About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Exploring Bike Route Alternative: Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on March 3, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2022

With road construction hampering biking east over Lake Houston I set out today to explore a new route to the south and west of Lake Houston. Looking at google Maps I found Timber Forest Drive extending almost all the way to Beltway 8. Several new housing developments built along this street and I thought it might be new territory to ride. I set out at 11:35 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia not sure how many miles the ride would cover. By the 2:13 PM finish I biked 33.29 miles. My total for the week stands at 140 miles and 102.34 miles for the month. Good start. I will call this new route “Atascocita – Balmoral – Walden”.

Once I got on the new section of Timber Forest the number of houses amazed me since I had not been there on a bike or driving. The roads were nice and traffic was very light. I circled the new area in blue on the RWGPS map below. One street I thought might be busy was Woodland Hills Drive as I biked north but only 2 or 3 cars passed me between Greens Road and Madera Run Parkway. Madera Run Parkway look new and portions switched from 4 lane separated to 2 lanes joined. Again traffic was light. The road I should’ve avoided was W. Lake Houston Parkway from Madera Run Parkway to Aerobic Drive. Traffic was very heavy but forgiving, passing me with plenty of room. Next time I turn left on Madera Run onto Timber Forest, right on Eagle Springs, right on Will Clayton, and left on Aerobic to enter Walden. This voids that section of W. Lake Houston Parkway. As I mentioned in the video, Timber Forest Drive will go over the railroad tracks when the road construction finishes providing a way to ride south of Lake Houston through Summerwood, Deussen Park, and back roads to Crosby. I think that ride will be 50+ miles. I’ve done it the opposite direction riding the Humble Lions Bike Ride but not on the new streets I biked today. The video clips show the new roads on the bike ride.

The Cervelo rode smoothly and the shifting is crisp. I’m hooked on eTap shifting. I didn’t shift a lot because the route was mostly flat.

Chilly weather gave way today to 70 to 74 degrees during the ride. Humidity and dew point moved up but not to summer levels. Wind was light and didn’t pose a problem. I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey and jacket. I could’ve wore a light long sleeve jersey and been comfortable. The next 3 days will probably be warmer but Monday will cool down some.

My Tickr Fit heart rate monitor worked nicely with my home made retention sleeve. I took an old sock, cut the toe off and slide it on my arm with heel bend on my elbow. The elastic of the sock held the Tickr in place and the skin on my wasn’t irritated. I order a short arm sleeve for a permanent solution.

On the map below the blue arrow points to the railroad overpass under construction on timber forest Drive. You can see it in the video.

Texas BBQ Tour Overnighter

Maxwell Johnston | bikepacking.com

Located less than an hour outside of Austin, Texas, you’ll find an area known for Texas gravel and Texas Barbeque. Lockhart is easily accessible from Austin, San Antonio, and Houston and has become a popular location for gravel enthusiasts. The Texas BBQ Tour Overnighter provides the full Lockhart experience while introducing you to one of Texas’ more unique state parks…

It’s no surprise that Texas has very limited public land for grand adventures compared to much of the American West. However, there are plenty of beautiful state parks that can be strung together with country roads to create a perfect weekend microadventure.

The Texas BBQ Tour Overnighter begins in Lockhart State Park, a small park in the quaint town of Lockhart. Lockhart is known as the β€œBBQ Capital of Texas” and is home to multiple family-operated BBQ joints that are all worth trying. Great food isn’t the only thing this area of Texas has to offer though. Some of the best gravel and chip seal roads in the region await just minutes outside …

Kerrville to Lost Maples State Natural Area 54 miles. 2631 ft of gain: Cold then warm.

Sunday February 27, 2022, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 172 miles (277 km) Another good night of sleep and I got rolling about 830. I couldn’t find much open on a Sunday morning so I stopped at McDonald’s for some breakfast and hot coffee. It was nice to sit indoors and let my hands and feet melt. It was about 33Β° when I took off from camp. There were a lot of up and downs on my ride. Definitely in Texas Hill country. I stopped in a very small town called Hunt Texas. There was very little in the store but I got a Coke and some Chex mix. I was camping at a state park with no stores so I knew I was going to have to make dinner in camp. The campground was …

Lost Maples State Park to Brackettville Texas 91 miles 3818 of gain: Another cold morning with some serious hills.

Monday February 28, 2022, 91 miles (146 km) – Total so far: 263 miles (423 km) I knew I had a big day to get to my destinations so I got up early to get rolling. It was a cold night but I slept pretty good and stayed in my tent for about 12 hours. At 6 o’clock I finally forced myself up and realized there was frost on the tent. Burr! I got packed up and cleaned up right before sunrise. I put disposable warmers in my socks and that helped a bit. I couldn’t feel my fingers and some of my toes. luckily there is a 11% grade hill to start my day which help me warm up. There were a lot of ups and downs with a few 11% grades. By the time I got to the town of Leakey for breakfast I was sweating. I had a large …

Modified Southern Tier Winter 2022

By Dean Mitchell | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Smithville, TX

Monday February 28, 2022, 95 km (59 miles) – Total so far: 2,085 km (1,296 miles) I started in the SW part of Austin. I went clear across the city entirely on one road (William Cannon Dr), which was fairly flat and not too bad traffic. I was chased a couple of times by dogs in some rough areas outside of town. Squirt them with water, stops them immediately.

Once out of the city it was mostly flat until near the end at Bastrop. I headed into the Bastrop State Park and went through it to Buescher State Park on Park road 1C. It was 18 km of curvy road with some very steep hills. I would say the grade of a couple were 30% – 40%. This a ACA Southern Tier route section, little traffic, very quiet, and viciously brutal. The last part agravated my groin and shin muscle. All those days of hills caught up. Tomorrow I plan a short day to La Grange. In the tent tonight.

Sunny, light wind, 18c

La Grange, TX

Tuesday March 1, 2022, 45 km (28 miles) – Total so far: 2,130 km (1,324 miles) I left the state park at noon, I’m doing a short day to let my right leg recover. The ride was quiet with lots of flat and some rolling hills too. I did not push hard so to hopefully not inflame my leg muscles too much. The past few weeks of Texas hills and headwinds put a slow beating on your body.

La Grange appears to be a nice town and I finally got to have some Texas BBQ, very tasty. The owners gave me a pulled pork sandwich with slaw for the road. They don’t get many Nova Scotians in their shop. I must say that the people I have met in Texas have been very friendly. The drivers too almost always slow down and give me plenty of room.

Sunny, light winds, 23c

Electronic Shifting Spoiled Me. Biking Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on March 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumMarch 2, 2022

First time to ride the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route this year which surprises me a little after 2 months. The ride started at 11:23 AM and finished at 2:11 PM. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. This bike has Ultegra 8000 mechanical shifting and it took a few shifts to get the muscle memory going. The Cervelo’s electronic shifting spoiled me. The initial 3 miles was not my usual start on this route because I ran an errand. No SRAM AXS gear data since I rode my Lynskey bike. Today’s 35.69 miles advanced the March toal miles to 69, 11% of the way to the 650 mile goal.

A few degrees warmer today so I left the leg warmers at home. It took about 15 minutes for them to warm up and I felt comfortable from then on unless I rode in an extended amount of shade. The wind had a chill but my 1 day old Bellwether wind breaker jacket did good. I wore a long sleeve jersey and short sleeve jersey underneath. I could’ve left the short sleeve jersey at home too and still be warm. Bare legs absorbed sun for vitamin D production deprived during the winter rides with leg warmers.

The wind moved around from the start to the south at 9 mph by the finish of the ride. My legs felt good and I didn’t have a problem with the headwind most of the ride. 67 degrees at the start warming to 72 when I got back home.

I looked at alternative routes to ride south around Lake Houston and circle back home riding west on FM 1960 but the UPRR railroad tracks get in the way of streets going south except for W. Lake Houston Parkway. Riding on W L H P is possible but the traffic is heavy. Instead of riding east over Lake Houston 2 or 3 times a week I may limit it to one time until the construction area improves on the west end of the causeway.

This route is flat except for a few inclines, the biggest going up at Community Drive to the TX 99 Grand Parkway intersection. I usually stand up pedaling to get to the top.

SOPHIE STOLEN! Beloved Bicycle Boosted by Brazen Burglar! (+ How You Can Help!)

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

The evening of Saturday, January 8, 2022, I was inside a big box store talking to a clerk about replacing my over four-year-old cell phone. I had parked Sophie, the Fairdale Weekender Archer, a bicycle who has been my trusty sidekick since I won her in a Bike Austin raffle in 2017, a mere 10 feet away in the small vestibule for shopping carts. Since I was so close and regularly looking right at her, I did not use my u-lock and cable lock β€” a fatal mistake I’ll never make again. At 6:30 pm, a brazen thief walked into the little lobby, stood there for 20 seconds, then walked out with my bicycle while I wasn’t looking. The next time I looked up, Sophie was gone, and …
