About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston Company Builds Bikes for Kids in Military Families

By Tom Cleary | heavy.com

A Houston company got into the Christmas spirit, putting together bicycles for military families at their offices on Saturday, December 18, 2021. Reynolds and Reynolds, an automotive dealership software and services provider, donated 100 bikes for military kids, according to a press release from the company.

“In the face of massive disruption to the global supply chain, Reynolds and Reynolds associates have found ways to keep their annual tradition, supplying the children of military families with bicycles for Christmas, alive,” the company said. “Delays in …

Zwift – Neokyo Makuri Islands SleeplessCity p/b TBR

Texbiker.net Posted on December 19, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 19, 2021

I wasn’t sure what events I would find in Zwift for the mid-afternoon time frame but The Big Ring (TBR) scheduled 60 minutes starting at 2:45 PM. The route was the Neokyo Makuri Islands Sleepless City which I had not done yet. According to ZwiftInsider.com the route is 6 miles with a .1 mile lead-in. Climbing was not too bad at 138 feet. With the event’s 60 minutes that meant multiple laps. I managed to stay with the group which was supposed to keep the speed at 19 to 21 mph for the first lap but they pulled away. My average speed was 19.7 mph, in the range the leaders wanted but not fast enough to stay with the other 170+ riders. The route is about as flat as you can get as shown in the image below.

Neokyo Makuri Islands Sleepless City Route
Neokyo Makuri Islands Sleepless City Route

Because this was a new route for me I set 3 personal records in Strava: PR on Sleepless City (15:58), 2nd fastest time on Sleepless City (17:59), 3rd fastest time on Sleepless City (19:14). That cover the 3 laps I rode for a total of 19.91 miles.

Outside the weather was cooler than my 60 degree threshold pointing me to Zwift where it was a nice 70. While I was inside Richard Swann took my Strava local legend title on the Havenbrook sprint. His 28 rides eclipsed my 27 in the last 90 days.

Texas driver who killed cyclist on cross-country trek is charged, claimed he’s ‘blind in one eye’

Jay R. Jordan | www.yourconroenews.com

Michael Weaver, 66, is charged with criminally negligent homicide, a state-jail felony.

Texas State Troopers filed charges Wednesday against the Liberty County driver who in October hit a group of six cyclists on a cross-country trip, killing one of them.

Michael Weaver, 66, is charged with criminally negligent homicide, according to Sgt. Erik Burse of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The six cyclists were pedaling along FM 787 near Rye, Texas, around 11 a.m. on Oct. 30 when Weaver steered his Ford Escape into the group. Kent Wosepka, a 51-year-old cycling enthusiast from Massachusetts, was air lifted to a Beaumont hospital, where he died the next day. Two others, including Wosepka’s fiancée, were also hospitalized in serious condition. None of the …

Austin’s full moon rides fall into two categories:

cycling.frenzied.us

The monthly full moon ride, which happens on the night closest to the full moon (whatever day of the week that falls on, though we do fudge things a bit to make for more weekend rides), assembling at 11:00pm and taking off between 11:30pm and 11:59pm (so don't arrive later than 11:30pm!), generally following a different route each month, and
The annual full moon ride, which happens on the Saturday night/Sunday morning closest to the full moon in September, meeting at 2:00am and leaving at about 2:15-2:30am, following approximately the same route each year.

Both rides meet at the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge (right here, or possibly under the "circle" if it’s raining), are unsupported and ‘ride at your own risk’. We try not to drop slow riders, but it can happen, so being prepared is wise — having lights, tools to change a flat, water, a cell phone, etc.

For more details about individual rides and to get reminders about upcoming rides, join the ATX (((MOON))) group on Facebook.

Pictures from past rides can be found here. (Remember, September rides are the annual ride, and the rest are the monthly rides.) …

I live in Texas and have thought over the years of purchasing a firearm. But I have found that a very bright 1,000 lumen torch that blinks with the light source to be about a little less than the size of your palm to be just as effective. https://t.co/LmTrhrL5BM@WeAreMel

Double Zwift Rides – Makuri Islands and Watopia

Texbiker.net Posted on December 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 18, 2021

An approaching cool front with rain meant today’s bike ride would inside on Zwift. I looked for upcoming events and selected the Neokyo Badge Run Stage 3. Stage 3 was a short route on the Railways and Rooftops covering 5.36 miles and 305 feet of climbing. The event started at 12:00 PM just as the front arrived blinking the electricity numerous times. I wondered if I would start or finish the ride. I think the electricity interruptions affected my Wahoo Kickr Snap because the power wasn’t reflecting the climbs. Or maybe my legs were stronger than I thought? With the short ride I added the Watopia Volcano Circuit route going 3.43 miles with an easy 89 feet of climbing. This wasn’t an event but a route I had not done before.

No many miles in Zwift but I closed the gap on my goal to 69 miles. Still a few days to reach it. My goal is 800 miles for the year.

ZwiftInsider.com description for Railways and Rooftops, “Introduced in Zwift’s November 2021 update, Railways and Rooftops is almost the pitchiest route in Neokyo, climbing 70 meters over its 6.2km length. Along the way it takes you over the Railway Sprint then up the backside of the Rooftop KOM which (strangely) is not currently a timed segment.”

Railways and Rooftops

And for Watopia Volcano Circuit, “Watopia’s “Volcano Circuit” route takes you around and through the volcanic island in a clockwise direction. To get to the circuit you must first ride ~2.6km from the spawn point, traveling through a glass bridge to arrive at the volcano. Once you arrive you will continue to be routed around the 4km circuit. A lap counter visible just after the circuit banner indicates the number of laps you have completed.”

Earlier this morning I learned I lost the local legend in Strava on the Huffman to Eastgate segment to Sherm Everett. Each of us rode the segment 1 time in the last 90 days. I need to try to get another ride during December.

The Strava ride summaries for both Zwift rides.
