and almost got the crankset I ordered.

The route for the shorter bike ride was my “Atascocita – Walden” route which is the same s the “Atascocita – Walden -Huffman” route without going east over Lake Houston. What I wanted to see was what the lane changes at FM 1960 and Atascocita shores Drive looked like. I mentioned on Tuesday the sign was not flashing the lane change message but when I arrived at FM 1960 on Pinehurst Trail Drive I could see the lanes were changed. The video shows both of those locations.

In the video I guess what the distance would be and missed by several miles. Adding some extra streets the ride went 29.15 miles, not that much less than the usual 33+ when I ride over Lake Houston to Huffman. I checked SportTracks to see the last time I rode this route and found it was September 24th, 2020. That ride was about 3 miles shorter.

With the 43×30 crankset on the Lynskey Helix the gear combinations change from the Cervelo ones. I used the large ring on the FD to get close to the Cervelo’s. The various gears I used can be seen at AXS.SRAM.com ride report. I rode almost the same time in each of the FD chain rings, 1:09:20 on the 30 and 1:09:17 on the 43. 2 FD shifts and 27 RD shifts.

My week’s mileage is now 155.69 leaving 45 miles to reach a 200+ mile week. June totals 315.71 miles towards my 800 mile goal.
