About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A tricked-out trike is hauling bikes and turning heads in downtown Houston as BCycle aims for fossil fuel-free fun

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Ian Freeman, e-trike operator, moves a load of bikes Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 in Houston. BCycle, the city’s bike share program, uses the e-trike, a three wheel pedal-assisted cycle, along with a trailer to move bikes between stations.

Ian Freeman may not have the weight of an automobile behind him, but on this rainy, cold Thursday he has 15 wheels and red, blinking lights.

Sure, only two of the wheels have any power whatsoever, 10 of them are not even touching the pavement and he is unlikely to reach 20 mph as he ferries four Houston BCycle bikes and an e-bike on an e-trike.

Yes, an e-trike. A pedal-assisted three-wheeled cycle originally designed as a modern-day rickshaw for carrying folks to and from special events. Houston …

Driver who killed Houston cyclist could be first charged under Texas’ new Lisa Torry Smith Act, advocates say

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Prosecutors will wait weeks to present the case to a Harris County grand jury as the investigation continues.

A man behind the wheel of a Toyota Tundra who hit and killed a 73-year-old cyclist Monday morning in southwest Houston could face a felony charge under a new crosswalk law believed to have never been applied before, advocates said.

The dead cyclist was identified as Chung Ko, a Sharpstown resident who was 10 minutes from his home when he was hit. Houston police have not publicly identified the pickup driver. Ko was pedaling north across Bellaire Boulevard at Osage Street around 10:15 a.m. Monday. Houston police said Ko was "possibly" in the crosswalk when the driver, who was facing north on …

May I Interrupt February Chill With Warm Weather For A Bike Ride?

Texbiker.net Posted on February 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 10, 2022

Slightly warmer weather for today’s bike heading north to FM 1485 and back. I started at 11:40 AM and finished at 2:23 PM. Second ride on the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS. I moved the cadence sensor on the left crankarm and no problem today. Good to be back on the road riding 32.31 miles and making progress towards my 300 mile goal for February. Todays route was “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood”.

I saw another cyclist in Elm Grove Village on Rustling Elms. I don’t see many cyclist there.

Weather: 69 (humidity 36%, dew point 41), partly cloudy, wind W 2 mph; finish 71 (humidity 29%, dew point 37), partly cloudy, wind variable 6 mph. I left the leg warmers at home but kept the thermal long sleeve jersey and wind breaker jacket. I probably could’ve used a regular long sleeve jersey and the jacket.

Lisa Graiff, a project manager for the Houston Parks Board, the nonprofit group overseeing plans for the Vince Bayou Greenway Trail, said design work on the effort is expected to be completed by the end of May.

The path would begin at Memorial Park, 500 W. Jackson, on the city’s north side and follow that waterway south to Strawberry Park, 1104 Parkside. The …

Riding My New Cervelo Caledonia On Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on February 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 9, 2022

I’ve been waiting for today’s bike ride since I picked it up on Monday. The weather warmed up above 60, the sky was blue and my new bike was ready to ride. I rolled out at 11:23 AM on my new Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS eTap bike. This was my first ride on it. Because I’m not familiar with electronic shifting I decided to ride Kingwood streets. Also my eyesight is still adjusting from cataract surgery. I needed to get creative on eyewear since my prescription sunglasses weren’t usable. My solution was to use the sunglasses that fit over my regular glasses. The optical store removed the right lens from my glasses because my sight changed so much. I didn’t know if the sunglasses that slide over my regular glasses would stay put but the snap on held them snugly.

As I was getting ready to walk the Cervelo outside I spun the front wheel to activate the speed sensor and nothing happened. I checked the battery and it was dead. A new battery fixed that problem.

2022 Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS eTap
2022 Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS eTap

With the first ride I didn’t know if I setup everything properly. The only problem that came up was the placement of my cadence sensor on the left crank arm. The strap on my left shoe hit the sensor when I didn’t keep my heel out. After the ride I moved the sensor closer to the pedal so that problem should be fixed. Everything else seems to be good. A longer ride may bring up something.

Learning the SRAM AXS eTap shifting doesn’t appear to be hard but it does require a light touch. If I push the lever too long it shifts more than one gear. The shape of the brake levers is very different from the Shimano Ultegra 8000 levers I have been using on my other bikes. But that will become the norm as I use them. A nice feature is pairing the rear derailleur with the Wahoo Bolt computer. Now on the screen it shows which gear both front and rear it is on. At first I didn’t see the front derailleur but it is the upper right corner.

Ride comfort on the Cervelo feels very much like the Canyon Endurace. The handle bar shape is round and not aero like the Canyon. I liked the aero shape because there was more area to put my hands. This is the first black bike I’ve owned since the Cannondale Black Lightning. I think was back in the 1990’s. The taillight mounting position is lower on the Cervelo getting it below the seat bag for better sight by approaching traffic. The weather is supposed to be a couple of degrees warmer with sun. I plan a longer ride then.

I sold my Canyon Endurace today after listing it on Craigslist Monday evening. I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested. Several inquires and one buyer. The buyer was excited with his new bike.
