About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

CYCLING FOR UNITY: 5th Annual Juneteenth Bicycle Rally to celebrate health, heritage and freedom

Arianna Morrison | starlocalmedia.com

The North Texas cycling community is gearing up for the 5th Annual Juneteenth Bicycle Rally, which has grown significantly since its inception five years ago thanks to Soul Patrol North Texas, and the organization’s president, Hillis Davis.

Originally from Atlanta, Davis moved to Frisco in 2009 due to job relocation and fell into the cycling community in 2014 after being advised by his doctor to incorporate more exercise into his daily routine. Choosing cycling as his means to stay active, Davis quickly fell in love with the sport, but noticed a lack of diversity within his local cycling clubs.

This is when he met James Guess, Mike Cooks, Maceo Hall, and Lee Calloway, who shared a similar background to Davis, and they …

Strong Morning Rain, Wrapped Some Bar Tape, Closed Out May Biking

Texbiker.net Posted on May 31, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 31, 2024

Strong rain arrived around 7 AM and lingered until about 11 AM. I waited a couple of hours for the streets to dry some and rolled out at 2:24 PM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. With the later start I rode the Kingwood – Brooklyn Trails route for 17.56 miles. Plenty of signs along the ride of the 1.86″ of rain (my home weather station). The previous bike rides on this route are varying distances and Strava matched two others.

While the streets dried I replaced the bar tape on the Cervelo Caledonia. I’m not proficient wrapping handlebars. It took several times before I was satisfied. I used Zipp Service Course CX Bar Tape black.

Closing out May bike rides I wanted to ride longer today but the 17.56 miles pushed May over October 2023 by 1 mile: 935.24 vs. 934.28. May also surpassed September’s 923.55 miles. Year to date I’ve rode 4013 miles. I was on a bike 27 days out of 31. Cervelo Caledonia 11 rides (400.07 miles), Canyon Endurace 10 rides (376.28 miles), Lynskey Helix 5 rides (144.41 miles), Trek Marlin 8 MTB 1 ride (14.45 miles). Average ride distance was 34.64 miles. Longest ride 51.5 miles and the shortest was 14.5 miles.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – The Texas 4000 Bikers Against Cancer is a non-profit group where bikers trek thousands of miles to spread awareness against cancer.

University of Texas at Austin students chose to embark on the Ozark Trail that runs through Southwest Louisiana because of its connections to Cancer Alley, an approximately 85-mile stretch of communities along the banks of the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where communities exist side by side with some 200 fossil fuel and petrochemical operations.

The bikers have been training for months. One rider, Tanisha Jasani, explains she has connections to the area.

Wind and Wheels: Outsmarting School Traffic and Claiming a Local Legend

Texbiker.net Posted on May 30, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 30, 2024

Last day of school for Humble ISD and I tried to avoid them after starting the bike ride at 11:08 AM. (Should’ve started earlier) Riding my Cervelo Caledonia on a modified Atascocita – Walden – Indian Shores Road route I mostly succeeded. When I got to Kingwood Park High School traffic was heavy but an officer motioned the cars through the intersection and I went with them. Later crossing Kingwood Drive another officer waved the east bound traffic continuously without allowing the cross traffic to move even when the lanes were stopped. I inched out and rode across during one of the traffic backups. I’m not sure what good the officer did only allowing east bound cars to move. They would’ve done that without him.

Once I passed that bottleneck no more school traffic problems. I thought my legs were getting tired because I couldn’t build up speed but the wind strengthened after the ride started coming from the SE at 14 mph with 18 mph gusts. I took advantage of the wind on the way back from Indian Shores Road increasing my speed and overall average speed. I claimed the Strava Local Legend on Bridge Drag Reverse (2:30).

Weather: Start 85 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 76.0, mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph; Finish 90 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 76.2, mostly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph gusts 18 mph. I used my CamelBak for hydration and a few ice cubes were left when I finished at 2:31 PM.

It was October 12th, 2023, the last time I rode this route. That ride was 40.23 miles and today I biked 39.40 miles. May is the most miles (917.68) in a month since last October’s 934.28. If the weather cooperates tomorrow I could beat October.
