About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Carry the Load Relay team visits Fort Hood

By Blair Dupre, Fort Hood Public Affairs | www.army.mil

FORT HOOD, Texas – The West Coast Carry the Load Relay team made a pit stop here at the Great Place, May 26, on their 4,400-mile ride from Seattle, Washington to Dallas.

Carry the Load was founded in 2011 with the purpose of honoring service members and first responders who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice. This year five relay teams traveled a combined 20,000 miles across 48 states, ultimately meeting up in Dallas on Memorial Day for the Dallas Memorial March.

“In the military community, you’ve heard the saying before that, ‘most people …

Houston rolls out a surprising ranking on list of bike-friendly cities in the U.S.

By Teresa Gubbins | houston.culturemap.com

Houston is a bona-fide car town, but how does it rank for biking? A new survey on bikeability gives Houston a fairly decent — and somewhat surprising — ranking for that cycling life. In a list of the top 50 cities in the U.S., Houston ranks No. 29 and boasts a bikeability score of 49.

Drilling down, that means the Bayou City has 0.3 percent of workers who commute by bicycle, a little below the average city’s 0.5 percent, with 0.4 bike shops per 100,000 people and 0.3 percent bike trails per 100,000 people. …

Texas Parks and Wildlife awards $4.8 million in recreational trail grants to Texas communities

smcorridornews.com

AUSTIN — During Thursday’s meeting, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved more than $4.8 million in grants funding 17 motorized and non-motorized recreational trail-related projects across the state.

One million dollars of the amount allocated today came directly from state Sporting Good Sales Tax funds dedicated to the Recreational Trails Program through a rider passed by the 82nd Legislature. The rider increased the total amount of funded projects this year.

The National Recreational Trails Fund (NRTF) supports recreational trail construction, renovation, and acquisition. The grants are funded from a portion of the federal gas tax generated by gasoline purchases for off-highway vehicles.

Thirty percent of the total NRTF grants must be earmarked for motorized recreational trails, while another 30 percent must be spent on non-motorized trail projects. The remaining 40 percent is discretionary.

Several projects funded in …

A Basic, No Frills Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 2, 2022

A basic bike ride today with no racing distraction to delay the start. The Cervelo Caledonia and I rolled away at 9:23 AM to ride the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I hoped to ride far enough to get the week’s total to 150 miles and I did biking 33.60 miles by the time I finished at 11:54 AM. Earlier in the year most of my rides didn’t start before 11:54 AM.

Checking SportTracks this route is probably the one I bike the most often, 11 times so far in 2022.

6-2-2022 YTD Bike Rides Atascocita-Walden-Huffman

The wind behaved by getting no stronger than 10 mph and the temperature was less than 90 when I finished. Weather conditions: start 79 (humidity 89%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind NW 8 mph; finish 87 (humidity 67%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind NW 10 mph. I may start using my Camelbak with the temperature getting close to 90 or above.

The AXS.SRAM.com ride report highlights: total moving time 2:26:31, 25 RD shifts, 35×13 riding time 1:25:17 (21.1 miles), 35×15 riding time 40:16 (8.5 miles). The light wind allowed me to use the 35×13 gears more.

San Antonio cruises to the middle on ranking of bike-friendly cities

By Teresa Gubbins | sanantonio.culturemap.com

A new survey on bikeability ranks San Antonio No. 30 in a list of the top 50 cities in the U.S.

San Antonio has a bikeability score of 45. It has 0.2 percent of workers who commute by bicycle compared to the average city’s 0.5 percent, with 0.7 bike shops per 100,000 people and 0.8 percent bike trails per 100,000 people.

The study was released by Clever, a real estate data company, and analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. National Centers for Environmental Information, Walk Score, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Vision Zero Network, Google Trends, and Yelp.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the West is best when it comes to bike-friendly cities — one-third of the …

ohn "Jack" Burton Kendrick died in the home he loved in Fredericksburg, Texas, May 28, 2022. He was born in Denton, Texas on June 22, 1942, to Murray and Lura Kendrick. "Jack," as everyone called him, had a happy childhood growing up in Denton with his sister Karen, surrounded by the creative energy that comes from being raised by parents who were immersed in an artistic community.

He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1965, and then moved to New York City where he was a copywriter for the Ted Bates advertising agency. He was a New York ad-man during the heyday of the original "Madmen" era. His most remembered advertising creation from this time was the slogan "How Do You Spell Relief? R-O-L-A-I-D-S." …

… Jack loved the outdoors, and was an avid hiker and backpacker, but he loved being on his bicycle most of all. At one point he was often putting in over a hundred miles a week on his custom-made steel road bike. He was proud to have an unbroken 37-year record of participating in the annual "Hotter than Hell 100" August ride in Wichita Falls, Texas. A lifelong copywriter, he loved any and all word games and puzzles, especially his beloved New York Times crossword.

No Rain But Muddy Frontage Road, GoPro Mistakes

Texbiker.net Posted on June 1, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJune 1, 2022

No bike races on GCN+ this morning to delay starting my bike ride. I gathered all my bicycling gear, filled the water bottle, woke up the Bolt computer, applied sunscreen, and rolled the Cervelo Caledonia outside. A quick trip to the street to pickup the recycling bin after the trash men emptied it and I was off at 9:34 AM. I noticed the street had a few damp spots and then I felt a few sprinkles. I hoped this wasn’t a sign I would be riding in the rain.

I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route riding north and returning to Kingwood. Usually this route is 35 or 36 miles but today I added a few streets and the bike ride was 39.41 miles. This was the 4th time biking this route in 2022. The rides have been evenly divided on my 2 bikes. My goal for June is 800 miles and this is a good start. So far this week I biked 116.57 miles. A 200+ mile week is possible.

6-1-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood
6-1-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood

From the sprinkles at the beginning I grew more concerned when I reached the US59 northbound frontage road at E. Knox St. The road was wet and muddy but not raining. Also a street sweeper rolled by several minutes before my arrival stirring up the dirt into a nasty mud mess. I was determined to keep riding and prepared to wash the Cervelo when I finished the ride. When I stopped at the cemetery to visit my wife’s grave I saw how mud shows up on a black bike. I thought I rode muddy back roads. The wet frontage road was back to dry by the time I reached FM 1314. From then on no more wet streets but a gray cloud moved around some. I finished the ride at 12:44 PM and washed the Cervelo as expected.

While heading west on E. Knox Street at the feed store a large male peacock was strutting through the parking lot making loud sounds. I turned back to record him but I missed it due to the GoPro on/off mistake.

For some reason I got messed up recording video on the GoPro. I thought I turned it off when actually turning it on. Normally I record 10 to 15 minutes of the ride but today I recorded about 45 minutes, killing the GoPro’s battery before the end of the ride. It gave out in Valley Ranch, I think. I missed recording the rare cyclist on Loop 494 at TX 99.

Other than the sprinkles and muddy wet road the weather was typical. Humidity was higher than the temperature at the start making it seem warmer than it was. Weather at the start and finish: start 81 (humidity 87%, dew point 77), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; finish 89 (humidity 64%, dew point 75), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph gusts 18 mph. I thought the wind would stay below 10 mph but on the way back to Kingwood it felt stronger which must’ve been the 18 mph gusts.

AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the overall moving time was 2:54:07 and a total elapsed time of 3:10:03. I stopped at the Exxon station in Porter on the way back to refill my water bottle with ice and water accounting for some of the time difference. 47 RD shifts is higher than normal. I rode 1:39:40 (25.2 miles) in the 35×13 gears and 52:57 (10.2 miles) using the 35×15 gears. The rest of the time was in the other gears. Average power was 86 watts and the max was 413 watts.
