About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sponsors, riders solicited for 1oth Ark-La-Tex Challenge

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texarkana Resources for the Disabled, Inc. will hold its 10th annual Ark-La-Tex Challenge on April 2.

Texarkana Resources partnered with Berridge Bikes for the cycling event 10 years ago, as there was no cycling event that existed in Texarkana at the time. The event is still going.

The challenge includes a 60-mile ride starting in Texarkana, Texas and going through three different states. Finishers of the challenge will receive a medal.

"The draw of the bike ride is that you get to ride through three states with one ride, which is unique to our geographical location," CEO Jennifer Lewis said. "The ride launches and finishes in Texas at …

By Mark Smith | www.crosstimbersgazette.com

The town of Flower Mound will hold a public review meeting this week regarding its draft of the Flower Mound Trails & Bikeways Master Plan.

The Trails and Bikeways Master Plan will serve as a roadmap for the future improvement and expansion to trails and bikeways within Flower Mound, according to the town. Headed to White Rock Lake? Check out the new mapping system that uses QR codes

By Rebekah Morr | www.keranews.org

The Dallas Parks and Recreation department is launching a new pilot program to help visitors find their way around the trails that surround White Rock Lake.

The new "Find Yourself at White Rock Lake" program uses a series of QR codes along the trails to help identify landmarks along the way and pinpoint where visitors are on the trail.

Maria Hasbany, the Park Board representative for District 9 which includes White Rock Lake Park, helped come up with the idea.

“A lot of times I went out there and didn’t know what things were,” she said. “Then I had …

Inaugural Zwift TexbikerClub Event – Makuri Islands Twilight Harbor

Texbiker.net Posted on January 31, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 31, 2022

This morning while eating breakfast I watched a YouTube video from GPLama on how to create a Zwift club, select various options and create an event. The club name is TexbikerClub. I created the first event which started at 11:30 AM today about an hour in advance. Zwift does not promote club events so I posted the share link on Instagram.com and Twitter. I didn’t expect anyone to join the event and that was the case. Feature club events have over a meetup: the event starts in the pen for the route you select, the event can be distance, time, or laps. I chose 4 laps plus the lead-in for the Makuri Islands Twilight Harbor route, a total of 17.2 miles with 447 feet of climbing. My actual distance came in at 17.29 miles and 446 feet of climbing. Pretty close; I probably continued pedaling after the ride end. The progress bar showed the lead-in and 4 laps, counting as each lap passed. Unlike a meetup if no one joins the event you are alone on the ride with the event leader icon above. If no one joins an event I prefer the meetup format.

I passed on stage 7 of the Tour de Zwift to ride the club event. I can ride it tomorrow.

This was my first ride on the Twilight Harbor route and I collected the badge after the first lap. ZwiftInsider.com describes the route, “This simple route begins near the Harbor and proceeds in a clockwise direction along the canal to the Tower Sprint. Then we turn right, riding under the overpass and past the neon trucks, making our way down to the Alley Sprint Reverse before finishing off our lap at the same virtual banner where we began.” It was strange to ride a sprint section and my name was the only one. I think another route used part of the sprint sections because 4 names popped up but disappeared when I got close to the line.

I think I rode a good pace for being by myself: average speed 17.6 mph, max speed 23.5 mph, average power 117 watts.

Since it was the first time on this route I earned 4 top results medals.

This was the last ride of January. I missed my road mile goal of 300 miles riding 259.5 miles. I exceeded the miles I thought I would ride in Zwift due to weather with 332.3 miles, 42% of my 800 mile goal for the whole year. The month totaled 591.76 miles, not as much as last year’s 649.06 miles. This month I rode 8 times on the road and 23 times on Zwift. In January 2021 I rode 30 days: 20 Zwift rides and 10 outside. I hoped to ride today (the 31st) but rain was approaching. February will be a different month. I have 2 cataract surgeries that will limit my biking days. My goal is 300 road miles. With fewer days and the off the bike days reaching the goal may be tough. If the weather is good I plan on riding the Jalapeno 100K in Harlingen on February 26th. I like this ride because it tends to be much warmer there.

Short Weather Window To Bike Outside

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2022

After Zwifting each day since January 20th today the weather warmed up enough for me to ride outside. Wheels down at 2:00 PM as I rode on the Lynskey R300 bike. I debated about which route to ride and ended up on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman”. With the late start I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists and I didn’t. I am 75 miles short of my 300 road mile goal for January but today’s 34.17 miles got me closer. While the weather today was good tomorrow rain will probably keep me inside Zwifting. That means I fall short of the goal. I have rode 314 Zwift miles so far. While it is early 2022 this was the second ride on this route.

1-30-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
1-30-2022 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Today’s ride was faster and slightly longer.

Weather conditions: start 68 (humidity 34%, dew point 39), a few clouds, wind W 10 mph; finish 67 (humidity 33%, dew point 37), a few clouds, wind SW 8 mph. It’s good that I wore leg warmers because the wind was chilly in the shade and riding over Lake Houston. I also wore a long sleeve jersey (not thermal) and a windbreaker jacket. I was comfortable even riding into the headwind. The sunshine helped too.

I was surprised to see two top results in Strava because I ride this route frequently. Maybe the cool weather upped my energy.
